Folks, i need some help, i have a new to me 2017 Tundra Crewmax Limited and i bought it about a month ago and it came from the dealership with this clear paint protectant. I have washed it several times now and around the edges of the clear paint protectant it looks dirty and i cannot get it clean. What would you folks recommend, i dont like the look of it being dirty for sure. The one coming across the front of the hood is not as noticeable but the others around the doors and door handles are very visible.

    Thanks

I would suggest peeling it off and thoroughly cleaning under it and make sure none of that dirt or gunk has eaten into the paint. You can reapply after you decontaminate under the current stuff or just leave it off.

that looks like years of build up so will be very difficult to restore where you can't see it. if you haven't tried, see if you can get in the lines with say a hard bristle toothbrush and some good cleaner but some of those spots have obviously made it under the adhesive and prob won't come out.

if it were me, i'd probably look at removing it then doing like a paint correction and ceramic treatment. under the door handle may be tricky. maybe a hair dryer, heat gun or hot day to help peel it off. there's probably some good youtube diy videos too. 3M eraser wheels seems to work well for people. i'd be nervous to do it myself and get the results i want so prob have a detailer handle it.

Here is a link by a shop that applies clear bra. They suggest using steam and a specific direction of pull:

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BYH5emgD3ec

That doesn’t look like factory applied clear bra to me.

If it were me, I’d remove any that is holding dirt or moisture, and any that just doesn’t look good, or looks like it is failing.

Not a fan of that stuff. Always ends up looking bad after a few years and then it is a mess to try and removed and fix.

I am SO GLAD I didn't get this when I bought my truck! I got a full ceramic coating instead, aftermarket.

My girl had this on her white Taco, after less than a year if was gross and pealing off. It almost took her having to stand on the stealership's service manager's desk to get them to replace. Apparently they aren't covered under warranty which makes sense too, but I agree they look like garbage and get bad pretty quick. I have them on my brand new tundra (<3k miles) and the one on the door frame is already starting to peel off... Wonder if there is anything else on the market we could use instead because I like the extra protection just not practical after only a few months. I'll be peeling mine off soon.

What's that run, just out of curiosity... Will have to look around my area for a place that does it.

They are a dealer add-on item, which is why they don’t really get them warrantied. I have them on my 17 Crewmax and they look fine for now but I’m sure I’ll have to peel them off at some point. They do much better at protecting the paint than a ceramic coating, but if dirt gets under them you’re kinda screwed and have to replace them. I actually like them in the door handles because it keeps that area from getting scratched all to hell. When I sold my Tacoma, that handle pocket looked like it had been sandblasted.

I forgot how much just the ceramic was. I got high quality ceramic tint on all windows, ceramic coating all around, and a ceramic coating on the windshield all for $1500. I think the paint ceramic all around was about $900 of that total.

Yeah, when I asked about it pre-purchase, I was asked how long I planned to keep the truck. When I said "until it dies", they said don't get it. They said it is only good for 2-3 years max before it either starts to yellow or gets dirt in around the edges. The yellowing is much more visible on white and lighter trucks. Ceramic does not protect as well from rocks but it doesn't discolor or mar the paint either.

folks, just curious, what does a Ceramic coating in your area run price wise? i live in a smaller town, about 60,000 folks but i'm limited on who does ceramic coatings here, i think only 1 person in town does it and i'm looking at their website now and its telling me this, this is in Hattiesburg, MS by the way.

The place I got mine from offered three different levels of protection. I think the prices were around $400, $600, and $1000 if that was all you got. He had panels from cars with all three, with various types of "abuse" so you could see the difference in protection. His 2yo Tacoma had the highest level on it and it looked amazing. I got the highest level but got a discount due to getting other services done in the same visit.

    This is in Mobile, AL.

I took mine back to the dealer and they replaced it under warranty. The service manager said that there is a life-time warranty on it so if I need to bring it back once a year to get replaced they would do it.

My entire hood is covered with this stuff and was damaged prior to taking delivery.
The salesman wrote a "we owe" slip to repair it... but I dont want to leave the truck with them for god knows how long to repair it.

The bug deflector apparently was not installed properly and it broke during our test drive...
While flapping against the hood going down the highway it boogered-up the clear film, but paint looks fine.

Maybe I can just peel the clear stuff off altogether ?

I dont like, nor do I want the bug deflector on the hood, but I also dont want the damaged clear film left as is either.

If you decide to use that place let me know how it turns out. I'm in Meridian and there's a couple guys here that supposedly do ceramic but I know nothing about them. Might have to make the drive to the 'Burg.

Also looks like there's a Ceramic Pro shop in Hattiesburg. They have a FB page.

i was not aware of the Ceramic Shop but a friend of mine has used Ardys Auto Shop here and they speak highly of them but again they arent cheap. Yes, if i decide to use them i will for sure let you know. My friend has had many cars/trucks done with them and also their boat and they are very impressed with them.

Goo Be Goon for automotive, let the goo do the work don't be afraid to use a-lot, in other words keep it wet the "glue." The longer you let the goo do the work the easier the glue comes off. 15min depending on temp, and humid. Use a "clean" No fabric softener, smooth cotton fabric rag. Try a small spot first.

I watched the video and noticed something that concerns me. See all the marks still on the paint? Did the wheel and/or the GooGone create those? The paint is so dirty in the early part of the video it's hard to tell. See my screenshot below:

Goo Gone won't mess up your paint. Like mentioned....apply it to the area in question with a microfiber cloth. Dab it on generously and wait several minutes. Wipe off. If residue still present.....repeat. We use it at work to remove old calibration sticker residue too. For years. Harmless.

I used it to remove 6 year old bed side TRD sticker residue. Paint looks good as new. Can't stand those TRD stickers. A bitch to get off after 6 years.ha

Wow you really enlarged that to prove a point..:eek2:

Looks like remnants of the adhesive or dust.
Your pixelated pic it is hard to tell..
The orange peel of the paint looks pretty crappy too.
He made a quick video, not an epic detailed how to do it.

I used one to remove my TSS decal (the day I bought the truck) and reside from my badge removal (2 days after I bought the truck).
Also used it to remove my hood protector (like in the OP) and other vehicles to remove dealer decals when detailing.
Paint looks as smooth as new...YMMV

I have found hand sanitizer to be an amazing (and safe) cleaner- second to none for tree pitch. You might try it on the adhesive residue before getting all “elbow grease” about it.

My wife got the ceramic treatment on her last black Pilot. That vehicle DRANK touch-up paint.

I use Klasse acrylic now and love it. Mine is due for another coat, but it really does a good job of protecting and bringing out the shine, and lasts well over a year in my experience.

Mine is a 2016 and it had this exact problem. I started off with a heat gun on low. DO NOT DO THIS! It melted very easily. I switched to a hair dryer on high working small sections at a time and it peeled off clean except where rock chips damaged it. A microfiber rag and some goo gone took care of this. Biggest advice I can give is work slow and in small sections. I also removed the door handles to get to the pieces under them easier.

"2 or 3 years max" they must use some really cheap ppf. Sold my wife's 14 Camry (red) with full front end protection and the film still looked perfect after almost 7 years other than one little tear in the front end film from a pretty good size stone. Tore the film a little but did not scratch the paint. Just had it put on my 2020 Crewmax and love the thought of (hopefully) no rock chips.

Make sure and flush the panel with plenty of water after using it and I wouldn't apply it to a hot panel or it might damage the paint. I spray it directly on the microfiber so overspray doesn't get all over the truck
