I want to install an aftermarket head unit for better navi and options like CarPlay. Maybe a pioneer or like.

I don't want to change anything else. Will the head unit work with the rest of my speakers/amps that I have?

Bonus question : can the factory mic be used with after market head units?

Not sure about the mic but it's a definitive yes on the playing with your speakers. No matter what, the speaker output will be the same for any unit you essentially plug in.

I'm definitely open for this discussion because I'm debating the same. I want nav and more functionality out of my radio then what the sr5 offers

Exactly. Where they gained on tow capacity, they lost in stereo. And yes, to my knowledge it will all still work just fine. The inputs will be all the same just not sure about the mic function. There are some pretty bad ass head units out right now that have some awesome features.

I did an audio system upgrade in my '16 CrewMax. I replaced everything except the HU. I did the mod incrementally and the first step was replacing the door speakers and tweeters. Just that alone improved system sound. The factory speakers have paper cones and are pretty much worthless. I suspect the greatest Head Unit you could buy will sound like crap through them.

If you want the biggest bang for the buck, go with new speakers. Then add on as you see the need.

We just did the Jensen VX7022 in our 2006 DC Tundra. There are lots of varying information on the speaker Ohms, etc. even the location of the JBL amps, ours was behind the rear seat, instead of under the factory head unit. It worked out well and we could have just did the head unit, but we replaced the speakers and added two amps, and a 10" sub with new 6.5" Pioneer speakers in the doors, leaving most all factory speaker and other wires, amp trigger, etc.

The JBL system is a bit of a pain compared to the non jbl system to replace the unit and keep the stock speakers. I had a JBL system on my previous 2015 Tundra and I kept the stock head unit by using Taco Tunes tuner kit and then I had a fully aftermarket speaker system and amps. If you install a pioneer navigation system it does come with its own microphone that plugs into the head unit. You can mount the micro phone in the same location as the stock microphone location. Keep in mind that the stock tweeters are tied into the navigation command system. So if you keep a stock JBL HU system and replace the tweeter speakers first you can loose your voice command from the JBL navigation. Personally if you replace your JBL system HU I would replace the speakers. Go to taco tunes if you want to replace the stock speakers with 6 1/2" round speakers. They have a very nicely machined plastic plate for the door speakers. Here is a pic of my speaker mounts. IMG_1294.jpg

I be posting my taco tunes ReCurve EZQ with the harness designed for the JBL system this week. I plan on using a completely aftermarket system and HU and I won't need it on this truck. This is the way to go if you want to keep the stock HU and add aftermarket speakers and amps. I paid $298 for it. PM me if your interested.

Here is the link on it.

I have the non-jbl/nav HU in my truck. I've replaced all speackers and amp and added subs. It made a HUGE difference obviously. The only thing left factory is the HU and I'm shopping around now as well. I considered buying OEM non-jbl nav unit to keep the factory look, but for the money and complaints I hear about the HU, I'm thinking aftermarket is the way to go. Buying aftermarket introduces things like modules to retain steering wheel controls, microphone and rear cam compatibility issues, etc.

Make sure if you try and use the stock rearview camera on an aftermarket HU to be careful. The aftermarket cameras are 12v and the stock is 6v. If my memory serves me correct you need a convertor to keep from frying the 6v stock rear view with a 12v lead from the aftermarket head unit.

I'm confused. So will the stock amps and speakers work with an afermarket HU? I really just want the headunit for the navi. I will upgrade the speakers later on. Not trying to dump hella $$$ on sounds right now.

Edit* question is for JBL system.

Yes you should be able to use the stock speakers and stock amps with an aftermarket HU. I was trying to give you some insight on other possible things to consider. I hope that helps. Look into Taco Tunes since he has done a lot of JBL systems.

Thanks! yeah I seen taco tunes and I'm sure eventually will end up upgrading the rest of the system. It's just hard for to replace everything and the truck is still pretty much brand new. In time though for sure.. the stock system sucks balls..

I was about to waste money on an aftermarket OEM replacement, when I came across a thread about getting the OEM camera to work with any aftermarket headunit. The voltage needs to drop to 6v exactly not 9v. Took my a few minutes to get the converter to stop at 6v. The mod is very cheap and easy to do.

Big Focal fan. Had my Vette done with a Kenwood DDX and Focal speakers and amp. No doubt in my mind the same will be done with my Tundra once it and I meet up at home. Crystal clear tunes is a must for any ride...

Oh wow did not know that. Anyone know if Crutchfield's kit drops the voltage for the stock rear cam?

I did this on an old 4runner and had issues with the steering wheel controls not working with the aftermarket head unit. they also added a new mic. This was in like 2007 when I took a 2005 sport edt. 4 runner and added navi and DVD. installer might just have given me a line, anything is possible right>?

I am looking for a JBL AMP for a 14 Crewmax Platinum. It is the 3 plug amp. Does anyone out there have one to sell?

No, the truck i bought had been in Baton Rouge last fall when it flooded. It had 6-8 inches of water in the truck and ruined the AMP

Gotcha! Are you on tundracrew on Facebook? If so I bet there are several people who sell there's since adding new ones.

If not email this guy. He does stereo install for a lot of Tundras. He may have an extra one.
