Remote start

I traded in my Tahoe for a Tundra in October. Loved the remote start on the Tahoe. Hate it on the Tundra. Still happy with my new ride though!

 

Well, after putting in the Fortin Evo one, i am sold on the product. I would definitely recommend to buy. Easy install, works great and a good price. I would check out Anderson electronics on ebay if you are going to purchase.

 

Has anybody had experience with "Code Alarm" brand remote starters?
Seems to be comparable to compustar. I've had a compustar in my GM but Just little better deal and a friendlier local shop doing the codes vs compustars.

I installed the EVO ONE couple weeks ago and it works great. I like the truck doesn't shut off when you put your key in and hit the brake to put it in gear to drive off. I also like you can use your factory remote. I got mine from Crutchfield.

 

Remote start question 1: Did you use T-taps? Had any issues with them?

Remote start question 2: There's a few spots where it says relays need to be used, is this necessary?

 

Also, I redeemed my wirecolor token for the wrong year model range. Apparently theres one for 2007 to 2009 and one for 2010 to 2013.

Anyone have the wirecolor diagram for 2007 to 2009? I PDF'd the 2010 to 2013 in case anyone wants it.

 

So just finished the preliminary install the Fortin Evo-One in my 2017 Platinum. I haven't tie-wrapped and secured the EVO-One module yet.

So my question, for those who installed the EVO-One, where did you end up tie-wrapping and securing their EVO-One module. A lot of places this could be secured under the dash. Just looking for some lesson learned.

Once I'm completely finished, I will provide a write up of my experience and a few tips and simple tools I purchased to make the install go more smoothly.

Suffice it to say, this thing is awesome.

 

Definitely a nice remote start. I put mine up under the dash closer to the left. The antenna is in the brain and i wanted to place it so that i can optimize the range. So far i can get close to 50yds plus.

 

First and foremost....if anyone is looking for a remote start and is willing to do the install or perhaps have someone else.. Get the Fortin Evo-One with the T-Harness and don't think twice. And I recommend Anderson Electronics via Ebay. He will flash the EVO-One before you get it, ships super fast, and you just have to plug it in. He is also authorized dealer for Fortin products.


I ended up putting the module on the far left wall, below the left duct and zip tied it to a metal section. When you pull off the instrument panel (below the steering wheel), you have easy access to it.

I also bought the Fortin Remote Kit with the two 2-way remotes as I wanted the extra range. It's completely plug and play and works great and programming it takes about 30 seconds. I also zip tied the RF Remote kit antenna (looks like another key FOB) to the duct as well so everything is up and out of the way, but yet easy access for maintenance, if needed.

Like a lot of folks here, I purchased mine from Anderson Electronics, via Ebay. Wanted to give a shout out to Anderson Electronics he was extremely helpful when I had a few questions. So were the folks at Fortin. Always answered the phone quickly and returned calls quickly.


As far as installation is concerned, the hardest part of this whole install is getting the panels off and locating the wires. And that is more time consuming than difficult. After studying instructions from Fortin and watching a few videos on You Tube, I was able to plan out the install. I took my time and soldered and shrink wrapped and used electrical tape on the five other splices. Before I buttoned everything up, I did a connectivity test of th EVO-One by going through the programming steps. Once I verified everything was working and programmed, including the RF Remotes, I disconnected all the wires and looked for a suitable place to secure the EVO-One module and settled on the far left corner of the dash, inside the dash, and just below the left vent.

1) For those who aren't sure they want to solder, here are a few tips to assist in the soldering. I picked up this from Amazon. Never used it before today, but I've always had a difficult time holding wires together so I thought i would give it a shot. This thing was awesome and kept the two wires together without me having to hold them and allowed me to solder them easily with one hand. You take the right alligator clip and clip it to the factory wire (after you've stripped it) and then while holding down the alligator clip on the left side, slowly slide the wire into position and in between the clip and once you joined the two stranded wires, just let go of the alligator clip... Presto....both wires are held in place.. take some solder strips and fold over the join and now you literally have a one handed soldering operation.

2) I purchased a small battery powered Weller portable soldering iron from Lowes. Was $20 bucks and perfect for this install. Heats up in about 45 seconds and has super small tip for the 20-24 gauge connections and super light weight. Just turn it off between solder points. I also used the solder strips and cut 1/4 inch strips and folded them over the wires. You merely touch the solder iron to the joint and the solder flows. Again, a one handed operation this way. Total cost for the Evo-One with Harness was about 180 with shipping and the remote kit was 100. Just south of $300. The cheapest 2-way remote i could get installed by a reputable installer was the CompuStart for $600 installed and that only came with one 2-way remote and a backup 1way remote. Both of mine are 2way. They mentioned having to use diodes in the install and that was all i needed to hear.

I just had a Compustar put in a few months ago. I was sold on the EVO, but decided to give the Compustar a shot as the place installing said that you can use the OEM Keyfob. 3 Clicks and boom it's on. It will continue to run if I put the key in and click once to on. Only shuts off after run time, or brake pedal. It's been working great. Cost me about 220 installed.

I have a Viper on mine. It works. I can lock or unlock the doors, it starts fine and stays on until you put the key in and turn it or if you hit the brake pedal without the key the engines stops. Never had any problems with it.

 

I am leaning OEM as well for the same reasons - When I read on some of the sources sites, they say "must be installed by toyota tech...."
Now I know some of this is must $$ making BS for the dealership - but one I found said you have to go into Techstream to program - which is a dealer only deal - for me at least. IS this true or do you have a work-around?

The Fortin is also on my radar and blinking heavily...

 

The Toyota one was very easy to install. You can Google the part number and find a pdf of the instructions. No scanner needed, the instructions tell you what to do, it's a sequence of turning key on and off and opening closing door that initializes the remote start.
On another note, I have also installed the fortin in vehicles as well. Not a bad option, if you buy their harness the you will only have to cut a few wires in your truck. Only thing is you have to buy the flash module to only use it once, but you can resell on ebay

 

From what I gather, the Fortin from Anderson Electronics - the recommended vendor in this thread - will come flashed to your vehicle, which removes the need for purchasing that part. It will cost about $100 less than I've found the OEM online through a Toyota dealer. I found an OEM for $300 online. Fortin will be right at $200 with shipping. I've found the Fortin for less but it won't come flashed.

I also understand the Fortin can be made compatible with a smart phone app, and/or adapted to a RF remote for extended range. Does the OEM have any such capabilities or be adapted with aftermarket add-ons?

I'm still leaning OEM. Cutting a few wires does not concern me. But I did spend a considerable amount to get 125k full Monty warranty and I do not want some pencil pushing dealership twerp screwing me out of it for an aftermarket part add on that interfaces with the ECM. That does concern me.

 

I'm not that knowledgeable on this topic however I bought a Toyota Tundra remote start off of Craig's list for $90 (never installed) and found installation instructions on line (not installed yet). Now I'm assuming with other remote starters you still have to put the key in and turn to on. Now imagine that all you have to do is turn the key a little bit more to restart a warm engine sure sounds better than cutting and splicing wires.

and I assume if you got into a started truck there might be some issues with your phone pairing up - may have to initiate that process? If you have to restart it, that is solved. The more I think about it, I really don't see that as all that much of an inconvenience. It's not like I use the remote start every time. I think it is probably a anti-theft thing more than a safety thing.

I wish I could find one for $90....

We recently put a Viper 1 mile 2 way with Smart Start in my wife's Highlander and she loves it. There is an app for the Apple Watch you can start your car from it.

 

Today I Installed a Fortin EVO-ONE to my TRD PRO, I have pictures step by step I might put everything together to make a Install guide, really easy install the hardest part is working with some of the tiny wires in the passenger side and parking lights.

I have worked myself into a situation where the dealer would actually give me this free of charge for my truck. I would install it. Or I could choose something else of equal value. Remote start is one thing I miss from the Ford I had. It was Ford's OEM - which did not shut off upon door opening, but the range was the same as unlocking the door, usually. Sometimes it got hanky. It also had a time limit - 15 minutes max. I can only remember a couple times I went past that and then because something deterred me on the way to the truck. I used it more than I thought I would in both summer and winter just to acclimate the cab some before I got in. It might be as little as 3 minutes - usually. Maybe more on cold mornings from home. I'm parked right outside the door so range was never an issue there. I hear people complaining about the range on the OEM and I wonder what their actual situation is. Who ever needs to start their truck a mile away??? I've checked the door unlock range on the Toyo and it is as good if not better than the Ford was. I guess if you worked in an office building and it took you a while to get to your truck out in the lot, maybe it would be an issue.

For me, the biggest problem is dang hot summers down south when parked all day at work. But even if I start the truck 30 seconds earlier as I'm walking across the parking lot, it helped that considerably. (I'm also considering installing the ceramic heat barrier tint on the windshield for that - in which case early start might become moot.) Cold butt in winter is not the biggest issue for me is my point. I'm just trying to gauge why people gripe so much about the OEM and if I would be one of them after a little while. I guess if it were free I could replace it and not be any worse off, but I'd be wasting some "free money" now.

The only other thing I miss from the Ford is the door keypad entry system. I used that more than I realized. No relief there though

If there are questions on voiding warranty if installing aftermarket items. Go and read the Magnus-Moss act of 1975. Basically says the dealer has to prove that the aftermarket part caused the failure before they can decline warranty repair.
