My truck (2019 with just under 50,000 miles) is at the dealership right now, I took it in yesterday because as I was trying to fill up the tank the pump would kick off immediately. Tried multiple pumps same issue, unfortunately I was about 50 miles from home and under a 1/4 of a tank so I ended up buying a small gas can and filling the gas can then using the can to fill the truck. I could only put in gas for a couple seconds before it would spit gas back at me. Just got word from the dealership that they believe the charcoal canister failed, which makes sense because the gas tank vents through the canister.

I figured I’d post up this info in case other people have the same issue and just to vent a little as this is the second warranty issue I’ve had on this truck and I’m just a little frustrated.

They should be done with my truck Saturday I’ll update you guys when I get my truck back.

I learned the hard way on this on a previous truck. What I was doing was filling the truck up and when the pump would shut off I would always try and add some more to get to an even number to be charged. A mechanic told me that is the worst thing you can do as this will cause a premature issue with the charcoal canister. So now that I have learned the hard way I never pump more gas once the handle shuts off.

Maybe, if you top off all the time, your canister could be bad. But, I'd bet it's your roll over valve is stuck in the closed position. It'll be interesting to see what the final conclusion is.

What the mechanic told you is true, and good advice. I never usually fill mine past 3/4 of a tank.

I never top of my tank, just let it fill till the pump auto stops so that shouldn’t be an issue.

I didn’t think about the roll over valve, hopefully it’s not that as I need my truck back and the tech is already headed down the charcoal canister path.

Agreed on the “when it clicks off” method.

Ran into this issue a long time ago on a Chevy.. it took a lot of getting used to especially if you are OCD and like even numbers.

this seems somewhat common on our trucks. Also, sometimes, faulty gas pumps at the gas stations. Did you only try one or is it across the board ?

Sorry man, I've been through this already. If you're not in the habit of topping off I'm 90% certain it's the roll over valve. I've seen this issue on about 10 trucks. I dropped my tank and popped my open, super easy to do. Hopefully they can get yours done quickly. Might wanna suggest they check it. Best of luck with it.

I’ll mention it to my service advisor in the morning. There supposed to get a hold of me when the “warranty guy” gets in tomorrow morning.

Yeah this is my understanding as well. Never keep filling after the pump shuts off, you put fuel in parts of the system that aren't designed to have fuel in them and over time will mess it up. I cringe when i'm at the gas station and hear people keep pumping and clicking their full tanks.

I haven't seen this problem on anything other than the 38 gal tanks. But, on the 38 the roll over valve is located about 7" down inside the tank. With the tank on the ground and the fill tube removed you can see the shiny valve with a flashlight. There's an anti-siphon "bullseye" that I removed, then I was able to pop the valve open with a long screwdriver. Then I got a little aggressive with the screwdriver and permanently disabled the valve because I felt certain the problem would reoccur.

Hmmm. I wonder if my issue is the charcoal canister plugged after 10 years or the roll valve.
Thanks for detailing, it is so annoying to have to hold the fuel pump on. If i have more than 1/8th of a tank, the thing just clicks off constantly

I had a local shop mid job installing a new fill tube for me but the gate(roll valve?) popped open when they were taking it apart and all good. Cleaned it up a bit and put it back in. Only charged me for labor and have been good since(last year+)

The symptom I experienced with the stuck valve was constant clicking off of the pump, about every 2-3 seconds when attempting to fill and it was every time I tried to put gas in the tank. Since you're able to fill it sometimes maybe it's your canister???? But I'm not sure. @osidepunker had a similar problem but I think it fixed itself. He doesn't DD his truck and I think his canister may have "dried out" on it's own????

Mine does it depending on fuel level. If im at 1/4 or above, Gas pump clicks off Immediately. It’s only annoying on road trips when i fill up every potty break for the kids

I bought my 2017 Tundra new off the lot. Have filled it up until the pump automatically disengages. Then hit the pump handle one more time to "top it off." Have done this for every fill up of this trucks life. Now at 63,000 miles. Never had a problem.

Have done this also on my 1997 T100 that I've owned since new and pumped gas into for 23 years and not had any problems.

Have done this on 3 other new-off-the-lot Toyotas in the last 23 years and not had any problems.

    Hmmmm.............

Right? I could see how, left for a couple weeks, the canister could "dry out" where he lives. And he used to top off ALL the time, but has since stopped.

my workaround for a while was barely holding the gas on and letting it trickle in super slow. I even had a setup where i used a couple pens to hold the handle in the perfect spot. one time when i was filling this way from empty (an over 30 minute job) I think the guys inside thought something was wrong and reset the pump. I was just about full and the charge never went through on my credit card :p.

Got word that it’s definitely the charcoal canister. Mentioned the roll over valve but was assured it is the canister. They’re covering it under warranty so I didn’t push the issue. Hopefully I get my truck back this weekend.

Just got the truck back. They didn’t really put gas in it so I’m not sure how they could have tested the fix, so I guess we’ll see when I fill it up tonight. Fingers crossed it’s fix.

Well... the charcoal canister was fine. I’m going to have to deal with the deal the dealer tomorrow. I’m going to ask them to order the tank before I bring the truck in so I’m not with out my truck for days again.

Yep same issue. No change I consider dropping my tank myself but don’t have time today and I have to have my truck for work so I’m going to get them to order a tank and change it out same day
