I have a question about engine braking. We have so many steep roads here I've been showing my wife how to utilize lower gears to save the brakes. Or I'll stay in a low gear when going up a big hill. Does anyone else do this often? She asked if it was hard on the engine and I said I didn't think so. This is how I was taught as a teenager.

Google seems to agree but apparently some people have the misconception that it's hard on the engine. Curious to hear what you guys think.

"In this latest video from Engineering Explained, Jason Fenske walks us through how exactly engine braking works. Basically, when you're in gear and let off the throttle, the throttle valve closes, creating a vacuum with engine trying to pull in air. This causes the engine to slow down the driven wheels without having to use the actual brakes. It doesn't create any additional wear on the engine or transmission, nor does it waste any fuel."

Stay in the used market. Proceed, Meridian, Linn, Bryston and there are tons more.

under a grand I would say Linn or Proceed but you never know what may come up. I have an older Linn I can let go $300. If you dialed in the speakers position correctly then you would really appreciate what a quality amp can do. If you need some help dialing in your speakers I can give a quick tutorial

    Exactly this reason:

Ultimately we've seen the same. 7 friends of ours have relocated to various cheaper parts of the country now they can work remotely with the same company. We have another friend who relocated to Atlanta from the west coast. Sight-unseen, they bid 1.2mil for a house about 20% larger than ours. They thought nothing of it - the same house in Cali would've cost them 2.5 easy.

And thus the prices in Atlanta seem to be climbing, I assume it's the same everywhere. Our house, which we've had for almost 20 years now ... we tried to sell in 2011, couldn't even break-even on what we owed after ~10yrs of payments. Current Redfin/Zillow estimate for our house is 225% of our final list price in 2011 before pulling it off the market. WTF! We'd be lucky to sell and be able to buy back into our own neighborhood right now.

Good part is, we've got the Tundra, we've got the Highlander, both paid off for years, so it's just a mortgage and the ever-climbing prop/sewer tax to pay for now.

Cali and NY are crazy and Florida is not far behind. We actively watch the markets here and tried our best to invest in strong neighborhoods. At the moment our house that we purchased 3 years ago is up around $200k and the other we had for 5 years is up nearly $280k. If we can sell we may have enough to purchase out right, that would be sweet. I could work as a Walmart greeter if I don’t have a mortgage

@FirstGenVol I do it and have always done it in different cars, manual or auto.

For my truck I usually just flip OD off and let 3rd gear do the work. I have used 2nd on a steep hill before at slower speed.

I have heard arguments that it is somehow bad on the driveline and a set of brakes costs less than a transmission, but I've never had a transmission go bad. The argument says it puts a load on the coast side of gears but I don't think that does anything bad. Can't be much different than going 80 on the highway and letting off the gas to slow down.

That's interesting. Years ago I had an 04 Acura RSX that was an automatic but had the option to manually flip through the gears. It was my dad's car originally and between the two us we drove it that way most of the time. I gave that car hell and when I traded it in at 170K the transmission was still shifting like new.

Do you need the measurement of the 05-06 throttle body diameter?

I honestly just use my brakes, especially if I'm not towing. I'd rather replace brake pads then do extra wear and tear on my transmission or engine.. but idk

My trans will downshift automatically when I hit the brakes going downhill. Does the 4 speed not?

I mean it downshifts as if u were coasting on a flat. But it doesn't intentionally down shift to such a low gear to where u can feel any engine braking m

Nope and it will also upshift prematurely sometimes. I'll start going uphill and low speed and instead of holding 1st it will shift to 2nd too early.

Try disconnecting the battery for 10 mins and see if that resets the shift points.

Hey now! I don't get down like that! :D

Why would the DD injectors help? I thought they just add additional injection holes?

It will temporarily, but the brake tap downshift is a 5 speed thing. Us poor 4 speed guys have to hit OD or shift to 2nd manually.

Mine will shift up early as well if I'm light on the gas, I can prevent it by adding skinny pedal when I know it is planning to shift. I can make it shift up whenever I want with the gas pedal. After 12 years with my truck we are as bonded as a Kok-boru player and his horse.

On TS I once mentioned that "I pulled my shaft put of the tranny and some fluid came out, but seemed residual so I'm not worried" and I got a disappointed message from the moderator.

I was just explaining what to expect when changing the center carrier bearing.

I've always loved that body style, and cars of similar era. There is one very similar to this "locally" that was either a military car, or someone decided to paint it Olive drab, and add a side star. Its been at the same place for 3 or 4 years now. For the last 2 years its been on jack stands...

    It tempts me...

Since I was a teenager I have wanted to do a project like that on a late 60s or early 70s 280 SEL or similar. Like the one from Bates Motel, maybe even with Vera. One of my friends had one and the only bad thing was how damn slow it was.
