How does it tow behind the tundra ?

I'd imagine quite well. I posted a pic of mine a few posts back which is pretty similar and sometimes I don't even notice it back there. A good weight distribution hitch does wonders for towing these RVs.

 

It tows it awesome. Just get a good weight distribution hitch. I have a equalizer 4 point anti sway hitch. It makes a world of difference. Towed it home last time in a wind storm. Trailer never swayed at all. As far as pulling power. I have a long decent grade coming home each time and it pulled the hill at 65mph at 3,500 rpm.

not necessarily, just a lot of Tundra owners tow trailers. It's how they like to "camp".

 

Once my wife experienced indoor plumbing RV camping, there was no going back for me. BUT if we lived somewhere cooler we would definitely have an RTT setup. We were in Colorado recently, saw so many Toyota’s with RTTs and we were jealous of the amazing, more secluded spots you can find to camp. She started looking into where we can go to boondock.

Primary sleeping is up top in the RTT, but the bed is big enough to hold a double inflatable mattress.

 

Lance 1685. Camp in it year round (down to -8F, so far). Considered a teardrop and RTT before landing on the Lance. Trust me, more than grateful for our interior space while watching the tenters and teardroppers prepare bfast outside in the rain or cold as we sip our morning coffee inside, in our jammies. Best part is, it only doubles the length of the Tundra, so you can get it into a lot of places and the Tundra just whips it around in traffic.

 

Anywhere that nobody's running a generator. Which usually means dispersed camping.

 

Right? LOL. It's cool seeing everyone's rigs but you can't get any of these fancy trailers into the places I like to camp. They're too delicate.

That said, The Woman and I are kicking around the idea of buying a 6x12 enclosed cargo trailer when funds allow. I'd insulate it, install a window, roof vent, lights, solar, propane heater and awning. Sleeping would be on a removeable mattress, seating and table would be of the folding variety same as we use now. Beef up the suspension, better tires and boom. Poor man's toy hauler. The cargo trailers are way more rugged than a travel trailer and we could get them into some pretty off grid places plus be able to put a side by side in if we decide to buy one eventually too.

Just gonna get us back to ‘camping’, since I’m a primadonna. Travel trailers are cool. I lived in one for a few years as a kid while my parents made their way across the gulf coast from Ft Lauderdale to San Diego.

But I guess since I lived in one, I don’t think of them as ‘camping’ even though I understand why some people do.

We prefer campsites that require 4lo to get to whenever possible. Keep the bed packed tighter than a gnat’s ass. Low and sleek to make it easier to get down those narrow “Jeeps only, stupid” trails.

And still have a nice hot shower at camp.




Yes, all that stuff is packed inside the truck. The awning actually fits inside the tent when it’s closed. The legs go on the bed slide with the table and chairs and everything else. The cab has wife, me, two large dogs, fridge and water storage.

 

I agree getting somewhere in 4 lo makes me happy.

Its great in campgrounds and out in remote areas. For reference, I use it in Daniel Boone National Forest. Can drive down a forest road, setup entire camp in 10 mins and pack up in less than 20. Tent is the least amount of time.

 

YES! This is camping to me.

No offense to the travel trailer group. They have their place and use and I think they’re awesome for getting families outdoors when it’s otherwise not possible. But we love getting out and feeling like we’re the only ones on earth.

This is from a trip we did of about 2,000 miles of dirt trails for 13 days (3k miles total and 15 days). On this particular section we covered 250 miles in 2 days and saw 1 other vehicle.

 

I agree, I prefer being away from other people vs indoor plumbing and dealing with obnoxious neighbors, or worrying that our whiskey fueled campfire singalongs are bugging anyone else.

Some of my fondest memories are backpacking with my dad. Up until kids my wife and I only did BLM and 4 wheel drive camping trips. Very rarely did we hit an established campgrounds. Lately we had stopped camping due to me not trusting my old truck and finding our Highlander too limiting for gear. Now with the Tundra we are back at it but...

I have a neighbor who insists on being on water, so that gets us to campgrounds, often on lakes that I am not keen to fish. So lately that's where we've been going. It has helped push me from the caravan. Although my vote rarely counts in our house so...

 

The boonies are the best!! Just need more time off from work .

 

Now you just need a water "Tundra" to go with that Bad A$$ 4 Wheel Camper. Another way to escape the campground Riff Raff.

First post might as well be a camping post

We just purchased this camper a couple of weeks ago, Tacoma did fine with it (6 speed manual).. but, the dealer made me an insane offer on it, and the Tundra. Couldn't pass it up. Now, I wish I'd bought a bigger camper
