Door check replacement

So my driver's door has the "popping" noise when opening, and googling around I see it is the "door check" assembly that tensions the door at its various detent positions. Seems the most common issue is the bolts coming loose, but mine are tight and I can see that it is indeed broken.

I see them online as cheap as $20 which I assume is not OEM. Then there are others for $60 or 80.

Of course I want a reliable part but don't want to spend four times more than necessary... has anyone used the cheap ones with success?

I bought a cheap one, and it is definitely not as nice as OEM. It fixed the noise of the broken one, but isn’t nearly as quiet as the other doors. I will buy OEM next time around.

Does anyone know of any specific instructions anywhere for taking off the 2nd gen driver's door trim panel? They are out there for 1st and 3rd gen easy to find; just want to make sure I don't miss or break anything.

 

I bought a OEM one from eBay through a toyota dealer. Cost about 60.00.

 

Yeah, looking at replacing both driver and passenger on mine. Damn, $120 is a lot of bones for the door. Probably going to get the generic or junkyard (if that's be even available)

 

I recently replaced my driver side door check with a $20 eBayer. It is working good. Developed a very slight sound 3 weeks after install. Nothing major though. IMO id go with the $20 part again vs OEM

I already ordered the factory one for 87 bucks... Hopefully no issues at least.

 

I replaced mine with the newer oem version 68620-0C023 on eBay for $55. It has a beefier collar design at the pin which I’m guessing solves this failure mode.

 

Anyone know the size of the nuts? Looks like I'm missing a few.

 

10mm... Not sure about the bolt size or threading though

 

I replace both of them on my '07, and I just noticed the passenger door check on my 2002 has started popping at 171k

I had the same problem on my 2014. I replaced with Dorman brand which was around $60. I wasn’t happy. Didn’t feel or sound the same, and wasn’t smooth at all. I was disappointed because this wasn’t even a cheap $20 one. I returned it and am currently waiting for OEM one in the mail this week. If you want OEM feel, go OEM.

Figured I'd report back in case anyone lost the nut there. Ended up buying M6-1.0 grade 8 nylon lock nut from Lowe's. They fit perfectly. U used a small washer to help spread the load. $1 total cost.

 

I'll update mine as well... got the truck back this morning and did the swap a couple hours ago.
Everything went well except removing the window switch housing. Watching the video above I was left with the impression that the front of that housing was on some sort of pivoting tab in notch or something, so I was trying to rotate it out lifting up the back first... wrong. the front and rear clips are the same, and so I broke off the front one. Ideally the entire thing should be lifted straight up.

The good news is that the plastic trim piece with the broken clip appears to be screwed to an inner housing that actually contains all the switches and wiring, so should be able to replace it super easy without having to mess around with the actual switches or wiring. Even with one clip it is pretty tight though, so if the piece is expensive I probably won't bother.

Popping is gone, so mission accomplished.

 

Dvcnick, did you buy OEM? If not, how do you like the generic?

 

I ended up buying OEM.
There isn't even any grease on it and it feels right to me... guess I should put some on there anyway.

 

Funny. I looked at my truck and no grease. I have a brand new VW and looked there... Yup, all 4 door checks have a trail of grease. I'm gonna go lube up the truck's door checks now.

 

The rest of mine have some grease... I assume original from 2011.

Read back a few posts. Some have said the popping issue was fixed with this part while others have said it didn’t fully fix it.

Mine completely snapped a little while back when I backed in into my electric box with my driver door opened. Hyperextended my door and crunched it up pretty good. I’ve finally had the chance to fix the body and bend the hinges back into place to re-align the door. Now I’m just looking to replace the door check without spending another hundred bucks.

 

My driver's door was making the popping sound over the last couple weeks. Was about to order a new door check, but thought I'd check and see if it was loose first. Lo and behold, both nuts were loose! Tightened them up and greased all 4. Smooth as butter now.
