Cold Air Intake

Any thoughts? Just picked up a left over 2019 trd pro. Did go for the extended factory warranty so wanted some feedback on the trd cold air intake vs the k&n, s&b..warranty thoughts?

Toyota has a really well designed stock intake. Just swap the air filter with a TRD / K&N and call it a day. If you want to get all fancy pants, install the TRD air flow accelerator while you're at it. As much as I like the TRD CAI, the fact it uses the stock bottom tells me all I need to know. I personally can't justify spending the money for it.

 

I like the way a cold air intake looks. It really adds to an engine bay especially when several other mods have been done. It gives a real finished look. But the price tag on some of them are ridiculous. I just watched the vid on the SABM mod. That looks really slick. I might try that one.

 

The bottom is reused and yes it is pricey but it is awesome when paired with the trd dual exhaust.

 

Get an AFE DRY drop in filter. If you want a little more throttle, get a Sprint booster. Those 2 parts will cost around the same as a CAI

 

Don't be afraid to check out the Stillen unit. I'm way happy with it.

Check out the new Stillen unit for sure...have it on my 2020 Platinum and love it...proven results on dyno, that’s why I went with it over the others and no regrets...truck feels more responsive and the little extra sound paired with my exhaust is awesome...hope it helps!

Did you go with a dry or oiled filter?

 

I went with the oiled...I’ve heard that oiled filters give a little better sound so I decided that was the route I wanted to go

Absolutely, couldn’t agree more!...this is probably the only CAI I would recommend as well!

 

Not knowing anything about CAI’s other than what I have read here and on YouTube and never having used one, what is the deciding factor to purchase a CAI or to not purchase one?

I would say most people get them based on looks, sound, and the promise of power gains. Personally, when I look at Toyota's stock design, I just don't see how you can really improve it. Air enters through the fender well, goes through the filter, and travels a very short distance in a straight line directly to the throttle body. It is the most unobstructive stock design I've ever seen. Filter swap for me but if I bought one, it would be the TRD CAI just so I could have more TRD parts on my truck. I still debate it to this day....

 

Increasing airflow into the engine has little benefit if you
don't also increase the engines ability to exhaust that air.

How I increased horsepower and torque on a budget.


DAP tune: 15-20 hp peak gain, and 20-30 low & mid-range power gain with 91 octane.

BAMuffler cat-back with single stock tail pipe: 3 to 10 hp, no loss in low end torque.

Drop in aFe Magnum FLOW Pro DRY S Air Filter: 5 to 10 hp, but only if the exhaust is freed up.

These 3 changes cost me about $1500 and they made a world of difference in how the engine performs... keeping the MAF clean ensures peak performance.

 

The only intake I've seen available for our trucks that I would even consider is the Stillen. Actually, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get one soon. Anything else you're likely going to lose power. The TRD Pro version is just a fancy looking stock intake, I highly doubt it does anything more than the regular stock intake, maybe make a little more noise. I just don't see anything different in the design or where the air comes from to make me think it makes any power over stock (OK, maybe 1 HP more). And my hood is closed 99.5% of the time, so I don't really need a big $500 TRD logo hiding underneath the hood for no reason.

Whether its worth it for your needs is really up to you. If you want a little more power (marginal) and a little more sound, and potentially a bump in MPG (again, marginal) then I'd say its worth it. Like Rex said above, until you start stacking complimentary mods each one on its own has very little real impact. A good intake and a tuned exhaust will allow the motor to operate more efficiently and should provide a slight bump in power and MPG. Add a tune and now you're cooking. It does sound awesome with an intake and exhaust, for whatever that's worth. Again, whether its worth the initial cost is up to you.

 

I currently have the TRD duel exhaust I picked up awhile ago when they had that TRD forty year anniversary forty percent off sale. I have a 2019 and I don’t think there is a tune out for it that I am aware of. I agree with the Stillen design which is why I’m so interested in it. I’ve read about the TRD CAI being a waste for a long time, so that’s why I got excited about this one coming out. I will go ahead and try it out and see how it goes. Thanks for your information!
