No such thing as Magnusson-Moss in Canada. No lemon law, either. Corporations get to treat consumers however they want.

Some more data... my ride home from work today.
I still think this runs a little warm for a truck with no trailer behind it.
I have all the parts to add the cooler sitting on my workbench. Just gotta find the time to do it.

Completely wrong on first count and mostly wrong on second.
Canada version of Magnusson-Moss = Consumer Protection Acts that every province has, literally the exact same as Magnusson-Moss.
Canada version of Lemon Law = CAMVAP. While a much more recent version of the Lemon Law it uses arbitration to settle disputes.

    fantastic post thank you.

it does seem strange to have a warmer and an aux cooler to take out the same heat ( and more of course)

and I figured that shift mapping was a part of this.

I've just tripped over this issue while looking hard at the Tundra....

I don't think this is an acceptable omission by Toyota.

Closing my file on the Tundra and walking away would be a first time since 1987 that I haven't had a Toyota in the family fleet....

Additional information on the oil temp capability.

Tldr: I have a technical contact at a major lube oil refiner and manufacturer that confirms that group 3 oils can withstand 300 degF sustained.

If Ws is in fact a group 3 then It makes sense that 302F is the alarm point.

same contact mentioned that regular mineral oils like group 2 and 1 can only take185 F combined.

    long version...

I’m still working with a contact at Mobil to get an understanding of the composition of ws.

however in my day job right now I’m working on changing a huge fleet of lube oils from 45+ permutations of brands, viscosity, and base oil types. this is on large industrial plant equipment that spans turbines, compressors, gearboxes, and pumps.

we are working with a major lube oil refiner and manufacturer to rationalize this fleet.

we have successfully put group 3 oils in high temp service at 240 to 250 F bearing temps on turbines.

The technical contact I work with has indicated that group 3 base oils can take 300 F on sustained basis.

these decisions are based on bearing type, load , previous oils used, temps, pressures, and contact with process contaminants, and machine criticality. Down time on these machines can cost millions in lost production and repair.

it looks to me like WS is a group 3 oil from the sds.

Overall it looks like a legit claim that the fluid can withstand 300F.

ive done the same thing, i have a direct representative with exxonmobil. Im in heavy trucking. She LEGALLY can NOT and will NOT tell me the specifications of WS fluid, she can't tell me anything. Its proprietary to Toyota. Toyota can tell us as we are the consumer and should tell us but they dont have to. but if enough people bring this concern to toyota they will have to follow up and do their own research on it. I still have another Toyota dealer digging into this information for me on what the temps are stated to be in the repair manual. They have a field engineer in contact, no response yet. Yes this has been going on for 2 weeks and i have no response and no answer. I am about to start calling ALL toyota dealers within a 100 mile radius of me and have them call Toyota and ask the very same questions i am asking the other dealers. I am trying to find out what i can find out but with no answers yet im still kinda dead in the water

If WS fluid can stand 300F then why didn't they remove the ambient cooler when the Tundra can out in 2007? The 2007 uses WS. They would have know the spec then and could have saved millions in expenses over the next eleven years.

Also if your right in that WS can be safely used up to 300F why isn't Toyota just saying that fact for a reason the 19-20 trucks don't have the ambient cooler?

    Good question.

could have been a long term plan.

in 2007 or so they knew 1234 was coming. They knew it meant a compressor and condenser change. And they likely also wanted to try having no oil cooler using the margin in a high temp fluid.

they likely created test plans with this and ran the trucks with different shift maps until satisfied temps were managed to their targets.

OEMs make changes like this well in advance.

what is on a dealer lot As a new unit is actually 4-5 years old In eyes of designers.

But why not just remove it in 2007?

I do believe in the 4 to 5 years in development time but eleven years and knowing R1234YF was going to be the refrigerant of choice is unlikely.

If Toyota knew the WS was good to 300F they would have come out and said that the day the cooler was removed. Cheif engineer Mike Sweer has been asked a number of times why the cooler was removed and never once mentioned that WS was good to 300F. If he had there would be a lot less doubt from Tundra owners.

Have you ever tried using the Magnusion-Moss Warranty Act by any chance?

I have, and unless it's totally ridiculous you will most likely spend a whole lot of money to lose. For instance, if your rear axle fails, them telling you the Kenwood head unit that was installed voided your drivetrain warranty would be a losing battle for them. Put the shoe on the other foot, you do a DAP tune, NOS, and have your truck towed in with drag radials installed with a failed transmission/t-case/rear axle/engine failure...bend over, you about to take it hard.

Adding a cooler with factory parts and even going as far as the dealership installing them is probably the safest bet. Most expensive, but safest.

This happened on my 05 Dodge 2500. I lost an engine/turbo warranty due to an aftermarket intake. They said the aftermarket intake "dusted" the compressor and most likely the engine. I pulled out the old faithful Magnusion-Moss warranty act from the glovebox (yeah, I printed one out) and they just laughed. I talked with the dealership manager and owner and they pretty much told me to pack sand up my ass and take them to court, and I was to no longer come to the dealership for any service or warranty work.

Well hells bells, that is just what I was going to do. I went to a lawyer, and he gave me the low down. To summarize..I was screwed and if I wanted to spend around 10K in fees for a 1400.00 turbo...have at it.

It would be easy for Toyota to say "During installation of this unauthorized installation of the external transmission cooler, the fluid was take your pick{contaminated/not at the right level/overfilled/not installed correctly} and now you have to prove it was installed properly. Are you ASE Certified? Would I still do it? Hell yes. I'm sure the WS fluid can handle 300*, but I'm not going to test that theory out. I have a no go on my Allison 1000 before I pull over and cool down. That number is 240*.

Now days aftermarket parts are a slippery slope. I signed a document when purchasing my GMC Duramax. It stated that any/all aftermarket power adders/tuners will void the drive train warranty in total. Only thing I have done aftermarket is a FASS lift pump, a better fuel filter system (CAT 2 micron), and a banks ram air intake system. I have 1 more year on my warranty (5 year/100K) and after that, probably will add a Banks Derringer/and methanol kit.

That definitely put it in perspective. So if you decide to add the cooler the best thing to do is to remove it if you need warranty work done on the transmission. I could have mine out in less than 30 min and no one would be the wiser.

Pretty much. This is why I have done not ECM tuning to my diesel, and probably will not. Most likely a water/methanol kit used with some brains. I have seen people lock up motors with meth kits.

I've been lurking and following this issue since I found out last year my 2019 didn't have the kind of cooler I expected. FWIW, I don't recall anyone on here having mentioned this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t73jM6mT8sU After giving a history of what's publicly known about WS fluid, about 31 minutes in, he states that he doesn't believe it's the same fluid now as it was when introduced. So perhaps these temps we are seeing would have been a no-go in 2007 but are OK now due, in part, to improvement of the fluid?

Doesn't GM leave a "water mark" on the ecu if you run a tune?
