I thought I was the only one, I actually took mine back to the dealership because I thought my new JBL system was defective, IT WAS NOT, THIS IS WHAT I PAID SO MUCH MONEY FOR??!!!!!! Toyota and JBL should be ashamed of this “premium” sound system in the 2020 pro. ITS A TRAVESTY, now I’m going to have to spend more money to correct this. There should be a class action lawsuit against Toyota and JBL for even thinking about putting this crap in an expensive Truck and calling it “premium”. ANYWAY, I’m on the search for options, so far ********* came up along with JAMES from TECH12Volts, good luck. Let me know what you come up with also.

 

I did just about the same thing, it seems that after 2013 Toyota decided to change vendors that produced head units, from what I have gathered. Just after discovering Tundras.com someone posted a new head unit made by Phoenix Automotive and it had a 30 money back guarentee so I took a gamble on it and just the improvement in sound with the stock speakers was night and day. What I have now for sound system is the second gen Phoenix fast boot with buttons along with a single sub from JAMES (wish I had gotten two) and am still using stock speakers that will eventually be upgraded with JAMES. I belive any HU will make the stock JBL system come alive and have said it before that if someone (with the right electrical degree)wanted to make a butt ton of money, they would find a way simple way to increase the faint signal from the stock HU. Just my 02 cents, good luck on your venture.

 

The biggest issue is the amp; I wish there was a super simple option - from what I've heard, James @james@tech12volts his a great system made just for this. The hard thing with the 2020's (which from what I understand, James has taken care of), is that all of your Toyota Connected Services are reliant upon the head unit - if you change out the head unit, you lose your ability to start/lock/unlock/track via the app. Also, you can't just replace the amp from what I was told. What I did was got a new amp, and two 10s and ran the new amp in tandem with the old one. In hindsight, I wish I would have gone with James' system from what I've heard about it.

I know this is a long shot but I got questions about what HU you went with. I'm looking at a 10.1 universal but I wanna retain everything I have currently. Do you mind if I message you?

 

For the record for anyone just starting to plan their system not a single sentence of this paragraph is true.

1. Replacing the AMP is super simple and all you have to do is just replace it +/- a DSR depending on HU.
2. Toyota Connected Services has nothing to do with the HU and all functionality continues to work after replacing the HU.

Well, that’s good to know - but I’d want someone else to try it out before I do. Since I got my 2020 in November 2019, I’m sure I was given a lot of misinformation. I was told by Toyota, and several car audio shops that they hadn’t found a way to preserve the Toyota Connected Services if the head unit was changed out. I actually had a couple try to replace my head unit to test it out since it was a whole new system on the 2020s, and each time I would lose my Remote Connect.

So if someone has found a way to swap out the head unit, and still preserve that functionality - I’m all about it, cause I’d love to swap out my head unit.

 

I yanked out my head unit from my 2020. What a POS. No real adjustments, weak power output, and horrible volume control.

KENWOOD DMX1037S HU and had full functionality of locking/unlocking/starting the truck through the app while my subscription was active. I did not renew it but still have the ability to remote start with the key fob which was the only thing I cared about as far as functionality.

 

Well, you could have been clearer by saying you had done it - that's all that I asked.

 

The plot thickens...the service absolutely worked fine after changing the HU (the functionality of the telematics/service is independent of the HU) BUT if you ever have to use the activation code again I believe that gets put into the OEM HU and obviously you need the OEM HU. I'm not sure if Toyota Services can activate the service on the backend - the literature says if the dealership does the activation you do not need an activation code. As I said, all I use is the remote start with the key fob and according to Toyota depending on the sound system that will continue to work for 3 or 10 years without the subscription.

 

There's also a possibility that Toyota had blocked functionality with third party head units originally, and fixed it with a software update - the same way a lot of us lost key fob remote start when our trial period ended on remote connect. I can't possibly see how multiple independent car audio shops would install a new head unit in my truck to see if I kept the functionality, and then when it didn't work would remove it and not charge me a cent. What would they be gaining from that? It would actually be in their best interest to get it to work, that way they could sell me a new head unit. So while it may seem obvious to you now that all of those things work with a new head unit, there's a chance that it didn't work originally.

 

Not sure but my subscription ran out 3 months ago and I use my remote start on the key fob everyday - including today. I confirmed that none of my subscriptions are active. I change my HU in October of 2020 and used the App and Applewatch to remote start the truck up until the last day of the subscription.

 

If you have a Platinum, as stated in your signature - you have Destination Connect active free for 10 years, and with that active the key fob will work. There are multiple threads of people that had issues with it, and a lot of us talked to Toyota that acknowledged the issue, and sent out a fix a few months ago.

 

The discussion starts about halfway down page three here (https://www.tundras.com/threads/2020-remote-start.62927/page-3) about a lot of us losing the ability to start the truck with the key fob, Toyota acknowledging the issue, and eventually - Toyota resolving the issue.

 

So that's the key fob. I'm still confused why the app didn't work when you changed the HU? Did you have an active subscription? As I said above, the issue I see is to activate the service they send you an activation code by email that needs to be put into the OEM HU. Obviously, since my subscription was active when I changed the HU in Oct 2020 the remote services continued to work I never had to deal with activation. The question is if I wanted to activate the service now could Toyota do it from the backend/could the dealership do it since I have nowhere to use the activation code? Somewhere it said an activation code was not needed if the service was activated by your Preferred Service dealership.

 

Not sure, I activated mine in November 2019, and started experimenting with head units in December 2019. Since mine was one of the first 2020s, I had a lot of companies that wanted to test their head units out in my truck since the Toyota Connected Services was a new thing on the 2020s. It was a real mess, and I while I knew what I was signing up for by letting my truck be a guinea pig - I kind of wish I would have waited. The most common issue I had was losing my Remote Connect when the head unit was replaced. The other issue I kept experiencing was the stock head unit wouldn't work correctly with an aftermarket amp, because I was trying to keep my Remote Connect, I was trying to see if we could just improve the system by replacing the amp, and speakers - but it was like there was some kind of check the head unit did with the amp, and if it wasn't the stock amp - it wouldn't work. So after a bunch of experimentation, we finally figured a workaround where we added a second amp, and had that amp power the doors, and sub, and then kept the original amp, and had it power the dash speakers, and have the factory head unit, and factory amp connected directly. For some reason, we were never able to get all four door speakers to work, I had to choose only either the front, or the rear - so I chose the front.

I legitimately think Toyota addressed all of this is one of its updates, so had I waited - I could have easily built a great system by replacing the head unit and amp.
