Wow, this is a timely thread.

Heard a weird noise coming from the blower motor 2 days ago. Pulled the A/C filter yesterday and found this:

    IMG_1423.jpg

So I opened the hood and found paw prints and some poop on the engine cover. Got a new filter last night and put rat poison on top of the engine cover. Came out this morning to find this RAT BASTARD dead right behind my driver front tire (the box is pure irony....Its what I had laying around from a sock delivery...LOL). Will get some rat bait feeders this weekend, and I'll put more poison on the cover...Damn things.

Hey fellers I ain't been around much but I had to dig up this old post cause fall is coming. I live in S-C Kansas we are still in the 90's up close to one hundred today. BUT! I be darned I was sitting in my Tundra the other evening listening to the stereo when I heard a mouse scratching around. Like a dummy I had left a roll of towels in the back. Dummy! But sure moth balls deter them and rat poison kills them but they are still going to get in the blower motor, and have little rat bastards and DIE! . So? How keep the little rat Bastards out!?? I opened the hood and started looking saw sure enough where they were -are getting in . He is already in the blower motor you can hear the out of balance spin. Anyway , found this check it out. Still gonna be the wiring problem but maybe this will keep them out of the cab. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6Idc4AInIw

You do realize that rat poison doesn't kill instantly. They crawl away and die somewhere, usually a spot where your household pet will find them. PLEASE don't use rat poison if you can help it. Treating dogs and cats for rat poison toxicity is no joke- It can be deadly. Old fashioned traps with peanut butter is the best IMO. They are effective and still exist because nobody has yet to invent a better mousetrap! Rat poison and glue traps have a tendency to unintentionally kill many other animals besides rodents. Just my 2 cents.

I have approximately 10 barn cats around the property. We do not have mice or rat problems. Actually I have never seen a wild rat in my life.

Sorry this is gonna get a little off topic. I can't keep cats around very well my dogs don't really bother them but the cats just don't stay. I think they get nervous, kind of like the chickens do at times. How can anyone feel sorry for a rat? Glue em, trap em, shoot em in the head! A PEST! My dogs won't have access to the inside of the cab but however I won't use poison in the truck. Just in holes in the outbuildings. And the worthless rat bastards are gonna crawl in the blower motor and die anyway. I pulled four out last winter but never one in the first week of Sept. I guess it my be the man made global warming infecting their brains. Rats are just like whitetail deer in my part of the country They are PESTS and they must DIE! They destroy vehicles eat crops but just give the libtards time and they will be on the endangered species list too. Like the grey wolf or the bears next it will be turkey buzzards. Wolves and coyotes kill baby calves they are predators they and they should be exterminated. I'm getting one of those C02 powered pest killers for rats squirells little pests. . Oh wait! C02>? And contribute to global warming!? I will try not to breathe so hard make up the difference in my exhaled air pollution. The idjuts around the country blow smoke up the media about some king of wildlife being endangered when the facts are if you look elsewhere than the giggle boys or Wik$hitideas and find the facts the caribou increased after the Alaskan pipeline. Increased! Just like black bears are increasing and on and on and on. I ain't saying we do not need environmentalism, we sure nuff do. But not Militant environmentalism like the Militants we see in the dimwit party right now. And I sure didn't men to get political, it just happens with me..... Getting too old and seen too many changes since the 1960's. This world ain't right and until we can do something to change human nature I say KILL THE RATS! Besides how much has mother nature changed over the years as in wildlife climate etc. it is a never ending process. Everybody freaking out cause we are on a warming trend bbut bet my butt we wil see another ice age before we burn up. And have to move everyone to Mars. What lunacy. !!!

I have used eucalyptus oil in the engine bay. You can even put it on rag and wipe other areas. Rodents hate the smell, so they just move on. They never even try to get to the truck. Hope it helps.

Years ago I started boiling mint then spraying around the engine bay, smells good don’t stick and mice hate it. Also, mice are like the mob, they like their backs against a wall..leave your hood open if you can..

LEER Cap (soon), Bedliner, Deck Rails, Steps, Special Michelins, Toyota Mats...
Please allow me to introduce myself...as this is my first post on this forum.

My history with Tundras is that my husband and I bought a new dark green 2000 model (with suicide doors) and it was his pride and joy. When he died in 2001, his second to last words after "I Love You" were "please take good care of my truck'..." :(

I loved the truck except for the fact it seemed a bit tipsy... it had a 7-year warranty on it. In September of 2008, the water pump burst and I had it towed to the nearby dealership. The tow driver put some water in it just to start it up and load it on the flat bed.

While that was being fixed, I saw a 2008 Silver SR5 with the off road suspension struts on the lot and fell in love with it. I still have a big house and need to haul lots of junk to the dump weekly so I thought, instead of replacing my 1999 Audi Quattro V8 4D/AWD (which doesn't yet have 100K on it) I would trade it the green Tundra for this new one. The green one got me a lot in trade since it only had 45K on it.. which is pretty good for being 8 years old. Even the tan seat material was clean and intact... it sold within a week.

The 2008 model has had a few recalls (pedal, window, radio, undercoating, etc) that were taken care of by the dealer. I had outfitted it with a nice plastic corrugated bed liner and Leer cap... and some of those WeatherTech floor liners. It's a nice clean 'girl truck' that has only been used for off roading in the north country a few times. The attendant at the car wash saw it and asked me if I did and I said I hadn't at that time, but was planning to. Even the old ladies at my Mom's retirement community complement me on what a pretty truck it is.

A few months ago, the truck went into 'limp' mode because the air intake, a part that is only used at startup and not required for it to run, only to satisfy the EPA mind you, failed and cost me $2,600 to replace. Toyota extended the warranty on this defective part to 10 years which I of course missed by around 9 months.... bah!

And now for my mouse damage story, er, or one of them...

The green Tundra sat in the driveway while I grieved and did not get much attention from me until one day, the check light did not go out. Seems that there was a hollow area in the middle of the engine where the check light wire dangles through and the mice, who took up residence in there, did not like it and chewed it. I forgot who directed me to an independent garage who took the engine apart and fixed it for $500... but I know the dealer did not do it.

And yes it is hard to keep leaves out of the engine compartment too.

This 2008 model has had its share of nests in the various compartments. I employ a pest company that does rodent mitigation for my attic and garage and there are various traps and poisons spread around outside hidden in rocks. (My cat is safe, he is an indoor cat) In addition, I had placed a mesh bag (you can buy small ones from Amazon - they are 5" x 7" and used to put small items in your dishwasher) full of moth balls in the corner near the window washer receptacle and that seemed to work all summer... But mothballs evaporate eventually and winter is coming and just within this last week, the check light/LO warning came on and I could hear a weird flapping noise when I turned on the AC or heat...

The little buggers had chewed the wiring harness for the knock sensor and made a nest under the intake manifold. The wiring was replaced and all the compartments were cleaned, new filters installed, and an AC refresh done. I replaced the moth balls and plan to add more, in addition, will wipe down areas with peppermint oil which is on order...

Now, here's the part that gets me. As I look at the bill, I see that the parts for all of this work came to around $140. But the labor, for around 4-5 hours work, came to $1000. which included the $325 they initially charge just to take things apart to find out the source of the check light being on.

How the heck much do mechanics get these days?

    Welcome to the forum.

They were charging book time for the repairs. This can work in your favor, or against you in a way. Book time for all this work was probably 8 hours, but was able to complete in 5 hours. Now at times, the same job might take 12 hours on a different vehicle, so the mechanic would eat the 4 hours.

The shop makes the money, not the mechanics. Great technicians can do quite well on repairs in volume when finishing jobs early against the book time.

I always tell people that complain about dealership costs a few things:

-Find an independent shop that specializes in Japanese vehicles.

-Buy the tools and do the work yourself.

I usually buy the tools and do it myself.

Yeah, the first garage that took apart the engine on the 2000 took a couple days and only charged $500. Hubs could have done this, he was an engineer. Me, I used to work on my 1957 DeSoto, but not this. :)

PS - In 2015 I looked into getting a new truck but did not like the grille design nor the boxed wheel wells. I love the 2008 rounded wells, and grille. It's the prettiest since. I also looked into a 2019-2020 model but you cannot get the off road strut package on an SR5... WTH is up with that?
