Are you losing air? If not, then it might be salvageable. Usually the tire store won’t repair it if it’s too close to the sidewall and leaking air for safety and liability reasons.

I would say yes, unless it’s actually in the sidewall or very corner of the tread I think anything further than 1” away from the edge of the tire would be repairable especially that small. Just make sure they put a plug patch in it wherever you take it.

It’s pretty close. If it penetrated at the angle that it is on the outside, I think you will be ok.

No air loss. Everything seems fine. Just noticed while I was filling up on fuel.

Cool. There's one a few miles from my house. Hopefully they aren't too busy tomorrow.

Where’d u buy the tires from? Walmart pulled a pretty nasty screw from on of my old tires, and patched/plugged for like $10

I wouldn’t trust Walmart. My daily was previously taken to Walmart for some tire work or something from the previous owner. I was doing the brakes and noticed that the lugs were over torqued (Excess > 120 lb/ft) when manual states 80 lb/ft. I had to re-torque each wheel and replaced some of the lugs cause they severely stripped the lugs from using an impact gun.

It looks like it might be going in there at enough of an angle that it didn’t actually even penetrate to the inside of the tire, if you take it in they might not even have to patch it if it doesn’t leak when they pull it out, I’d have them try that first wherever you take it but I’d agree with @Brandisher to not bring it to Walmart. I’d go to Discount if there’s one close by.

Absolutely repairable, pull it out squirt with soap and water to see if it’s actually leaking. If it is get a plug kit. Ream it, coat the plug with a lot of glue and cut the ends when it dries. Let the air out first.

Easily repairable. Tire shop may decline as it’s in the outer tread block. Too close to the sidewall by their standards. Stop by the parts store and get your own plug kit.

Do NOT plug the tire. Have it dismounted, inspected, and repaired using a patch plug. THAT is the only acceptable repair per industry guidelines. Plug a tire? Say goodbye to any warranty that tire had from the manufacturer. Tire separates and takes out your fender? Causes an accident? It’s all on you....

But, again, going with industry guidelines, this tire is not repairable

Nothing wrong with plugging a tire. A shop will likely not patch that since it's on the outside tread block.

If I've got the choice of a $5 plug or a $200 tire I'll do the plug every time. Hell my local dealer still plugs tires.

I've got a Safety Seal kit that's been used for probably 15 repairs and the only one that's ever failed was a UTV tire that took 2 plugs.

Totally agree with 5.00 plug kit, easy simple very reliable. Have done dozens of plugs , just be sure to glue up good and get full penetration.

That's what's nice about the Safety Seal kit, no glue, and the tool has a built in stop.

Looks repairable but the inside of your tires between the tread looks weather checked/cracking. Sidewalls look nice so maybe no need for concern.

I'd plug that without thinking twice.

It probably didn't even penetrate the tire if it's not leaking.

Update: Shop just pulled it out and checked for air leakage. Fortunately the nail penetrated at an angle towards the center of the tire. Ill keep an eye out for air leakage.

So question for everyone saying plug it versus a patch on the the inside of the tire (if leaking air). Is there any time when you would say to patch instead of plug?

I ask because I seem to be routinely at 85-90 mph for long periods of time 6-8 hours in MT. Had been told a patch was the way to go.

If the plug came out or it still leaks I'd have it patched. It's just a matter of taking the time to have it patched vs. 10 minutes with a plug kit in the driveway.

Seems like nowadays you have to go to a privately owned tire shop to get tires repaired. Chain stores only want to sell tires.

If your in a pinch, a plug kit will work fine. If you have the time to get the tire repaired with a patch ,go with the patch. I’ve even double plugged tires and drove on them for a long time, all what you feel comfortable with.
