They put dye in the oil and checked it after 2 weeks and said it was not leaking. I don't believe it, because I still smell burning oil occasionally (a lot less than before). I will have them check it again in a couple of weeks.

Interested in how they take care of it this time around. Just noticed mine leaking during my 30k service interval. Appointment set for Tuesday to see how they approach this one. Mine has absolutely no oil near the valve cover, only oil on the RTV.

Update for everyone...just got my truck back after the dealership had it for 2 days. This is the fourth time I've brought it there for the oil issue. The first time, they replaced the valve cover gasket. The second time they put dye in the oil. The third time they said they could not see any oil leak even with the black light and dye. The fourth time, they acknowledged that it was leaking from the cam tower on the right side. They replaced the cam seals.

Just got it back today and only time will tell if they did it correctly or not. The only positive side is that I was due for an oil change and they did it as part of the repair.

The dealership has been cordial every time and given me a loaner while they tried to figure out what was going on. However, from day one, I asked them to check for a cam tower leak. It took them 4 times to finally diagnose and fix this. Hopefully, I can close the book on this saga. Crossing my fingers.

I bought my truck with an extended toyota warranty up to 6 yrs/75k miles so luckily i've got plenty of warranty left.

I'm not a mechanic, so maybe someone else can chime in, but I drove with the leak for about 4 months before it was finally fixed (hopefully fixed). Make sure you tell them to check for leaking at the cam tower seal. The first time they tried to fix mine, they replaced the valve cover gasket which was not where the leak was coming from.

Get that fixed and documented. I can't remember the cost when it is out of warranty, but it is over 2k dollars.

And yes, it can get worse.

I have the same symptoms as the OP. My 2015 dbl cab 5.7 went in for front/rear diff & trans case fluid change at 30K. I had frame corrosion treatment when I purchased the truck. I thought maybe it was overspray that was causing the smell. I told the Service Manager of the undercoat and described the smell. I also told them about this thread and I wanted them to check the entire engine. They found a small leak on the right hand (bank 2) cam housing that was dripping on the exhaust. Service Manager said he'd call me Monday to schedule the repair which is a warranty item. The truck will be there overnight, as suggested by one of the other members here. I'll get a free loaner vehicle. I've been very impressed with the way my dealer has handled this situation.
Front/rear diff & trans case fluid change was $231.
Sounds like they tear the motor apart for this. If this happened to you would you trade in for a new truck?

Will do I take it in on Monday. Mine is leaking from both side. How does yours drive? Any difference in performance? Does it still feel solid?

Well mine is leaking from both side! It really sucks. This is the first vehicle I buy brand new, and kinda get sick to my stomach to know they will have to tear the motor apart, will this effect it performance once it's fixed, will it be as reliable, how will it drive, will I be able to tow. So many questions go through my mind. I love this truck. Don't really want to trade it in cause I kinda made it my own, and what if I trade in and the next one has the same issue?

So this where I found the oil leak on both side, so I clean it up and I went out today and I let the truck idle while I went in the store, came home and nothing no leaks. So I dunno, does it take a while to start leaking again?

I have not noticed any difference in the way the tundra drives. I think the leak has been fixed since i can no longer smell any burning oil or see any. I think these tend to be very small leaks, at least mine was. Mine was only on the passengers side.

Just read this thread and been searching others, has Toyota resolved this issue on 16-up tundras? Is it as common as it seems?

That's what I was afraid of. Getting ready to pull the trigger on a 2017 and was hoping they had this ironed out. Toyota doesn't have many issues but boy when it dies happen they let it plague them for a long time.

So took my truck in this morning and I wasn't there 20min and the mechanic knew right away where it was leaking from, said cam housing was leaking both side. Is that same thing as cam tower?

Wow. Customer bings you a problem. Customer tells you exactly what is causing that problem, and it takes you 4 tries to figure it out. Now that's some first class diagnosis, right there.

As cordial as they may be, I think I'd be looking for a different dealer. Some of the nicest people I know are completely incompetent. I don't let them work on my truck either.

wow this is scary if out of warranty. Is this an issue with all 5.7 Tundras? I wonder how many Tundras are affected by this.

Glad you resolved yours under warranty OP

You would think they ironed out all the issues of a 10 year old motor instead of making it worst.... Things like this makes me want to purchase extended warranty...
