Removed my backseat today and started working on fitting the fridge slide. I'm basically going to do what this guy did.

I started looking around my garage of this house we're renting to see if I inherited any scrap wood. It turns out I did.

I figured Jesus won't mind as long as I put it to good use..

I pushed the button! 4HI blinked greenish yellow, went solid, and engaged. I got brave and pushed the 4LO button. It blinked orange, never went solid, and the wheels were "skippy". I'm at a loss as for how to describe it. Could be that I have no clue when the appropriate time to push 4LO would be, but I got button-happy.

4LO you have to be stopped, in neutral or park? to engage. If you were on dry pavement and turning the "skipping" is normal. I usually drive a couple miles a month at 60ish mph in a straight line in 4HI.

Drove 8 hours today to get my truck tuned. I'll be picking up my 4wd bits in the morning.

My air/fuel stuff was super messed up and the guy worked on it for a hot minute. 117°F in Tempe AZ today. Good Dyno weather.
I gained about 20 torque and 10hp, but I just wanted her to run right since I melted my last set of plugs.

These VVTi engines are pretty nice. 270 HP and 311 TQ at the wheels after all has been said and done.

Yeah, I've got the UniChip. The guy disconnected everything to do a stock run and it made the figures that were in the yellow. I've got shorty headers, a cat back, and a K&N CAI with an AEM dryflow filter in it instead. Not bad for making 280 or something at the crank while stock.

Tim at Xact Dyno was a really good guy and he took his time to make sure all was good. I drove a good amount to get to him. I'd love to run a supercharger, but that's a rabbit hole I'm not ready for yet.

Hey @AgitatedGopher, first, know you didn't necessarily do anything wrong. Second, generally speaking, newbie rule of thumb: Only use 4HI and 4LO when you're on non-paved surfaces with one exception: 4HI can be used on paved surfaces in slippery conditions or, or on dry paved surfaces for short distances as long as you're not making meaningful turns, i.e. it's really only OK to drive on dry paved surfaces if you're driving in a straight line.

Here's why: 4HI and 4LO are 4WD modes which lock all four wheels, making them all spin in sync. Thing is, when you make a turn, as you see with the wagon wheels this video starting at 2:22, the wheel to the outside of your turn needs to turn faster than the wheel to the inside of the turn, which needs to turn slower.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYAw79386WI#t=2m22s

Therefore, if you have any 4WD mode engaged, LO or HI, and all 4 wheels are doing what they should by spinning at exactly the same rotational speed, what happens? One wheel is forced to skip and jump to catch up while the other needs to skid or buckle to slow itself down unless the ground underneath it is slippery or loose, allowing those wheels to freely skip or skid.

Explaining this point so someone new to 4WD understands can be challenging and it could be the reason why you were told the 4WD isn't working. If you're not offroading or you're not hauling or doing other things which would demand engaging 4WD, you can probably get by with 2WD ("2HI") no problem.

To keep things lubed up, Toyota does recommend to engage 4HI for 10 miles per month. With kids, I'm not doing as much offroad, so I usually end up doing this while I'm on the interstate on straightaways. You can shift in/out of 4HI as long as you're driving below 62MPH, so doing this on the interstate is totally possible.

I seriously doubt you will ever use 4LO with on-road driving. If you remember anything, think of the "LO" in "4LO" as "low speed". That's not really what it means, but you don't want to be in 4LO unless you're crawling off-road OR you're totally stuck. and need to ensure all 4 wheels are spinning and can't skip or skid.

Fester nailed it also - read this excerpt from the owner's manual to understand how to shift into 4LO:

Oh, and I could be wrong here but I'm pretty sure traction control is auto-enabled on our 1st gen 4WD trucks when they're in 2WD mode, and traction control kicks itself OFF when you switch to any 4WD mode, whether HI or LO. So, in all reality, 2WD with traction control will provide you with a reasonable amount of safety. I know a lot of guys who prefer using 4HI over 2WD w/traction control when driving ice and snow at speed. I won't debate the merits, we don't deal with adverse weather down here enough. I used 4HI to drive on the interstate during Atlanta's "Snowmageddon" to get my wife to her obgyn appointment for kid #2. There's a time and a place for it.

It would be interesting to go back to a straight section of road, at a stop sign, tap 4HI, not 4LO, then roll forward at 5-10 mph to see if the wheels are skippy when driving in a straight line at low speed. If not, it's possible 4WD, at least in 4HI, is fine. If it is skippy, I would probably avoid using any 4WD mode, maybe you were told the truth and 4WD isn't necessarily working. Could be someone did something crazy, like trying to do a 3-point turn on a paved road while in 4LO carrying a load.

First off, thank you for your responses.

In processing all of it, I went down a rabbit hole investigating the meaning of 4LO. And I'm left with a question. Does 4LO imply a lower gear ratio? I read that it delivers more torque, and should be used to get out of a sticky spot, rather than through it. And 4HI will get me through tough conditions, provided conditions are amenable.

I'm still slogging through reading how 2 differentials work together nicely, and I've realized how my knowledge of AWD and 4WD is severely lacking.

Also, this beast has been abused prior to me, so I'm assuming the worst about it's history. But, since it has fallen into my possession at during a time of crisis, I have vowed to get it back into tip-top shape. I've adopted a metal puppy, and I'm gonna nurse it back to health. Hell or high water.

Yes, 4LO is a physical gear ratio change. that's what the transfer case does.

I will vouch for the 4HI during snow / ice on the roads. In 4HI my truck tracks straight and true down the road. In 2HI the rear end gets all wiggly and the steering wheel seems like a non functional handrest. I thought the roads were better than they really were one day and took it out of 4HI during the tail end of a snow melt here in Arkansas and hit a slick patch on a bridge going about 40mph. Did 2-3 360 degree spins and ran hitch first into the retaining wall that keeps you from driving into the Arkansas river 100 ft or so below. Almost zero damage to the truck, other than the hitch bent inward and down about 2 inches and the cab on the passenegr side made contact with the bed. I always keep my 2" hitch ball in the receiver for this very reason! I always keep it in 4HI now when driving in the slick stuff and keep my speed below 45mph regardless of how much traction I think I have. All the 4WD in the world won't help you on ice if there's no available traction. But it behaves way better in 4HI than not. I usually tell people that 4WD may not keep me out of the ditch when there's snow / ice, but it will help get me out!

On the Fly 4Hi is super nice! Push the button and good to go.

4Lo engagement needs one to be in 4Hi in stopped position in Neutral. Push 4Lo button (lights up) and then shift gears from N into Drive. Feel that sweet torque squat.

Filled her up today. Checked the oil level. Pulled all the Relay Fuses out and inspected and polished the prongs. Put a dab of dielectric grease on the tips and reinserted.

These things have never been pulled before and they were tight! The prongs looked good and shiny. No burnt or corrosive finish upon inspection.

FYI the Starter Relay needs that little tab pushed over while simultaneously pulling it. Kinda tricky because all the others are a wiggle/pull out straight type.

Did some tow/haul and lots of short trips with A/C running and a good amount of idle 11.5mpg. Not bad considering.

Looking for some audio help. I’m a complete noob at wiring and trying to install my Alpine ILX-W650 with a steering wheel control unit. I have JBL and have set up the long wiring harness for all the speakers. I’m left with the ground, ACC and yellow battery cable on the alpine harness and the small harness from the bypass kit. I’m assuming I attach these wires on the small harness and attach them to the red black and yellow from the alpine harness.
    D786E404-7766-4CC1-922D-1A946BA4D291.jpg

Also with the PAC steering wheel control it says to use three wires. White, red and black. Notes say to connect back to pin 6, white to pin 7 and a 150 ohm resistor to 8 and white. Is this correct? Thanks for any help, I’m lost on wiring, but trying to learn.

All good info above. And yep, like I mentioned over here after your original: You're right, 4WD and turning on non-slippery surfaces can lead to binding, so in my opinion, the general "safe" rule of thumb is: If driving on slippery surfaces at any speed, 4HI is OK any day. If stuck, 4LO is the way to go.

If you want to go further down the rabbit hole, it's easy to miss replies in this thread, if you didn't check out the links in this reply, it could present some other tidbits you'll find useful.

But anyway, Where you are right know with what you know is about 2x or 3x more than the average person understands. I was a 2WD/manual driver most of my earlier life, but I've been thoroughly enjoying 4WD and went down a similar rabbit hole as you have to fully understand the what/where/when/how/why of it all.

I haven't gotten heavy into the mechanical aspects of it because I'm not into rebuilding things with lots of gears, but I don't think it's overly important to have such an intimate of knowledge to use it properly and enjoy it.

Only other thing I'd add is Toyota wants you to use 4HI as a middle-shift point between 2HI and 4LO. When in 2WD, stop and shift into neutral, engage 4HI fully, then go into 4LO next. Likewise when coming out, stop and shift into neutral, then into 4HI fully, then into 2WD. More details in the image I attached to my previous post above.

I think when I put my rear bumper back on, I might have put these in the wrong spots. If someone has pictures of the rear inner bumper supports Id appreciate it.

Pictures might seem weird as I took them with the front facing camera so they might look reversed.

I couldn't remember how mine went back on. Hell, I wasn't even sure they weren't upside down. I think I faced the "outside" of support towards each corresponding tail light. So the left support would "face" the left light.

This is the right (passengers) side support, and this is the only picture I have. NG. Pretty sure this is how I did it. Yours looks correct. Notice the two square holes by "top" bolt in your photos, and the two empty square holes on mine by top bolt? Looks like you have a winner.
