I drilled and removed mine out. The new LED up in there is nice and bright and I enjoy the white light.

 

Cam journals might be a bit hard to check. You can check the cam lobes for wear though.

But don't be a wuss, take a cam cap off and check the journals.

 

My woo woo hurts just thinking about this.

 

If you were really dedicated, you would drop the oil pan and unbolt a rod to check the rod bearings and crank journals.


But, being a low oil pressure system, and never having heard of one singe rod bearing failure, that may not be necessary....... for the normal person. But we are talking about the infamous PHM here.....

 

Watched a video of some guys doing a rebuild of the 4.7L on their 1st Gen Tundra last night. One of the piston rods broke which lead to the rebuild.

Looked like a cool little project that took some time. Last little bit of the video they were running to Oriellys to pick up a $140 Bosch o2 Sensor and some other made in china crap. Too bad they didn’t come here for parts help. Overall, they did a very nice job using quality stuff.

 

I actually looked at doing this a few years ago, but couldn’t get the bolts loose.

 

Pretty sure I watched the same video. A couple young guys right? He broke a rod by going through a huge mud puddle and sucking water into the engine. I don't think he mentions it in the video but says it on his instagram page.

 

Think I've seen that video. I think it broke when he drove through a large deep puddle of water. Not sure if that had anything to do with that?

I'll be putting a new battery in my truck nezt month. I use a block heater at home but at work the truck doesn't get plugged in.

Northstar or Odyssey for a battery in super cold temperatures down to -40F? AGM worth the extra cost?

 

Sanded to 3000 grit and now with 2k clear coat. (Drying)

 

I'm not 100% sure why or how, but I know higher pressure oil systems like to eat rod bearings. My SHO motors need rod bearings replaced every 120k or when they go bad due to lack of proper oil changes. They'll start knocking on startup, no motor oil condition or level, which my 3.2L car is currently doing. Starts up in the 30s then drops to about 2 psi. PFA because, you know, we like pics. Like, a lot.






But yeah, I'm sure I butchered that reason so I'm sure someone smarter than me has the right answer.

 

Dude I work with just offered 14k to buy my truck. Used vehicle market is bananas right now.

Not going to lie I though about it since I only paid 9 for it 3 years and 40k miles ago.

I understand supply/demand basics but I'm just really unclear what is causing this. I guess people are more comfortable buying cheaper used vehicles right now because of the economy? Or fewer people are trading in their vehicles so there are fewer used vehicles to pick from. At the same time, they are saying 20% of Toyota dealerships don't have a single Tacoma on the lot.

I've been watching that unfold on Tacomaworld. Some people are claiming they got offers from Carvana for MORE than they paid for their trucks 2 years ago. Or in other cases they are only losing $1-2K. Just for kicks, I put my vin# in and they offered me like $2,500

The problem with selling high is that you'd just end up overpaying for the replacement. The same thing is happening in the housing world right now.

 

Been shopping for GX460/4Runner rotors/calipers today. This is going to be an expensive upgrade unless I go aftermarket. Even NAPA wanted the same price for rotors as Toyota so I took them off the list for now. I tried car-part.com but there were no wrecked units within 100 miles of me. I'm about to call some local dealerships and see if they will price match Cool Springs since shipping rotors is so expensive.

 

That's why I said no, did think about it though as the wife is currently working from home until next year sometime so we don't really need 2 vehicles.

 

I know what you mean. I've got a friend that wants to sell me his 2003 Pontiac Bonneville. It's nearly mint with only 80,000 miles. It was his grandpa's and has been meticulously maintained. He wants $1,200 for it. We've been talking about buying it all year as a D.D for me. But now that COVID has us both working from home it's really hard to justify a 3rd vehicle. It's totally a grandpa mobile but it would be a nice daily.

 

Sounds like a smokin' deal.

I got a complete aftermarket kit (13WL) on Amazon. Been super happy With them. They haven’t even surface rusted yet!

 

He's a good friend and I would feel shitty doing that. He just doesn't know anything about cars. I think I'm going to help him sell it for more. He should be able to get at least $2,500 for it I would think.
