Quick update from today...

Spent some time polishing the right side of the bed and it came out looking decent. I got the rear camera installed. I mounted it at the base of the bumper, right below the hitch mount. The passenger seat is about as good as I can get it, but the driver's side will probably be replaced. And, I got the right rear mudflap and the right side bed cap installed, since I'm done with the paint on that side.

Right side of the bed... I still need to clean and touch up the doors on the right side.



There's a dent along the bottom of the rear door that I'm going to attempt to straighten out. We'll see how it comes out...

I got the 2 remaining bed bolts in the mail a few days ago, so I got them installed and all 6 are tight now. Next step is the Spray-In bed liner.



I just ordered the Raptor 4 liter spray kit (in black) which comes with the gun, so that'll be next weeks project.

And the front passenger seat is done. It's got some scratches and a few nicks, but at least it's clean.



The driver's seat bottom is pretty rough, so maybe in the spring I'll invest in new seat bottoms and maybe new carpet.

Wow! Your work is amazing! I just picked up a 2003 Tundra yesterday and I'd like to start repairing the frame also, it's not in the worst shape but I'd like to prevent anymore rust from growing.

I'll snap some photos tomorrow and post them and see what you think. I'm leasing a small warehouse space starting next month too, so that's why I'd like to take the bed off and start repairing the frame so then I won't have to worry about the frame falling apart on me in the future.

 

What paint did you use for the frame?

 

Chassis Saver. Bought it through Amazon

 

Just a quick update from yesterday.

Didn't do a whole lot.. Just didn't feel like working on the truck much. I did manage to clean up and polish the tailgate.
Talk about polishing a turd..... I really should replace it, but I've spent so much already, I have to stop somewhere.
I got the driver's seat bottom and back cleaned up. That bottom is Rough, but it'll have to do for now. I also cleaned up the driver's door panel and the rear seat, which isn't too bad. Just a few scratches from something being put on the seats (probably a toolbox or???)

Today when I get home, I'll continue with cleaning the paint on the left side of the bed, and then reinstall the freshly painted rail cap.

Here's the driver's seat. As bad as it is, there are no holes, which is surprising..



Door panel was dirty, but thankfully not beat up




The back seat is good to go. Just a little wear showing.



Here's the tailgate... The paint isn't horrible, but the interior will be much better after I apply the Raptor Liner next week.




Like I said, rough, but we're getting there.

Just a few things to post

I got my Raptor kit in the mail today... Looking forward to that this weekend..

I got a box in the mail from a fellow member - Dennis (Slamkad) with my skid plate. He did an outstanding job boxing it up. Can't thank Dennis enough.

And, I got to meet Mikey (Stuck in the 00's) On Tuesday when he picked up the radio amplifier. I'm glad it went to a good home.

This is the 4 liter Raptor kit. I got it on eBay for 95.00 dollars. I had a 25 dollar Appreciation coupon for being an early eBay user. I joined in 1998. The Liner kit came with a basic gun, so after I'm finished, I'll be happy to pass it on to someone who is planning on doing this same job.




I got the skid plate out of the box after work today and cleaned it up. Its really in great condition. Thanks again Dennis!

Yeah, not so much... Still doing better than expected, but I really have to start putting the brakes on my spending... ( picture wife with rolling pin glaring at me....)

 

I feel the same way, I just bought my Tundra last Friday but I've already spent more money on ordering parts then I expected but it will be worth it in the long run! I just ordered some POR-15 last night so once that arrives then I'll start prepping up the frame to apply it! At least it's not snowing yet otherwise I wouldn't drive it until I get the POR-15 on the frame!

 

My ‘Reinvestment’ in 2.5 years thus far is about $8k and 200 man hours at least.

Works out to be around $267 a month, or 1/3 the price of a turd payment.

 

Just stumbled across this...awesome build with some great information.

 

And with $6k invested in this truck, you could sell it all day long for much more than that. I’d say you’ve gotten a pretty good deal on that, plus the learning experience to pass on to others, which is priceless.

Time for an update.

I spent the last few days going over all the scratches with touch up paint and then systematically wet sanding each and every panel on this thing.
After wet sanding, I used a high speed buffer with compound to clean the paint, and then finished with the orbital buffer and wax.

I gotta say, it's as smooth as glass and the finish really came back. I did sand a little too vigorously in a couple small spots, and exposed the primer (woops)...

Overall I'm happy with the end result. Next is prepping the bed for the Raptor liner, which will start in the morning.



I pulled that door panel off the right rear door and took a look at the lower section to see if I could push that dent out at all, and I just couldn't get anything in there without making it look worse.



The windows were covered with dirt and overspray, but after spending some time with a razor blade and some Windex, they cleaned up.



I'm pretty happy with the front end. The headlights cleaned up and I had a boatload of little chips I had to touch up. It looks better, but the paint doesn't perfectly match. It'll do....

Time for an update:

Got out in the garage this morning and started prepping the bed for the Raptor Liner. I went over the whole blasted thing with 120 and my arms felt like jello after I was done. After masking and covering everything with paper, I started spraying the liner on, and I gotta say, it came out looking fantastic and was super easy to spray on, very forgiving and dried to the touch within an hour.

I also cleaned up the 4 tie down lugs that are mounted in the corners. Overall, I'm very happy with the end result.
It's true, prep work is 90% of doing this. After sanding, I cleaned the entire bed with Naptha and went over any spots that still had a shine to them. I hit the few spots that were bare metal with some etching primer, and got the bed liner kit opened up.

Super easy to use. The kit came with four 28 ounce bottles and a 32 ounce can of the hardner. Put 8 ounces in the bottle and shake well, and spray away.

On to the photos....

Here's the bed after about 2 hours of sanding




And here we are about an hour later, after I sprayed the Liner in place.



It was really that easy. Set the compressor at 50 PSI and start shootin.

While the bed liner was drying, I put the tie down lugs and hardware in the media blast cabinet, and then gave them a coat of Chrome Silver.



And the finished product.. Tie down lugs installed and caps back on the side walls.

So, that pretty much wraps up the exterior work. Next up is cleaning the carpet and the rest of the interior.

Tomorrow my family is finally able to bury my dad. He passed away back in March and it's been impossible to arrange the service due to Covid. My mom didn't want less than 10 people there, so we've had to wait until the state allowed up to 30. So, no work on the truck for a few days.

I only work 2 days this week, so I'll be hitting the final areas of the truck next weekend and I hope to take it for an alignment next Monday.

It looks wondeful. If I had an air compressor this is the route I would go. Rustoleum bed liner for mine, eventually...
