Is this too much rust?

So my 2014 Tundra finally arrived, got it for a great deal and it was from up north, some rust expected but not sure how much is too much and it only has 10k miles so guessing indoor storage didn't happen too often lol. Gonna take it to a mechanic to get it checked out but want to check in with everyone here first

Yeah that is what I am thinking unfortunately, forgot to add it's from 2014 so it has been out there quite a while. Just not sure how bad it is to fix it or if it's even worth it, but luckily I have some days to test it out or return.

 

I would be more worried that it’s a 2014 with only 10k miles; sitting for that long unused and likely a flood vehicle seems like I would steer very clear from that truck

 

Looks normal for a rust belt state. Where it was parked makes a difference too, there's a lot of moisture coming up if it's not parked on concrete.

 

Thats a decent amount of rust but nothing crazy if it was from the northeast. Negotiate a better price or send it back if you arent happy. Dont worry about those shocks/struts though. A 6112/5160 upgrade will take care of that

You could also take a wire wheel and some fluid film to clean it up and protect it.

 

So far the car rides excellent and the interior is flawless but just don't want it to become an issue later on.

Prices are very high around my area(GA) and got this one for $33,500 plus an extra $2000 trade in for my high mileage taco( if I go through the deal)..

My only concern is trade in value, I am considering a 2022/202 next gen Tundra and it's gonna suck if I get lowballed due to the fact that it's from the north and a bit rusty.

Tried a dealer just for the lols and they said 28k is around what they can offer based on the fact that it's from up north but they have some 70k miles Tundras for $36-37k lol

 

Damn, I see a lot of corroded bolt threads... Sorry bud, but that is a deal breaker for me. I know it only has 10k, but damn, that is a lot of rust/corrosion on your frame, diff/axle housing, pretty much all of your suspension.

 

Is it mostly surface or are chunks of rust falling off when you agitate it?

 

In Maine, that is a normal looking truck for 6 years of salt and snow filled winters.

 

Sadly, was hoping it would be stored better with such low mileage lol

How is this normally dealt with in Maine? Just ignored until it becomes a problem many years in the future or is there any treatment to reverse or slow it down? If it's gonna cost a good chunk I might be better off returning it since also keeping my doors open for an earlier trade in/sell in case next gen Tundra looks good lol

 

Get you some of this. I used it on my boat trailer and it worked very well. Little time consuming but will stop or slow extreme corrosion. I did 1 heavy coat let it dry for 5 days then used some good paint over it and 2 coats of clear and it looked like a new trailer. Used this on my F250 frame as well, good stuff, POR-15 is good stuff to slow and seal corrosion too.

 

When I traded in my '11 Pathfinder with 60k miles they didnt even look under it. It was full of rust but no major issues...just surface rust. If you really like the truck, grab a wire wheel and some fluid film and spend a couple of hours under the truck. Then you just re-apply the fluid film once a year and you are all set. I wouldnt expect the rust to get any worse if the truck is staying in Georgia.

More info the better. I think with these trucks that even people out of the rust belt states could benefit from rust protection

 

My wife's old land cruiser had a little surface rust that we did a rust conversion spray then did a coat of black rustoleum. Could even do the liquid film. Not a biggy. Not a bad trade off for those super low miles.

 

Chassis saver by magnet paints is good stuff also

I personally am scared of rust on these trucks. I’m in northwest Ga and try to buy southern only trucks

 

I'd thoroughly check out the underside of the bed for rust. The rust on the frame and shocks gets a lot of attention, but it was the holes in the bed that forced me to sell my last tundra

 

I have lived in the northeast pretty much my entire 46 years (Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania)......and I can say definitively I have never had rust like that on any of my vehicles. I wouldn’t trust that a truck that is seven years old with only 10,000 miles hasn’t been snatched up previously by someone with a lot more knowledge than myself.....basically, I find it hard to believe that this truck is still available with such low miles being that old. My mom always tells me “if it seems too good to be true, it’s because it probably is.”

I would steer clear of this vehicle and continue your search.

 

2yrs ago I got my Platinum 2wd for $34k with 17k No rust, FL truck "some old dude's truck". Keep looking, check FL. Georgia Is not far away.

If you're in Georgia, I don't think it will be a problem for you as it won't rust much more. But I can imagine it looks like it's from up north compared to the Georgia vehicles. In NH where I am you'll see rust after one winter.

Which website. I found a lot of these car delivery online places like carvana and vroom has cars with crash history. Did you pull a carfax?

 

I would return it, you should be able to find a rust free example somewhere in the South East.

 

Im in GA (but from PA) and would not be cool with that much rust.

I would shop for a truck from the South. There is no salt on the roads down here and your truck will still look pretty new underneath even several years old.

 

Corroseal is the Sh1t! I just put that on my rusted 2014 frame i picked up that had been sitting, looked similar to yours. I was blown away, it Neutralizes the rust in 20 mins, and turns it back into a nicely blacked primed frame. worked on bolts, rims, hitch, leaf springs... i was blown away at results. Once it's neutralized, and no major damage was ever done, it'll be fine if you keep it clean, or paint over, or recoat every year if you want. it's easy to brush it on, warning though, it'll stain the crap out of driveway....

 

Anyone have pictures of fendors rusted out on a Toyota truck? I have never seen one, i see 5 year old Rams and Chevy's eating right through alright near the wheels, never seen it happen on a Toyota though.

 

I have a 14. I would be concerned with that rust. It has been setting a lot. That is not good for trucks/cars. I have used wool wax on mine. I don't want rust. Rust is very hard to repair. I feel like you can do better for 33 grand. My SR with a 4.6 was cheaper than that new.

 

Being here in Michigan with a 2015 at 31k miles, what you have there is normal.
Don't sweat it. Enjoy the truck. Michigan is salt on the roads and rust on our vehicles... it's a way and fact of life.
You dudes down South will feel differently...

I see all the mud some of you let get under your rides when you go off-roadin' and it makes me shudder. I know, "At least mud washes off!" I agree.
Getting and treating rust on vehicles is just something we get used to up here...yes, I hate the looks of it but it happens.

 

Does anyone even try to do preventive care up north? lol

The biggest problem with the rust here is that it is very uncommon and I trade in/sell value matters a lot since I might like the next gen..

Got the opinion of 2 different places here and it wasn't really favorable, they just seem to hate rust on the south.

Thanks to everyone with the suggestions, I am sure repairing the rust with the recommended items is quite feasible but the general attitude around here is pretty bad around this kind of issue. I use the truck for work every day and seems like I would have a few days down time to really get it fixed properly.

It's a shame because the truck rides very nicely otherwise. $33.5k seemed like a great deal since prices around GA and everyone are extremely inflated right now so I might end up returning to Carvana and keep on looking or wait a few months.

On the other hand, if someone is willing to tackle this issue, be on the lookout soon
