Might be a dumb question but wondering how everyone starts their 3rd gen tundras. When turning the key do u just crank it and let go or do you hold the turn till it starts up? I know this doesn’t work for oldeR cars even my 16 4runner but Just wondering how everyone does it. For me both methods work but not sure if its hurting the truck

I still let it sit on accessory for a second before firing it up since I grew up waiting on glow plugs for diesel trucks :anonymous:

Hit it, and quit it. That's how I do it. And when I get into other cars that don't have that option, I have to restart them.

This^^^^. A good solid turn, then release it.

When you turn the key to "Start" position, the starting process is initiated. The engine will crank until the engine starts, or the process is timed out. If the engine doesn't start for some reason, for example lack of fuel, the ECU will time out the start process after a specified time and the engine will quit cranking. You can try again.

Holding the key turned won't hurt anything until the ECU times out...then it may simply re-initiate the process. I don't know if that hurts anything or not, but it won't help start the engine if your fuel tank is empty or there are other problems. If the start process times out a couple of times, you can start looking for the reason the engine isn't starting.

My 2017 has always started so quickly, I have never noticed a continuation of cranking after the key was released, but I know that's what happens on modern vehicles.

quick turn and release, no need to hold it. On mine I just bump the key and the truck will turn over until it starts, no need to hold the key in the start position.

Bump the key on both my truck and my wife's 2013 Corolla (and the Sierras we have at work).

Push button on the Tundra. 08 4Runner has the crank hold feature as well. The 94 pickup, not so much, and usually results in an oh yeah moment and cranking it again.

Just a bump. Habit formed since my 2012 F150. Same boat with the rest, when getting in a vehicle that doesnt have it, I have to re crank.
