Yep. I have seen a few transmissions fail before 100k with no reason.

Call a couple local transmission shops (if you have time). It would be interesting to hear the cost you get.

Thatd work, except when you are on vacation thousands of miles from home pulling your rv and the transmission goes out (possibly). Then you’ll have a tow to the dealer and sit and wait for the repair which could take days to get the parts in.

If you’re worried about trans temp you have 2 options. 1. Add a cooler. Whether you do it yourself or you pay the dealership or another shop/mechanic to install it. 2. You can trade it for a truck that does have an aux cooler for the transmission. If you think Toyota is going to issue a tsb or something similar so they pay to install a cooler, the only way that happens is if there are a rash of transmission failures that are directly attributable to high temps. I don’t think this is likely. At all. I know there are some individuals who have had the high temp warning and they’re upset. I get it. Fact is though that every automobile model by every manufacturer has a number of owners who have transmission problems. It happens to every manufacturer whether there is an aux trans cooler or not. I plan to just keep driving the shit out of my truck and tow whatever I need to. If I have a transmission failure because of high temps, this will be the last Toyota truck I buy. I have no idea what I will buy instead. I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. Now it’s time to start drinking beer. Carry on.

Well then you wouldn’t need that 10 yr/125k mi extended warranty like in the post I quoted would you?

But adding a cooler can void the warranty...isn't that what someone on this thread mentioned? No free transmission from Toyota?

Not to mention the 4.6’s haven’t had the cooler in a long time and their trans didn’t blow up. You know someone owns one of those without the cooler and has hauled/towed god only knows what without ever having a problem

What's the towing capacity of a 4.6 vs 5.7? What size trailers are guys with 4.6s towing?

Looks like around 6500 pounds. But there are always those people who believe if the truck can pull it then they can tow it lol

I called a few transmission shops in my area. I wanted a 2012 Tundra 4x4 transmission rebuilt and replaced, factory specs.

5200/5470/5100 were the quotes plus tax (my area, another 430.00). If the trans cooler was plugged or lines needed flushed, additional costs would be added.
Any aftermarket or stronger clutch packs would be additional, and that could be as much as 6800.00 plus tax.

All these places have a 3 year, unlimited mile warranty.

Damn, these Aisan transmissions are not cheap.

I haven't been here for long but I miss the "Tundra gas mileage sucks" threads. Because Tundra gas mileage does suck. Can't even get 38 gallons of gas in the tank. We should sue.

It could be worse. They could have already updated the Tundra and fucked up the power train like they did with the Taco.

I didn't buy a Tundra because it got good gas mileage. I bought a Tundra because the first time I put my head underneath one I realized how much more stout it was compared to any domestic half ton out there. Taking out the cooler I think was a bad move and it kind of goes against the whole Toyota vision for the 2nd gen. Tundra (because let's face it, 3rd gen. Tundras are 2nd gen. Tundras with new skin). The truck has been advertised as being absurdly over-built from day one. That's why we pay a premium for them and that's why they last a million miles.

The "eco-friendly" V8's can keep their active fuel management and cylinder deactivation. I'll take the Toyota 5.7 that runs smoother than a sewing machine all the time, every time.

You seriously want to go there? I think they redesigned the tank. One section is now higher than the other to fix this. I have 34 usable gallons in my 2019.

I called Toyota corporate to complain about my AC making a clunking sound when it turns on after a few days sitting in 100+ degree weather and also asking if adding the transmission cooler would void my warranty. All I got on the transmission cooler was we don't recommend it and it could void you warranty, so I feel like it was a waste of time to call unless I actually have proof of an issue.

The reason they give you that answer is because they don't recommend modifying the truck in anyway, and any mod can cause them to deny a warranty claim IF they can reasonably prove the mod caused the problem. It is really the only answer they can give and still be legally covered.

My 2010 did the same thing with the A/C compressor for years. Never had an issue.

Noticed my 2019 did it the other day and thought to myself, "Hm. At least I know that noise is normal with these trucks now."

I think it has to do with the torque load the A/C compressor puts on the belt system that causes the fan clutch to lock up momentarily and that is what I'm actually hearing is the fan going full jet engine mode for a split second and then freewheeling again.

Here's my temps on my 2019 with the retrofitted trans cooler . City driving stop and go . On the highway it's under 180 degrees due to more air flow to the cooler . IMG_20200818_161322.jpg IMG_20200818_161315.jpg

I got 36.5 in mine Sunday. But I also went 45 miles after the truck said zero miles to empty.
