What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

The oil filter has a certain amount of oil (1/4 quart?) in it when you pull that off which accounts for the disparity in your drainage amount. Also, I (do not recco this to anyone) turn the engine on after draining the oil (plug screwed in/old filter still on) and let it run for about 2 seconds which pumps about 1/2 quart out.

Adding 6.5 quarts gets me right at the perfect halfway mark on the dipstick. 7 quarts gets me right at the high line. I’ve run both amounts no problems.

 

Yzzd-3 is the same size as always.

 

Ya ok. I have half a qt left, so I can fill in the morning. For High heat is it better to be in the middle or high for oil? I read somewhere to have it closer to full, or am I making shit up?

 

Not sure, but anywhere between middle and high is good.

 

6.5 quarts when engine is warm and your parked on a level surface and the truck sits for 5 minutes off, should be dead nuts on the top dot

 

Thats right. I read in the FSM that the factory fill (brand new engine) is 7 quarts. Drain and fill 6.5 quarts.

 

Ok got the 5100's on and completed the leaf spring swap. All up it was a 4 hour job even though I have been juicing the bolts with penetrant for 5 days now. The ATS Springs are very good quality and I could not find any flaws on them. I got the HD springs and Jarod at ATS said I would get 1.5 to 2.5 inches. It yeilded exactly 2 1/4 on both sides. I'm sure it will settle a little and stay at 2".

Short trip around the block (4 mile trip here in flat boring north dakota) they are firm but holy heck if it didn't smooth out the wash boards and potholes! It's like day and night difference. My oem Springs gave good service and showed little wear besides rust and pretty loose between the leafs but otherwise still comfortable.

I had to shave off about an 1/8 off the center pin that rests on the axel so it would sit flush. I also had to trim the top of the pin so the OEM bumps top would fit. I'll do wheelers superbumps soon. Other than that they fit like a glove and will take some serious weight and abuse I'm sure.

 

Installed the transmission cooler and thermostat today.

 

Those ‘Leaf Keepers’ look solid. Much better than the OEM ones that bend and allow the leafs to splay. Glad those are part of the deal on your new leafs as they are a must for wherever I get my new leafs.

 

They have made them really well. I was about $500 otd with new u bolts and I couldn't think there's a better deal out there. The customs available for our trucks probably have a little edge but pound for pound these are the winner in my mind.

 

Your install is very clean. I might do some shifting around of my setup after seeing yours A+ job buddy

 

What size spacer and tires you running? I just bought a set of 4Runner snowflake wheels.

 

I've got the spidertrax 1.25 spacers. Pretty awesome stuff, well built and feels safe. They are absolutly necessary for the 4 runner snowflakes as they are to far inward of the fender flares without spacers. I'm running 265/70/17 falken wildpeaks right now but will be moving up to 285/70 when 1stgenoffroad gets me my dobinsons springs for the front. Keep an eye on Amazon as they have deals on the spidertrax often. Cheers from ND

 

I've seen several reports of "dipstick too short" here on Tundras.com and this may be what your issue is.

edit - yep. Thursday seems to be the cheap travel date. A person Phoenix to Chicago is $210 on Sept. 10th with no discounts. No a bad price if shipping parts is similar to shipping peoples.

That's weird yours did that. Mine went in no problem. The top of the pin was a little long so I had to cut that down so the bump stops would fit

 

Mine is so clear I have to basically look for where it's "wet"

 

Yeah it was a little bit of a pain to take the first one off and chop the 1/8 off but maybe they have newer hardwear on them now. It was a small problem easily fixed. I've been driving all day and I'm so impressed with the ride quality now...can not wait to get my springs in so I can get the front lifted up level.

 

I replaced my front rotors. No more vibration during braking. Now I have another issue. After the new rotors were installed, I took it for a spin to down some testing. I did an emergency stop and felt the ABS kick in once but not on subsequent emergency stops. The truck now brakes smoothly and stays straight, no more pedal wobble or steering wheel shake. But now I feel the ass end bouncing up and down a bit when slowing down at times. Maybe I need to adjust the proportioning valve back there again? Which way do I need to adjust it to have the rear brakes grab a bit more? I think I also need a tire balance which I will try and get done tomorrow after work.

 

Adjust nuts UP for more rear brake powers.

 

Getting this basket ready to mount. Most of the reviews said it's best to seal all the joints and gaps before spraying it with bedliner.



Also, here are a few more shots of the sliders. Really pleased with these. I like the fact that they offer a little protection from all the rocks these K02's like to throw.

 

How's the quality of the basket? I want to do that prinsu style rack build but not sure if I will have time before snow starts dropping in October. Headed south from north Dakota and like to gtfo when I have a good opportunity in the weather.

Where and how much did you get the sliders for?

 

The basket is about what you would expect from an item at this price point, made in China. It's good, not great. One reviewer said he carried a 33" tire in it. It will take a little abuse but not a ton. It should be perfect for my needs though, assuming I can mount my awning to it.

The sliders are made by White Knuckle Offroad. They are expensive but there are only a few options for our trucks. Only 2 good ones for access cabs. Brute Force ships theirs with the legs off so by the time I paid for all the welding I think it would have been about the same if not more.

@FirstGenVol fair enough, I saw a guy in the parking lot that had a ice chest (45 yeti) in his and it was bent down to the rooftop. Guy said he hit some speed bumps pretty good in his neighborhood and forgot the chest was up there lol but hey mounting a awning to it is a different story. Probably best suited for that job.

Ouch those are spendy. I'm pretty savvy with a welder so I've been eyeing these but hope they would hold up to jacking the truck up.

Decided to hunt down the source of my exhaust leak on my JBA headers. I replaced the collector gaskets and sealed them with high temp rtv, but it didn't stop the leak. Anyone know why it would still be leaking after I did that?
