Great pics!! I pretty much grew up in a canoe. Our family never went to Disneyland, instead we spent time canoeing and in the outdoors. We did the Bowron Lakes chain twice and the Broken Islands chain once. Both are still great memories for me. I also learned to fish in a canoe.

I kind of want to buy a canoe someday and take The Woman on a multi day trip.

Awesome rig! Is your canoe wrapped with fiberglass? I figured that would save the need to reseal. But maybe your canoe gets heavy use! Im planning to build our own cedar strip canoe within the next year. I absolutely love wooden canoes and kayaks theyre just pieces of art and labours of love.

Yes, fibreglass inside and out, which provides the strength and protects the wood. The fibreglass gets scratched from use (my canoe isn't a garage queen), and sanding and varnishing every two years fills in the scratches and restores the beauty. The varnish also adds UV protection which can break down fibreglass. I use a quality marine spar varnish called epifanes, which isn't cheap.

Wood canoes are gorgeous, but their upkeep and maintenance are constant if you want to keep them looking nice.

No hail here recently but lots of rain showers and threatening thunderheads, though only a few have only actually started the light and drum show.

We're heading out fishing tomorrow. The barometer is on the rise and it hasn't been stupid hot so I'm hopeful for a productive day.

Awesome good to know. I havent owned a wood canoe, and the people i know who have them use them sparingly. I figured there would be upkeep just wasnt aware how much.

You shouldn't be afraid to use your future wood strip canoe. Yes, they take a LOT of work and time to build, therefore some people may see the time investment they put into their canoes, and be scared to use them properly. My Dad built this one 16 years ago, it took him a summer, and he used it to go fishing. It would come on and off the rack on his JEEP, get dragged down to the lake, and have fishing equipment lying in the bottom. He put a ton of scratches into the fibreglass by the time I got it. When he passed it on to me, myself not being a fisherman but a paddler, I started using it as a canoe, taking it mostly on day paddles. It came with us to Banff and I made a point of taking it up to Lake Louise, and other lakes around Jasper and Saskatchewan. Next month it's going to go on a 4-day canoe-packing trip down the Manigotogan, a white-water river in Eastern Manitoba. I won't take it down any rapids, because unlike a Royalex or plastic canoe, a rock could severely damage the hull, i.e. punch a hole through, but that's the same of any other fibreglass canoe. So, we'll be portaging it around most of the rapids, save for maybe the occasional class 1 that looks clean. But still, we're going to pack it full of camping equipment, drag it up to the campsites and over the portages. I.E. use it as a canoe is meant to be used. And then next year it will be due for some maintenance. I"ll sand it, varnish it, and it will look almost like new again.

Right? 30 degrees....kill me now. I was going to go scouting for hunting season but I honestly don't want to do anything in this heat.

Main Street is pedestrian only but everywhere is packed with Albertans. In my 40+ years in Alberta I have never seen so much pressure on local parks.

We had a massive thunder and lightning storm last night. Roughly 2 full hours of nearly continuous lightning flashes and rolling thunder. It was absolutely incredible. We actually got out of bed at 1am to go for a drive out of town to sit and watch it. The lightning was mostly up in the clouds, so we wouldn't see indivdual bolts too often, but the sky was constantly flashing and lighting up the clouds.

Screen cap of one bolt from a vid The Woman posted on faceplant:

I was guilty of growing out a quarantine beard myself. Let it grow out the longest i ever have, 2.5 months my guess. My wife went from absolutely loving it, to we couldnt touch because the beard scruff might get her unintentionally. See ya beard it was nice!

On that note though, Go habs Go!
