How long for 2020 Tundras to drop in price?

Hi everyone. I’ve been wanting to upgrade my 2010 ford ranger to a full size pick up for a while now. I’ve been comparing the Tundra and F150 and have been on the fence about them due to the Tundra’s reliability and the Ford’s tech. I came to the conclusion that a 2020 Tundra would be a good compromise between tech (really want Apple car play) and reliability. Only problem is that they are a little too far out of my price range. My budget for a comfortable car payment is 35k. How long do you think it will take for 2020 models to drop in price to be within 35-40k? Looking for 4 wheel drive and crew cab, most likely a limited trim.

The reason I ask is I’m trying to decide between roughing it out in my Ranger with 150k miles on it while I wait for 2020 Tundra prices to drop, going for an older model tundra (2017/2018) or going for a 2017 F150.

You could always get a 17/18 Tundra and add in an aftermarket stereo with apple car play. Just an option.

The problem you're going to run into is supply and demand is king right now, (low supply and high demand) so prices are high and steady (or even rising). I'm seeing 2019's and older with 10-30k miles on them going for more than I paid for a brand new truck last month. I just read another thread where folks are being offered more than they paid for their trucks within the last year just so the dealers can have inventory to work with. Not sure I understand that, but if the dealers think they can flip them for a profit then I suppose its a thing. I wouldn't hold your breathe for a 2020 to get down to that price range anytime soon.

On the flip side, there are plenty of older models in that range available. You'd just have to shop around and see whats out there. You could always add an aftermarket HU with Apple Carplay if that's really what you're after. Might be a little costly to upgrade to get the tech you're after, but all said, still way less than the $50k you'd be looking at for a 2020 Limited CM 4x4.

At least 4 years IMO. My truck will be 4 years old in October and has only depreciated about $10k since new.

I agree with this whole response.

And on a side note, if anyone wants to over pay for a 2014 Tundra CM, I’m always open to accepting bundles of cash.

This is likely what I’ll be doing. Didn’t know much about how these trucks depreciate so if I was only a year or two away from finding something in my price range I was just gonna keep going with the truck I have. Side note, any preferences on this forum for aftermarket radios that look flush and clean when installed?

I purchased my 2016 TRD Crew in January and right now my truck is worth several thousand more in trade than I paid. And even more if I were to sell it myself. But I think sometimes things happen for a reason- I was not in the best position to buy a truck when I did, but needed it and with the deal that I got, I am keeping her. No way I could come close to replacing it (with another Toyota) for what I paid.

Now if I was open to looking at Ram or GM, now would be the time to deal.

This. I lucked out in that I purchased a 2020 Tundra *literally* the day that we were sent home to telework. Not only has this enabled me to pay off almost 1/3 of the truck in 5 months, but due to the market, my truck is worth about 2x what I owe on it.

Were I to buy a truck right now, it likely wouldn't be a Tundra. I'd wait, personally.

Hate to say it, but I think you missed the boat on 2020s. The demand was nill and supply still there a few months ago, but now as mentioned demand high and supply none. Supposedly, down in Texas, the 2021s will start hitting lots as soon as this week and spread from there. You could start calling around and see if dealers have allocations yet and put your name in for one, but you won't be able to deal. The supply of new 2020s will be non existent once the 21 MY hits, as there are none to go around right now and I doubt Toyota is pumping too many out, but rather switching to the 2021 MY. Good luck. It may be worth waiting 6 months and see what happens. I seem to see deals typically the week after Christmas around here, but obviously COVID has changed the landscape this year so who knows. A lot of places are even minimizing Black Friday sales around here.

I'm not too sure on preferences. I'd slide over to the audio section on this forum and I'm sure there's a ton of info in there. But yeah these trucks don't depreciate much. Helps people out when they want to sell and upgrade lol

Nothing is going lower. Check your prices on:

    1) Food

    2) Building Supplies

    3) Service Shop Repair Labor

$$$. You gotta pay to play right now. $$$

I looked into a 2019 a couple of months ago. They still weren’t discounting them at all, so you can probably forget about getting a deal on a 2020 anytime soon. Especially considering inventory is barren as hell right now.

OP, you won't find a 2020 Limited Crewmax under 40k new, and likely not under 40k used. right now you're be lucky to find new or used on an SR5 under 40k. My 19 CM Limited (20k miles) already received a 41k trade offer, and I've had calls from dealers claiming they'll beat that offer (who knows if that's accurate). I paid 43.5k for it a year ago.
