There's been some speculation on this...I wonder if it'll ever happen

nissan seems to be making a pretty big push towards the diesel market now, toyota's not going to really have a choice but to compete soon.

I'm glad that Toyota is finally getting "serious" with putting a diesel in the Tundra. I think they missed out on a big opportunity by not putting a diesel in the Tundra first. They could have easily put a V6 Diesel that gets good mileage like the Ram or a V8 Cummins in the Tundra but instead they let Ram and Nissan break headlines with that. But I still find it funny how the Tundra is more "truck like" than all the trucks out there with its tradition V8 that's not built for fuel economy and how it's the heaviest truck out there.

I bought this on 1/12/14 and have added a code alarm remote start, an Alpine head unit with Nav and a backup camera.
    Very interesting.

I damn sure hope Toyota actually gets around to doing this at some point. I like my current Tundra just fine, but I would absolutely trade it for a diesel with similar power.

I kinda wish Toyota would figure out a way to utilize their own diesels. The 4.5 twin turbo V8 diesel in the Land Cruiser would be uber cool imo.

2016 Tundra and Titan are supposed to be available with ISV5.0 V8 Cummins turbo diesel, 300 hp and 500 ft lbs of torque, enough to make your mouth water isn't it?

i hate to say it unless it has a hino diesel engine its a waste.. Sorry cummings engines are cheap they are not all that great. More of there parts are made in china now.. I was hoping for a hino engine but if i want a cummings engine i will buy a pos dodge..

Cummins engines are def better than the dura max and power stroke. Problem I have is that now 3 brands will have the same or close to the same engine. The dodge has the inline 6 (6.7L).

I wish Toyota would bring their diesel engine from overseas but its easier to contract with someone like Cummings who has already gone through all the emissions bull than to go through it with the Toyota diesel.

Diesel engines over seas have higher compression ratios then the ones in the states.. Ones here are LOWER compression ratio to keep up with the EPA BS here in the states...

Would absolutely buy a diesel Tundra. Asked the guy who sold me my pickup, said he had no idea if or when they'd get 'em. Toyota needs to get on it though, this has been talked about for at least seven years.

Not to be a hater but I just don't see all the hype and excitement for a 300hp, 500tq engine when our 5.7 gets 381hp,400tq stock? Aren't diesels more costly and harder to maintain? While MPGs are better under load isn't the fuel savings offset by a higher fuel cost for diesel? And if you really wanted 500+tq wouldn't you wanted it mated with a heavy duty frame for load capacities? Isn't it reasonable to expect that you'll have to pay more a diesel Tundra? I guess for me I understand why we don't have 1/2 ton diesel Tundra currently. It'll be interesting to see how the Titan does 3 or 4 years after the newness wears off.

I've driven diesels for work, the TQ is nice but for me and probably most who use their 1/2 ton as a daily driver and weekend adventures I just don't see it. I'd just rather advocate for other enhancements and options.

A 5.0 cummins would be a sweet option but lets hope they don't take the "ugly stick" to the truck like they did the titan... :puke:

I was going to wait for the 2016 diesel release but verified with Toyota Customer Relations that they will not be available for 2016. Maybe not even for 2017. The gov has put so many restrictions on current development that it is cost prohibitive. So I settled and bought my 2015 with the 5.7 V8 gas hog. Love the truck! Too bad they will loose market to Nisson's.

The biggest reason I'd like to own a diesel Tundra is the upgradeability factor. For example, on a 6.4L Ford you can take the engine to 550 hp with only a CAI, an exhaust and a chip. You are correct in the higher cost of maintenance, the need for a HD frame for hauling serious weight, and pretty much everything else, but for some its a worthy tradeoff.

I had to stop by the local Toyota dealer to pick up a speed sensor wire harness today. I asked about the diesel for 2016 . Not happening according to the salesman I talked to.

Not necessarily. The salesmen will be (should be) forewarned so they can bone up on the specs and be able to sell their product. Typical for most new products, no matter what "it" may be. Can't sell something if you have no clue what you are going to be selling and how it's better than the competition. The salesmen at Stevenson's East new that there was no diesel coming out, and sure enough, they were right. Major auto shows are the biggest giveaway. Everybody and their brother uses the LA and Detroit auto shows to show off their latest and greatest. Not to mention the various trade mags that aren't sold at your local super. Toyota has had zip the last few years at auto shows, especially with the Tundra, yawn, until this year with the new fantastic selling Taco. I'm thinkin the Tundra is next for a true major "upgrade". Titan XD diesel is selling out at most dealers before they are sold. Toyota is no doubt aware of this and will not settle for this too long. Toyota execs are slow about changing things, but not stupid.

Disagree. I drove a 6.7L Cummins around a year ago and that motor sucked. My 2012 Duramax at my last job was one hell of a truck, and my buddy's F250 Platinum is a close second.

Cummins is nothing but a name and the parts don't get me start China.

Duramax is a Isuzu engine.. Isuzu/GM in Ohio they are good engines.

Ford's 6.7 nice but leave it STOCK... don't do anything to it, including chips don't.

If Toyota would put the hino engine in the tundra that would be a runner but sadly it will not pass EPA standards here in USA.

Go down to your nearest GMC dealer and price out the new"Ultimate" Denali 4X4. 61K is peanuts.

@Mike the only Cummins engine I'd want is a 5.9L.
