    Hey all,

I searched for a while and haven't found anything that addresses what I am asking specifically. If anyone knows where I can find it please fill me in!

Just wondering if it is possible to install the black textured SR Bumper Covers over the chrome ones that came stock on my truck. I can get all 4 for very cheap so I can avoid buying cheap unpainted non-oem replacements all around for $400 and paint/line-x them. Everything points to powder coating, wrapping or plasti-dipping the chrome which I don't want to do especially since I have some damage to the drivers rear and passenger front.

Thats looks great! I did end up reading somewhere that since I live in the salt belt, the salt could pretty easily destroy the chrome covers underneath.

I guess I may have to go the route of getting cheap knockoff metal ones or get them powder coated.

I think some people here have had decent luck wrapping the chrome but I'm not too sure how they will hold up. I drive highway 80% and off-road 20% so I'm curious at the durability of the vinyl. I could do it myself and save some cash too. It can't be that difficult.

I hope someone with that experience could chime in.

Yeah, if you live where salt is an issue you won't want to put a cover over the chrome, that just invites rust. Many have said the powder coat doesn't always last over the chrome. You could always raptor line or use another bed liner on them, many have done that and it holds up. With the vinyl wrap, if you are concerned about durability could you just have the clear protective film applied over the vinyl?

Maybe bed-lining the ends is the way to go? I wonder if you would need to prep the chrome in order for it to stick well so it lasts. I'm sure all said and done the bed-lining won't be much more expensive than the vinyl wrap and supplies needed to do it. Wrapping will probably take more time though.

Hopefully someone has experience with this!

Didn't think of adding a second layer of protective wrap. I'm not sure how difficult or easy that would be.

You definitely have to etch the chrome first but Upol (the company that makes Raptor liner) has an etch to work with their system.

@BlueRibbon4x4 can you chime in since I know you raptor lined your chrome bumper ends.

Ok. That's what I thought. Is the raptor liner spray on only? I have no way of spraying-on any type of liner. Best I could do is by roller or brush but I'm sure that wouldn't look nearly as good. I guess next question is what do you need to spray the raptor liner?

Edit:. I just saw a kit with a sprayer on Amazon for $140. That's not bad at all.

They have some roll on liner but unsure how well that would hold up. All you need is an air compressor, they recommend a large (20 gallon) but some have said they have gotten by using smaller ones you just have to plan how you spray so you have enough pressure in the tank. Once mixed you are on a time limit before the stuff hardens.

    Hope that helps

    Thanks @RobertD

All I have is a small 5 gallon compressor for a nailer. I hope that will be enough to do it. I would plan on doing one cap at a time to make sure I don't run out of air. Might be difficult if I have to mix it in batches.

Any idea what that would go for? If it's more than $150 I might just stick with the diy raptor liner. I need to do the folded part of the fender thats peppered by chips on all 4 corners with raptor liner so I can finally stop filling in the individual chips too.

So where were you going to get the SR covers for cheap?
I need a couple of those myself.
    Thanks

You can get the SR bumper ends for like $80 bucks a corner on rockauto.com. I was going to go that route to de chrome my bumper but I may just get new bumpers. Still not sure yet.Screenshot_20200805-133445_Chrome.jpg

Thanks, the OP said he had some crazy cheap price for them so I am wondering if it is better than this.

My rear bumper seems like some sort of magnet for morons in the parking lots or something and I was able to yank the drivers side out to almost correct gappage but now the cover is pretty scuffed still and is driving me a little crazy!

I never seen the SR ends taken apart before, are there covers that go over the metal part too?? I was just going to replace the chrome with the SR ends and put a flat clear coat over them.....

I didn't think of checking rock auto. That's pretty good. Someone in my buddies family has a towing/junkyard business and said he had 2 tundras in there (unfortunately). I could probably get all 4 if they're in good shape for about $200 depending on condition.

The Raptor liner spray works great. I used an 8 gallon compressor. You do mix the liner in small batches. It comes in small bottles that you mix the hardener into.
I used plastidip over the chrome for adhesion. Then Raptor lined over it. I’ve had it over two years, and I offroad very often. It’s one of my favorite mods. 71E78BA5-088A-432A-A570-75F8E3D47576.jpg

@BlueRibbon4x4 That came out really well! I'm surprised that Plastidip was a good prep for the chrome before spraying the raptor liner. I figured the chrome would need to be sanded/scuffed or some sort of etching primer would be applied for the raptor liner to bond well.

Looks like you don't need to worry about salt since you're in the desert. I wonder how the Plastidip prep method would hold up to road salt.

I’m not sure about road salt, really. It may do damage on the bottom sharp edges of the cap where the metal is exposed. If you were to Raptor, I would just thoroughly sand the chrome and use self etching primer. I was worried about it flaking off the chrome, but as long as you prep it correctly, you should be ok. It definitely will flake if you damage the cap. But you can always respray it!

That's what I thought. I guess that's probably the way to go. I ended up ordering the etching primer that UPOL makes anyway so I'm glad about that. I guess I will give it a shot and see how it goes.

I need to find a new chrome drivers side rear bumper cover because mine is badly dented.

I have bumpershellz covers, very happy with it!

Not much concern for potential rust underneath, if it starts to happen.. then it will be time to upgrade to another bumper.

@biebs96 looks great! Very clean. I need to check these out a little more. If needed I guess I could Plastidip the chrome before applying the shellz. That would probably stop my worries. Glad to see that there are some nice diy options rather than spending $500+ on painted caps from a dealer or elsewhere.

@Kojack looks great man! I haven't looked into bumpers at all because I'm sure I'll have to change out coil springs and make other adjustments. I'm sure they cost at least $500-600 too.

After the lift I put on, new wheels and tires and other things, my wallet is pretty sad haha.

Well I decided to try out the raptor liner. I'm gonna do the fenders where all the rock chips are as we all know. That way when I get my icon rebounds I'll res a little easier.
