Hi - I’m looking at a 2020 Tundra crew cab and I have a question regarding the suspension and ride difference between models.

I test drove a Platinum as that was the only truck the dealer had in stock. I’m interested in an SR5 the dealer will be receiving next week, which comes with the off road package with the Bilstein shocks.

The ride in the Platinum truck was great - almost more car like than truck like. Can anybody provide any feedback on the off road ride? Is it very similar to the stock ride or are there big differences? The dealer said I probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.....but what else would they say!

For reference I really enjoyed the trucks I’ve driven that feel more car like (Tundra and current gen Ram 1500). I have not not enjoyed the ones that feel more truck like (F150 and Tacoma).

Thanks for any insight anyone can provide.

Test drove a limited non TRD, bought a SR5 TRD Sport. Drive/feel the same.

Edit: thinking back now I think all Limited do come with TRD off road package. Ride was still the same. Sorry for the confusion.

I tested drove just past Friday 2020 Limited with off-road package and felt the off-road a lot more bouncy for my taste in comparison to standard Limited version

I had the same opinion. I opted for the 1794 without the TRD OR package. That said, the TRD OR I drove was a double cab rather than Crewmax. Less weight over the rear axle could have contributed to the bounce.

Hm, I thought it was a split decision but it sounds like there is a difference. I’ll have to take the SR5 around the block to try and get a feel for it.

I guess if I hate it I’ll just lease it ;)

I currently on a quest searching for a new Tundra that can ride as comfortable as lexus gx460 for "on road" driving to replace my gx460. 1794 and Limited (without off road) came close to the ride of gx460. I was trying to get dealer in Houston to swap 20" wheels from Limited/1794 for 18" ones on SR5 as i was told 18" will ride smoother than 20". So far, the 2 dealers in Houston would not do that. Strange that dealers don't want to swap as 20" wheels supposed to be more costly than 18".

Lol. If you can get the 20" wheels to Chicago I'll swap my 18" wheels for them!

The stock Platinum suspension (black shocks) were too floaty for me, I swapped them out for Bilstein 6112/5160 around 2k miles. The TRD OR Tundra's I've rode in were 07-13, and they rode firmer than the black shocks. I did notice my 2014 & 2016 rode much more floaty compared to the 2010 and 2011 after Toyota "re-tuned the shock valving" with the 2014 refresh

So in case this helps anyone in the future...I largely agree with everyone here. The SR5 with the off-road package and Bilstein shocks does feel softer or a bit more like floating down the road than the base Platinum I drove.

Personally I think I liked the Platinum better, but the off road isn’t bad. I drove over a few sets of rough train tracks at about 35mph and the Tundra ate them up.
