1st Gen Tundra Tire Setup

So I just got my 2005 DC Tundra a little more then a month ago and its ready for some new tires! I am running 265/70/17 right now and would like to achieve the biggest tire I can without a lift kit. I believe the truck has a leveling kit on it and I think I can fit 285/75/17 with some spacers so they don't hit the upper control arm. Any thoughts?

 

285’s will fit with a leveling kit and wheels that run 4.5 inch backspace. Still probably have some rub at full lock on the frame. Just part of it. You can go aftermarket for wheels or run wheel spacers, whichever your more comfortable with

285/75/17 and 285/70/17 is quite a bit different in terms of rub factor. Stick with the latter.

 

Don’t try 285/75’s without at least a 2” lift and a lot of cutting and bashing. Stick with 285/70’s and trim.

So far the MAX on 285/75/r16 that still rubs slightly at full full, but isn’t a deal breaker is Michelin Defender.

 

There is one, but it's a bit out of the way and not in first gen territory.

I began to search through it and in the first 10 pages there was only one green GEN1 with a monster truck lift rolling on 20”s if that tells you how useful that thread was.... 70 pages of mostly, “my 5.7” wears...

 

I have 285/75/17 with a 3" lift and I rubbed. I had to trim the pinch welds on the firewall and very little trimming on the front bumper plastic. Currently still using the stock UCA's too.

So what I have gathered from is that I can fit 275/70/17 no problems since I have the leveling kit. Do you think i could get away with 275/75/17 if I added 1.5 inch spacers, or even bigger?

 

Just go with 285/70/17 and adjust/trim if needed. Do you plan on aftermarket wheels or stockers?

 

I plan on getting some methods on down the road.

 

I would like not to do any trimming though if possible.

Yep, had a similar experience running 295/70/17 with a 3 inch lift.

 

FWIW: 285/75r17 st maxx on scs stealth 6’s, Spidertrax spacers on 2” lift and still rub after cutting pinch weld and taking a bfh to the firewall. Firewall tubing is in my future.

 

I think you will be fine with 275/70R17 if you have a leveling kit. That’s the route I am going after just putting 5100’s on all around.

1.5 – 2″ Leveling Kit (or less)
When installing a leveling kit, you might be able to fit some wider tires than what we have listed. It may require some trimming though, but it is possible.
Max tire sizes are:

• 16″ rims: 265/75 R16 – one inch taller but same width as factory
• 17″ rims: 275/70 R17 – 1.5 inches taller and 4/10ths wider than factory

 

It’ll happen at some point. But then I’ll want to swap in some 4.56’s and an arb. I’ll need the gears if I get a camper but then I’ll probably want to stick with 34’s. All I know is that I still rub when stuffed and I need to fix that.

I have a 3" lift with 285/75/17. I shaved the pinch welds and installed 1.25" spacers with no issues.

 

If you ever want to move to another setup, I may want your dregs
