Door check problems

I have a 2000 tundra and the driver side door check will not hold it open anymore. So the door will shut if i am on a slight incline. I have looked for the part and it seems that they don't make an aftermarket only a $80 oem. Anyone else have this issue and solution. Thanks

 

I feel your pain. I tried and was able to find a used one at a junkyard but it wasn't that good. Finally got fed up with my rear doors not staying half or all the way open and bought two new OEM ones for $80/piece. Sucks but I'm much happier putting my kids in the back now.

 

Been tinkering on the 02’ today and read this which prompted me to look at my ‘door check’. They were not fully engaging like when new. I took my 10mm socket and tighten up the 2 screws on the hinge side of door above and below the ‘check’. They were slightly loose at all 4 doors. Tightened them a 1/4 turn and the doors (all 4) have better tension now! Not like new, but close enough.

Also, as a heads up, you can tighten that one 10mm on the handle side door jambs to correct a rattling window (when opened).

 

Bringing this one up from the dead.

Has anyone found a better solution? I went up camping this weekend and it was pretty annoying having both doors trying to close on me when I am in the cab. They are so bad that it doesn't even take them being on an incline and they want to shut on their own.

 

I think it's OEM only. Someone took one apart to see if it was serviceable, but it wasn't. PHM is more versed on that than me though.

 

That's what I was afraid of.... There is a local toyota salvage yard that I might be able to pick through.

 

Yep, me too.
Getting the groceries out of the back seat is a challenge when the door closes faster than you can get in.
Seems like the back doors are worse then the fronts for some reason.

 

I guess I haven't paid that close of attention to the rear doors but the front ones close so fast now, don't know if I can get the rears open in time

 

haha! i feel your pain. My rear left door only takes nothing for it to close. my daughter gets so annoyed cuz it closes on her. Cleaning my truck out is always so annoying with that too. Im at the point of buying a new one.

 

@theblurry1 replaced his with new ones and sent me his old ones to experiment with. I took them apart per a youtuber guy instructional, but these Toy ones are not as serviceable as the youtubes. I’m not one the give up so I tried a few angles, but then decided it is not worth the effort to half ass them. Figured I’ll buy new ones (MAYBE) down the road some day. They are like $83 each! Wwoooooweeee!!!

The door panel needs removal, as well, so these will probably never get replaced because I am done with that pulling those off ever again unless absolutely necessary.

 

Kind of where I'm at, $83 a whack?! Ouch.

 

Also, don't go through the trouble of replacing these door checks with more used ones. I thought I was saving all this money on my driver's rear but it's only marginally better. Wish I had gone new!

 

Well the good news is the rear ones seem to be just fine (at least for my standards) bad news is, they are still $80 each lol.

Recently purchased the door check repair kit, https://www.ebay.com/itm/293549708759. The kit came from Russia and took about three weeks to arrive. I will be installing the kit with in the next few days. scrolling down on the Ebay page will show the instructions for repairing the door checks. One kit will repair all 4 doors.
Got the door checks installed today. A fairly simple job. I used the included shims when reassembling and now the doors are really tight to open or close. Most likely the door checks will loosen up a little over time. If they don't I will still be quite happy with the checks. No more of having the door closing on me while trying to get something out of the truck.

 

Love to see if these work out well for you. Need to repair mine.

 

the first gen tundras FB page there was a guy who said 06 Camry door checks were 17 doll hairs a piece and worked like a charm for him, I'll be ordering a set now and updating with results.

I just ordered a set as well. A guy on the FGT FB group used the same set and said they work well. I have been meaning to replace mine and if these work, I’ll be happy as hell for $28.

 

I replaced the rear door checks in my double cab because I was worried about the kids getting in. Replaced with OEM checks, maybe a years worth of use and they are already garbage; I just anticipate the kankle crunch now

I ended up ordering a set of these. They were only $12/ea and if they work, I will be happy. If they don't, I will return them.

Are they a different design or just cheaper?

 

They are for a camry lol. I snapped some pics of mine and did some comparing. They look identical so fingers crossed they work. I don't mind being the beta tester. Mine are so bad now, they close by themselves... on level ground lol.

 

Same here with OE rear checks…….. 1 years old

 

received mine from ole Jeff B yesterday, but was also trying to figure out why the trusty (until now) lawn mower is quitting out on me, I'll try to install them this afternoon if the boss doesn't give me the stink eye for keeping a half mowed lawn

Yep. Super disappointed. But if the carolla ones work for cheaper for only a year, still a win haha

I went back and looked at my install post, September of 2019

 

They come in today and I should be able to put them on this weekend. I will keep everyone posted.
