When I was in last time for the turn signal recall, and I was talking to the service manager, we overheard the service writer in the next cubicle talking on the phone about a warranty issue. Manager looks a me and says, Toyota wants everything back for inspection and if we warranty something and they deny, the dealer eats it. So at least my dealership is very slow and methodical on some warranty stuff.

So if your concern is the transmission failing out of warranty, why not just buy an extended warranty? You can get a 8yr/125,000 mile, bumper to bumper. $0 deductible warranty for a few hundred dollars more than the cost of a trans cooler, and you don't have to worry about possibly voiding your warranty.

    100% this.

If it was me, having a MY19/20, I'd go with the extended Toyota Platinum Warranty 110% over adding a cooler.

Let's be honest, will most people keep the truck longer than 125k? No.

You can also get money back, prorate, off the warranty or sell the vehicle with it.

I personally did buy the extended warranty, but that dosent stop you from being stranded in the wilds of Alaska in the middle of your only 2 week vacation of the year after buying a $40k truck towing your $20k trailer. God forbid it fails in canada and then you play the game of toyota of canada talking to toyota of US. If I wanted that gamble, then I would be towing with a cheap high mileage truck and pocket the $30k savings. But our time is worth something and so is ruined vacations.

Really? issues with Canada? have you not read the benefits to the agreement you signed?

No argument regarding vacation interruption, but a vehicle in general is a mechanical device that is prone to failure at any moment - gearbox or not.

    https://www.sc.toyotafinancial.com/web/tfs/pub/contents/vsa/TFS_VSA_Platinum_VSA_eBrochure.pdf

A Toyota Extra Care VSA offers:
    • Protection for applicable vehicle components after your vehicle warranty expires1
    • 24/7 Roadside Assistance throughout the life of your Agreement
    • Reimbursements for covered vehicle rentals, meals and lodging
    • Access to a network of Toyota dealers throughout the U.S. and Canada
    • Protection backed by the strength and stability of Toyota

IMO, a "catastrophic" gearbox failure due to excessive temps, will be something you will be able to sense over time. I really do not think a heat based, overall gearbox failure, will be something that will occur in the spur of the moment out of nowhere WITHOUT prior signs, indications that there is a gearbox problem developing/in the works. As us forum going members are concerned, I envision a lot of us being in tune with out vehicles, anomalies and everyday behaviors.

That's not how it works. Warranty work is done at the discretion of the service manager. The warranty parts are saved in the parts department. A Toyota warranty rep pays a visit approx once a month and check out the parts for warranty approval. Once he has inspected the parts and approved them they are discarded if there isn't a core value. When a transmission is replaced communication between TASC and the device manager takes place if there is any doubt about the cause of the failure. If the service manager sends a core back and something is discovered that would make it not qualify for warranty then the dealers claim is denied and the dealer is then stuck with the bill. This makes some service managers very nervous when they see "fixes" that have been applied and are reluctant to file a warranty claim.

I personally had a fuel pump in my 2014 FJ fail in canada while under warranty. Toyota Canada denied it cause Toyota US wouldnt pay. I paid out of pocket to finish my trip and then Toyota US reimbursed me at a later date. No idea if the Canadian dealer was shitting me or not. I called Toyota US while at the Canadian dealer and opened a ticket but the lady said it would be 3 days before they would respond.

Ok get this after 40 minutes on the phone calling Toyota Hq in Plano Texas. Most of it was on hold, the female i spoke with spoke to the product specialist and assured me and stated, “the trans cooler is built into the transmission.”

lets hear it, i am waiting for the email with this statement.

This is all true. You all are freaking out about nothing. Toyota would not have pulled the trans cooler if the benefits of pulling it (cheaper) were outweighed by the high warranty costs of a potential failure.

Sounds like Toyota is considering the engine coolant circuit as the gearbox cooler.

if you look at the circuit, there is a heater core between the engine and trans (assuming its electric, i cannot go verify this on my truck atm).
Electric portion used during engine warm-up / cat heating phase and then turned off there after.
Coolant circulates through the engine cooling system still, liguid to liguid exchange, for "gearbox cooling".

You won't get an email from them with that statement other than it's a trans fluid warming puck, it does not cool to any efficient number

Again, if i tow within my tundras limits i get any issues I will buy me a 3/4 ton. The price for most plain sr5 4wd tundra you can buy any 4x4 3/4 ton gas power.

I doubt that is going to happen. Even in the unlikely event that the tans failed in your Tundra your not going to take the chance to spending north of 60K to have likely major issues with engines and transmissions from the domestic big three.

That’s what I’ve decided as well. If the transmission on my Tundra implodes because of heat (which I regard as highly unlikely) I will buy a GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4. Then I’ll probably have a whole new set of problems to complain about on another forum.

Right? Look at this thread, people complaining/debating on problems that don't even exist yet. Domestics have plenty of real problems to deal with.

If none of you still don't understand how our external transmission cooler has been removed. Here is a video that I just stumbled across accidentally (not our trucks). Instead of sending the transmission fluid to the radiator to warm up, this is how the puck functions. But we (2019 and 2020) it is missing the thermostat, and the external transmission cooler as shown in this video. This is how all the Tundra's have been plumbed (minus the warmer) prior to removing it in 2019 and 2020

I believe you are mistaken as to the build/cooling routing of the Tundra.

The tundra does not sent the ATF fluid itself to the radiator.
Engine coolant lines are routed to the puck where the liquid to liquid heat exchange is completed.
At least this is how I interpret the diagrams for the ATF and Engine Coolant Circuits.
