Well knowing what you intend to throw up there might provoke some ideas/discussion. Also aluminum or f-glass camper shell? Prime the pump...

I have a glass shell, and I will have kayaks up there. 150# minimum and more is better.

The best overhead rack I ever had on one of my trucks was made of square tubing. Think of a T rising from the receiver hitch on the rear, and one on the front, too. Top of the T was as wide as the truck bed...almost...and each end of the top bar had a 3" vertical riser on the end...a stop so to speak. The top bar pinned to the vertical bar, and the vertical bar pinned into the receiver hitch. Used to carry a jonboat (aluminum) on it, and sometimes two canoes. The boats were bungeed to the top bar of each T, and secured to the bumpers front and rear with a rope that went from a bumper corner up through the bow eye (front), and transom handles (rear) and then back down to the other corner of the bumper (think inverted V). Can't remember what I paid the welder to make this, but it was less $150...tubing and labor. When I didn't have anything to carry on the rack, it was in pieces in the bed locked up in the camper shell.
This was on a 90 F150 super cab, two door with short bed and an less-than-new Craigslist fiberglass camper shell.
Did okay down the road as long as you weren't trying to exceed 65 mph...above that it made a wicked roaring sound (wind around the boats). Had to watch the clearance/height though...no trips through the drive-thru. Lost the rack when the truck got totalled. That's my .02 cents...hope it is food for thought.

Rear seat delete, onboard air, wobble wayfinder, ultimate drawer system, center console, put the pamp in glamper shell, and some I'll NEVER tell...
Copied this one for about $200. Took some doing, but well worth it and would do again. Also spent time updating the inside to put the pamper in glamping...you know, for the misses....
