Does anyone know if there are still known issues with the brake controller or if there's an update? I tow a dual axle pressure washer trailer that weighs approximately 3500lbs. I have to turn the gain all the way up to 9.5 for it to seem like it's actually slowing the trailer down and I can't get it to lock the brakes up either. Any information would be appreciated.

try messing with the settings for the type of trailer brakes in the center instrument cluster. Be sure to set it to electric brakes under 4999 lbs .

Yeah I've done that as well. Had it set for over 4999nsince the trailer is 7000lb gross. So you're telling me to set it for under 4999lbs?

That's the current approximate weight now but capable of carrying 7000lbs

yeah id set up the truck to what you are actually (currently) towing for weight . Gross weight means nothing for that setting in the instrument cluster

I've had no issues on mine towing a 5.5K TT. Skids the TT tires on gravel.

Are you sure the problem is not with the trailer brakes?

I adjusted them once already. This is coming from a brand new trailer. It's only 2 months old.

If it's only two months old it's a trailer issue. It takes a while for the shoes to seat into the drums. When I bought my new TT I couldn't get the brakes to lock up either. After long trip in the mountains and lots of use they are very aggressive now

Had my dealer update the firmware to resolve a continuous "trailer disconnected" that only happened with one of my two trailers.

    It works very well now.

I just had mine updated last Tuesday and I still cannot lock up the wheels and it still feels the same. It’s scary to haul the trailer in heavy traffic when I have to rely on the Tundra brakes. Mine never shows disconnected. I just don’t feel the brakes working when I step on the brakes. I have to use the slider every time. Even with the gain set to 10 it won’t lock up the wheels.

Today I checked the current on the trailer brake line and noticed something interesting. Upon initial depression of the brake pedal the current draw is about 6.5 amps for appx. .5 second then it drops to around 1.5 amps. With the gain set to 10 and the slider held full on it shows appx. 6.5 amps. Apparently I need to see a higher current setting like somewhere around 10 amps continuous?
Can anyone confirm if the IBC has an accelerometer built into it? That would make sense why initially it shows 6.5 then drops to 1.5 since the truck isn’t moving. Anyone ever check how much current their single axle trailer draws?

Some of you spoke of setting up the weights and etc from the console. I haven’t seen that option. How do I get to it? I looked through the menu but couldn’t see anything about setting up the trailer weight.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks..
    Don.

You want to test for voltage not amps. Best to use a incandescent test light to guage performance. Use the brake override lever (helper) and watch the test light and see if it's as bright as when connected to the vehicle. Follow the link for more help. https://www.etrailer.com/question-53547.html

In the menu for the brake controller there is a choice of of trailer weight under 5K and over 5K.

Do you knew for sure that the problem isn't the trailer brakes? Can you use a different vehicle and test the trailer brakes?

    Thanks for the reply.

I traded in my 03 tundra for this 17. The 03 had an aftermarket controller in it and it worked as it should with the same trailer. I just added electric brakes to the second axle today due to the brakes don’t work well with the ‘17. Haven’t tried the drive test with the second brake set yet.
Now with the second set of brakes wired in the current has doubled but only when using the slider. When stepping on the brake pedal it’s not showing any change. This is while the vehicle is parked. That’s why I’m curious if there is an accelerometer in the controller that sense movement. That might be normal but I can’t find any info On it. I’ll check with the volt meter tomorrow.

I can’t seem to find the menu for the trailer weight. I just checked and all I see is for electric Manual gain and electric over hydraulic. Nothing about trailer weight. Is there something I’m missing?

    Thanks again,

    Don

There is an accelerometer but when you use the emergency slider it's bypassed. Your right that the amps would double because you have less resistance with the extra loads (magnet). The brake control wire varies the voltage to the magnet to achieve variable braking. If full voltage is applied trailer brakes would be full on. That's why using a test light on the truck side is a good was to visually see the voltage increase as the slider is moved.

There is definitely a choice between trailer weight in the menu. Also there is a gain control as well. I'll take a picture tomorrow if you can find it.

I just saw an article on etrailer.com that discusses how the controller works. It’s exactly as I thought. They do use accelerometers and will not show output when the brake pedal is depressed unless the vehicle is moving.
Thanks for the Etrailer link. There’s a lot of good info there. I’ll check the voltage levels tomorrow. I just took the wire nut off of the Ground connection in the junction box on the trailer and it looks bad. Corrosion and not a good connection. I’ll fix that first then check.

Thanks.. I’m wondering if a ‘17 has different firmware or hardware than your 2020 that doesn’t show that option?

Did you look threw the menu when the trailer was connected? You right the ground side is just as important as the positive side and corrosion will effect the brake performance. Most braking issue are trailer related.

I’m not sure I’m in the correct menu. I only have a selection for electric/manual gain and electric over hydraulic. Then of course the + and - to adjust the gain. I don’t see a selection for weight.

I'll check my truck tomorrow and post a pic but I can't recall if it's the same as the 2020. My father inlaw has a '18 but it's out of town for a few days.

If you want to test the brakes independent from the truck connect the truck and trailer but leave the 7way disconnected. Pull the emergency braking pin out and see if you can pull the trailer forward. This will give the full 12Vs to the trailer brakes.

I just checked the manual and it doesn’t have any reference to a trailer weight setting when setting up the trailer brakes.
That’s a good idea regarding the emergency braking pin. I would like to see what firmware was installed both before and after the update Tuesday. I doubt my obd2 reader will tell me that. The dealer didn’t note it on the service receipt.

So I checked the voltage this morning after soldering up the three ground wires that were in bad shape. I’m only getting 10.4 volts to the trailer junction box. Where the trailer cable and plug to the vehicle ties in to the trailer wiring. I reseated the connector on the back of the IBC and no difference.
This is gonna be a fun one to find out why there isn’t 12 volts back there with full deflection of the slider and gain set to 10. If I can get to it next I’ll check to see what the voltage is going into the IBC.

Ok, next I rigged up a tester using a 12v bulb with clip leads and went directly to the socket on the truck. The - and the brake pins are clean and connected there. From that I connected a volt meter. Now with full throw on the slider and gain set to 10 I show 11.55 to 11.6 volts. I did check the voltage into the IBC and it is showing 12.5 volts.
All that said, I lose 1 volt from the IBC to the trailer connector on the truck. Then I lose appx 1.1 volts from the truck connector to the trailer junction box. Resulting in 10.4 volts at the front of the trailer. The connector on the trailer is looking dirty and worn. I may replace it to see what happens.

I have the same issue with my 2020 Tundra. I have a new trailer I got 5 months ago. 5x12 tandem axle with brakes. I haul my pressure washer setup around. Weighs approximately 4000lbs. The IBC doesn't work for crap. I have it turned all the way up to 10. The only time I can actually feel it works a little is when I'm at a stop and I manually slide the controller you can feel it drag and stop it. I know for a fact it's not helping me on the road. I know there's been issues before with the IBC so I just ordered the Tekonsha P3 with harness and adapter plate. I'm ripping the stock garbage out. I don't have time to fool around with something that doesn't function as it should.

Have you tried pulling the trailer with a different truck and see how the trailer brakes work? Whatever you do don't go ripping stuff out. It's not that simple. There are data lines and modules like to talk to each other. Removing components will throw all kinds of U codes. Does your trailer have a emergency disconnect pin? If you remove the pin it will send 12V directly to the trailer brakes. With the truck connected try to move the trailer and see if the trailer brakes are on.

Honestly... it shouldn't be this complicated.
Brake controllers have been around forever... and the P3 is by far the best there is.
If Toyota can't make the factory controller worth a crap, then I wouldn't waste any time ripping it out and replacing it with a P3.

I already ordered a P3 mounting plate in anticipation of trouble with the OEM unit. Fortunately I already have a P3 I pulled from my Tacoma.

I'm interested in seeing how you guys wire-up the P3 to the factory harness.

Removing the factory brake controller to install after market is straight forward. You initially get a code for no ci trolker present and all you have to do is disconnect the battery and reconnect and the brake controller screen is no longer present.
