We did a pop-up camper for 18 years when our kids were growing up. I was awesome, as long as you weren't moving to a different location every night (up, down, up, down, blah, blah, blah...)

When the kids left I told the Mrs, if we do any more camping, it's going to be something I don't have to put up and take down.

So, I found a cheap topper on CL, painted it to match the truck, built a queen size bed in the back (4" memory foam mattress) and that's what we use now.

It's super comfortable with no real setup time. All our gear fits under the bed and clothing goes behind the front seat along with the cooler.

Here you can see the bed in the back with some plastic totes underneath. There's additional storage in the cabinet along the driver's side of the bed.
    IMG_20190513_191712824.jpg

Here you can see our old Coleman camp kitchen, the Mrs potty tent, collapsible alum table, and a couple of chairs. All that fits under the bed (except the chairs) when we're traveling.
    Utah-CO 2019-2456~2.jpg

This definitely wouldn't work for everybody but, we've learned to travel pretty light so this setup is very simple, efficient, comfy, and works great for us.

Of course there are pros and cons to every setup. I think I've tried 'em all at some point. A bed tent can be nice but limits the use of the bed for storage. I've built platforms and pull outs for greater storage. I found it best to just a shell instead of the actual tent to make more room for storage.
I really prefer the RTT though, I find it much more comfortable and convenient. Bed bars and an inexpensive tent can be had new for roughly 1,000. With the RTT I can still get 2 full spare tires in the bed and can leave it a mess when I fold it up and no one knows. LOL
Good luck with whatever you decide

Crewmax or dbl cab? Long bed or short bed?

The cheaper setup to figure everything out would be the in bed tent. You can always sell it when done with it. If you have a longer bed then a cap setup would be nice and stealth. I have a RTT and you can check out my setup in the build thread (link in sig). But it was not cheap and I knew what I wanted. One thing for sure whichever way you go, you and your wife will enjoy being off the ground. Good luck with your choice and post up what you do.

All fit in the bed can do 6 days with 2 kids. Couldn’t spend like 5k on a roof top tent lol

I do the same. It build a board so floor is flat. Then put a 4 inch foam mattress on top.

I have this. I like it . Ive had them on my last 3 trucks. I don’t have room to park an RV at home and they stress me out towing them.

I try to keep things light cheap and simple. Gas can, two 6 gal water cans, cooler, and recovery boards ratchet strapped in. Shovel and chairs. Then my bike mount on a 2x4 that also acts as a bed divider. Tent, propane stove, and food stored in the cab. Sets up pretty quick. Tailgate works great as a cook station with a propane stove. Especially great when I’m moving to fishing spots often.

Doing it over again would have probably started with an easy up tent like a gazelle and a nice exped pad, but thanks to the long setup time of my first tent my wife wanted fast setup and sealed living area, thus we ended up with a Four Wheel Camper. Ordered in November, just got her home this week.

How do you like the Cook Partner? Which model? Can you run it off the small Coleman bottled propane canisters?

I absolutely love it such great quality. It’s the 18 and no I run a big tank off it. They can run the small one but u need an adapter that they sell.

Have had motorhomes, high-end TTs, ground tents etc.

All of them are a compromise. This is a great middle ground for how we like to camp. I leave the RTT on the truck. We can go for quick overnights, access the best locations, and stay away from campgrounds.

I’m in process of building a SMALL off-road “support” trailer. My goal is complete camp setup/tear down in under five minutes including kitchen, hot shower, etc.

For me, the downside of most camping is prep time/setup/kitchen and camp cleanup/hot shower. If you can solve those issues, everyone loves the rest of camping.

Roofnest opens with gas struts. Set ladder, pop in window poles and ya done. It has a skylight for star gazing.

Plan is to have trailer include one generator and two Trojan deep cycles, 2x35lb propane, water heater, sink, plumbed lines for shower, 80 gallon water tank, bike rack, and the grill.

The RTT only gets popped just before bed so you don’t lose transportation.

Trailer serves as basecamp/secure point for bikes etc.

    Inflatable Hobie’s on roof.

I looked at those 375? I’m pretty sure my Coleman one was 45. I couldn't justify it even if the wife is a chef and cash isn't a problem for me.

I have the Coleman as well. It is a decent unit, but very small and adjustability of the burners is a bit lacking. I do like that it uses white gas, however.

Just starting out gathering camping gear. Picked this 5 person tent at a yard sale for $30. Was brand new. I was going to put the rain fly on but we were back yard camping and the weather was perfect. Eventually, I’ll get a Soft Topper so the girlfriend an I can go for long drives and just pick a spot and climb in back for the night.
