What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Yeah. I saw some nice copper and brass ones with offset cooling tubes for in the $800 range. Reportedly, they give a 10% decrease in heat.

 

Cooper/brass isn’t the best idea in these trucks because the coolant doesn’t play nice with it

 

So my free Blackstone kit came in today. Very cool set up.

Am I supposed to send in a sample of
my oil, as-is, the way it came when I brought the truck home from the seller?

 

I would, yes. That would give you a baseline for future analysis to compare to.

 

Yep. I think they say it's best to let it drain for a few seconds before getting a sample, FYI.

Goldie went in a second time for the airbag inflator recall. In the process the finish on the lid of the airbag lost some of its color and had black plastic showing through.
The service writer had a crew on the lot and it was shot with beige paint to cover the black ~ I sure hope this repair lasts. It's an understatement to say I'm disappointed with all of this.
At some point while the first airbag service was performed I suspect the technician used some sort of solvent that left the airbag lid with a tacky surface which lifted the beige finish.

 

wow... we've done tons of the airbags and have never had that happen

AR's are definitely feminine. Finicky, need to be cleaned all the time, high maintenance. AK's are masculine. Throw it in the mud and it still works, not very accurate, takes a lot of punishment.

 

Awful. They probably had low IQ guy on your truck. I think that part is discontinued.

 

I had to start back in the office last week so i drove my tundra a few days.

Was thinking that I still had an exhaust leak by the headers on the driver side because of the noise in the cab.

Then I remembered @FirstGenVol mentioning the steering shaft seal and I should probably check/replace it.

Well, today I inspected it...Ordering one now...

 

Repaired broken tab on left headlight

Used CA glue to tack it on first. I know it would not hold.

Then drilled some tiny holes and used pieces of a large paper clip to loop in there to serve as reinforcements. Applied JB plastic clear epoxy.

 

Passed a pretty rad Porsche on the freeway this morning. He couldn't hang with me.

not sure that would pass the "bumpers" threshold for street legal, but maybe old enough to be an antique. Nice sighting regardless.

 

Yeah I got excited when I spotted it. We were nearby a Porsche race facility so he may have been headed there. Surprisingly I couldn't hear his motor.

 

Went ahead and installed my MaxxFan. I still need to cut the shroud down for the inside to clean up the install but it's in! Now I just have to get all the fiberglass out my ass...

Good job, hope my write-up helped! And hopefully the screws will hold in just the fiberglass alone without a wood frame to bite into. Definitely a little cleaner from the inside.

 

When my Tundra's engine performance just seemed "sloppy," I figured cleaning the throttle body shouldn't hurt. That was one dirty TB! All clean.


Before, I thought this was probably some overrated task bored people take on when they've run out of mods to do---boy, was I wrong.

NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE. The improved throttle response is noticeable, it somehow sounds different, and I swear my oil pressure is lower.

Obviously, replaced the crusty gasket with a new one. Obviously, OEM.


That part collected dust in the garage for a year before I tackled the job yesterday... I'd been too scared of all the lines, hoses, and plugs to disconnect. I'm proud of how far I've come now in my mechanical ability thanks to this site, YouTube, and the Haynes manual.

I also replaced my fuel filter.



Some will say it's a lifetime part, but I say if something takes abuse for 270K miles it needs replacement sometime.

Please learn from the mistake I made in this job!

Originally I bought the filter from Amazon, which seemed legit and even came in Toyota packaging. It was not an OEM part and poured gas all over the pavement upon startup. Wasted time and effort. Spent just a little more and bought directly from Toyota with zero problems.

Will undoubtedly see some increase in MPG with these two preventative maintenances complete. Plus, I even spotted a missing crossmember bolt to replace!

 

I used the RV self-leveling silicone underneath it, then screwed it in then silicone around the edge (and on top of each screw head) so I feel like the 16 screws + silicone SHOULD do the job but I am a little concerned due to the small radius in the topper. We shall see. Definitely appreciate the write-up. I did watch one other video as well with a similar topper and they didn't use the wood so I wanted to give it a shot without for exactly that reason, cleaner look but it's an easy fix if it doesn't work!

We're supposed to get rain today so I'll get to see if we get any leaks. I really dread cleaning all this fiberglass up though. I should have worn pants/long sleeves and gloves the first time around. I will during clean up in this 105+ degree weather!!!

Nice work. Its amazing what the little tune up things do for our trucks performance. Keep it up and all those little tunes add up to your truck being like new again. That Throttle Cable Adjust will make your pedal feel firm. I just remembered that the adjustment is at the counteracting nuts.

 

Looking at the daystar poly lower control arm bushings, anyone have experience with them? Oem is expensive...

Also, I see moog has a set of greasable cam adjustment bolts, I want spc for peace of mind but it would be nice to have a grease zerk down there all ready to go. Any Input?

 

What was the p/n for the fuel filter?

 

Just buy the LCA with the bushings already in place. I’ve read of individuals trying to save money on this by removing/pressing in new bushings only to be defeated. Your call.

 

Your 05 shouldn’t have a filter.

From what I've read the daystar bushings reuse the outer metal sleeve. It seems quite simple to press them out and insert the new ones. What was the defeat of others so I have an idea of the can of worms?

 

From memory, the defeat was that it seemed as simple as you say but when the actual execution phase began thats when things went south. Old bushing crusted. Old sleeves unusable. New bushings messed up in pressing. Money wasted on new bushings. ‘Shoulda bought new LCA instead of trying to save a little’.

Not saying it can’t be done. I haven’t tried it so I don’t know exactly what I’m talking about. Someone will prove me wrong. I’m looking at it from a time cost/benefit analysis. Spend a little to save a lot of time. If the savings are great, then spend the time. If not, then spend a little money.
