2019 Tundra 1794 4x4 with TRD off road and OEM Michelin pro tire package. Very disappointed. Took the truck out to do some mild off roading - mostly gravel and rutted logging roads with some sandy spots and short inclines. Shredded 2 of the tires!! This was a 2 out of 5 in terms of technical difficulty and in fact we were passed by an Escalade with low profile tires!! Shame on Toyota for building a capable truck but not equipping it properly. Have owned the truck for year and it has only 9K miles. Performed admirably in 3 snow storms but for the first time in 12 months of ownership my son and I decided to try it on the back roads of near Boca Reservoir in Northern CA. ALSO - the jack that comes with the truck is a toy at best with a very small base that is very unstable. If you plan to do even mild off roading - get rid of these tires and buy a proper jack to carry!

Did you air down? it does amazing even with those crappy tires, I have since upgraded tires but yea airing down does wonders. The stock jack has done well for me the 7 years I’ve owned my truck, it’s mostly stock so it works for me. I understand if you are lifted more than maybe 3” you would need another jack but I’m cheap and I make things that I have available work and it has worked.

Michelin LTX M/S and A/T are excellent tires, probably the best available, but you have to understand the intended use they are designed for. If you plan to go beyond the lowest level of off-road difficulty, you are encouraged to consider different tires that are designed for the task. Knowing how to drive off-road is another factor...

Well now, lets not throw the baby out with the dirty water. Maybe just low profile tires would work better?

Thanks. I think I'll just swap out the passenger tires pretending to be off road tires. Shame Toyota doesn't offer that upgrade as an option or at least warn you that these tires are just to get you over Costco speed bumps nothing more.

I had a different experience with these tires. At 12k miles I drove my heavily loaded down (near max payload) 5500 miles round trip to Utah and back.

In UT I spent a good amount of time on dirt roads. By your description of the terrain you were on that shredded your tires, the terrain I was on was a few times more aggressive. Maybe yours came out of a bad batch of tires.

Sounds like you didn’t air down. Those tires don’t have much tread depth but they do fine if you aren’t plowing ruts in deep mud. Air them down and they will take you most anywhere you want to go, but a proper off-road tire will do a much better job of it. Driving ability also helps a good bit.

I did not air down since the road wasn't that bad. I'll have to look into the technique and how/when to use. Clearly these are more for highway use even though paired with an off road package. I would have thought they'd be good up to moderate use. Switching over to BFG AT K02's.

Excellent vid but note the relatively smooth surfaces and compact dirt. Northern CA off roads are a lot more rough, decomposing granite, sand, crushed shale and a lot of gravel/larger rocks. I was impressed with the climbing and overall mechanical, but again the tires are probably not the heaviest selection for more of what we experience here for off roading vs this video. I wasn't doing anything nearly as aggressive as the climbing shown here. I just want to be able to get to my favorite fishing spots on old logging roads and trails. Nothing crazy.

do yourself (and us) a favor and get proper tires and gear before you go off-road again.

That video is only a snippet of an episode taking a stock Tundra in different terrains. Since, airing down is an option, I suggest purchasing an air compressor suitable for off roading. You don't want the Escalade passing you by a second time around because you couldn't back on pavement.;)

I'll trade you the Bridgestone Alenzas on mine for the Michelins  Though I do prefer the Michelin Defenders.
