Good man. This is my attitude also, and I wish more humans on this f'n planet would behave the same FFS. It would be so much better of a place to live, feel much more like a global community if we did.

But to PHM's point, unless you've suffered through something once, the gesture doesn't mean as much. So I wouldn't expect too much love or appreciation out of anyone you're hooking up if they haven't been down the opposite road of perish at least once or twice in the past so they know how much appreciation is warranted.

When did they switch to the 2.5L? That's whats in our 2012 but it's the same 3rd generation. Do the 2.5's suffer from the same problem?

 

Some do. Not as bad. But we are seeing them come in burning oil bad. Mostly people sticking to the 10k interval on oil. And driving in town never highway

 

Makes sense. Ours hasn't started burning any oil but I've changed the oil religiously every 4-5K.

Whats your take on the best diy Coolant System Flush product?

The Toy stealer here uses BG and they put the truck on a machine. I’ve had them do this a long time ago on the truck with coolant and oil systems, but I’ll be DIY the TB Job and at the same time want to get the coolant system walls cleaned up prior to the fresh fluids and New Radiator going back on.

Anyone else with a recco please chime in. Thank you.

For rust, I’ve seen Thermocure as a high recco. Other options are available for removing oils/gunkies, but not sure about them. Seems like a messy part of the job.

 

Drain and fill. Drain the radiator, drain the 2 plugs on the engine block. That gets most out. Toyota coolant doesn’t need a flush flush unless it’s been mixed with other colors or engine replacement, etc

 

Good news on this. I’ve done the plug removals on both sides of the block on my last coolant job. Even did the heater coil flush out with a hose and poured new coolant in there before burping.

Goofy prior mechanic did put the ‘green’ coolant in 5 years ago which is why I switched back to Asian Red last year. I assume this is ok. Current System fluid looks good after a year of the Red. Recco flush or good to go?

 

You should be fine. Drain radiator and refill that to clean out some remnants of green if you really wanted. But probably not needed

 

Yeah. That got flushed out last year. I poured the red in with the plugs off and watched it run out. I’ll be changing the oil cooler hoses this time so all that section will be drained.

 

i know it's been discussed because i think i recently stumbled across it, BUT
can you fuck up not using specific coolant?
Had some Peak long life laying around and topped off a few weeks ago

 

Green is safe. Just not as long lasting. Orange is when you have issues

 

GM pickup I bought 5ish years ago was in hell shape, coolant was brown. This is what I ended up picking up. Ran three cycles with this stuff. By the end of the 3rd cycle everything was clear.

That said, I hadn't used it prior. It did work well. Was a tedious 3 hour process to finish, roughly an hour per cycle.

is a flush in order?

 

You might as well. It can only help at this point. Make sure you drain those plugs that were mentioned earlier.

i have ungodly arm length / reach but not sure about the muscle part any more.
Will get to it all

 

Get the Zerex Asian Red from Wallace Wurrld. Cheap and meets all Japanese Specs.

Flush that Heater Core and blow it out with Borneo Blow Dart Technique. Then fill it up with the Asian and reconnect. Proceed to fill the radiator and let some run out of the valve at the bottom to wash the crud out. Any hoses you can open and run some new through makes for cleaner job.

Button it all up and burp it. Find a steep driveway and let her run. Top off the rez to the high line when hot and that is your new bench mark check line. Should never move when engine is hot. If it does you have a leak. Cold engine and the line will show lower until it heats up and expands up to your top line.

 

I love the directions given around these parts for DIY stuff. gives me a lol about everyday.

 

How hard is it to remove the clear lens from the instrument cluster?

I think I'm turning into PHM with all this 303 I've been using lately.

The dust under the trip reset button is bothering me.

 

I read about some guy who polished all his scratches off of the lens. Its been a few years since reading about it. I think the process is tricky, but you can do it. Might be able to blast some compressed air in the hole and disperse the dust instead of removing.

 

It's not hard. Just have to remove guage cluster and then it is simple.

I have heard of people replacing it.

 

You ever see this have oil leak/seep? Anyone and/or @empty_lord

Wondering if the figure 8 gasket should be replaced while ‘in there’ doing TB?
