Yeah I've read it a few times and I'm still lost. Maybe saying we only know 1/5th of what happened...?

I know this. Pinay was the only one that seemed to pay any attention to us 1st Gen losers and she was always extremely quick to help us get something sticky'd. I don't really care what sort of moderator drama went down behind the scenes and it's not my business but she will be missed.

I like the Ambers, too. At one point I really wanted those clear front corner turn signal assys, but glad I stuck with the Ambers. I selected new Amber St. Bart matching license plates to complete the look. Badass!

 

There's a solution to that. 1st gen owner moderator.

Help with improving brakes?...

Went out for the first time on some dirt (reddington pass for anyone nearby) to try out the new suspension. Wow, what a nice difference. I didn't even air down and I could just floor it. Well, I was flogging it (sheriff randomly driving out there was frantically waving his arms for me to slow down ) and what was quite poor in terms of performance were the brakes. I just put on new rotors and pads, stock equivalents. (I think). I didn't change the brake fluid and the lines look to be stock. The calipers are the 13 wl. On descents, which involve switchbacks, I was getting brake fade and really did not have a lot of confidence after some time. The road is very dusty. Once I hit pavement again, I swear I might have seen some smoke coming off the front, but maybe it was dust.
What is the next step?

You want better brakes while not upgrading calipers? EBC rotors with green pads or Akebono pads.

 

The calipers are the 13 wl, not 13 we. Ugh. I think I messed up by going cheap on the rotors and pads. They are more than adequate for the road, quite good really but on dirt, they leave a lot to be desired.
Maybe I should start with SS lines and a fluid flush as that should only help. I really don't want to bin the brand new rotors and pads I just put on. Might have to live with it and take it easy on descent in the dirt.

 

All I see is a lot of unnecessary flexing in the reflection. And some tailgate marks that would probably buff out.

Someone needs to learn how to not park like a douche tho. Someone in my neighborhood has one from similar era in black. It's an older couple who are on fixed income. It's not quite in that condition physically, but I suspect it's been well taken care of. Always smile when I see it go by. I enjoyed the old box styling of cars and trucks. I used to really love the Honda CVCC also, they need to bring that one back.

There you go. I'd also pick bmf for this, but as someone who's moderated at more forums than I have fingers, I realize it can be a lot of work and it's something you need to have your head in day-in-day-out unless you have backup.

No clue what happened with the drama (don't care!) but I know what a PITA it can be to get service on car forums when you're in a subforum for make/models which are just-as-cool or cooler, but less popular with the general population, so I'm sad to hear we lost someone who filled that void.

 

New brake fluid might help a little. I've done new fluid and SS brake lines and it didn't make much of a difference. Make sure your rear drums are properly adjusted which actually helped me more. But honestly, these trucks just have shitty brakes unless you upgrade. Several people have gone to GX460 pads and rotors with really positive feedback. You have to modify the calipers though. I'm doing the GX460 upgrade this year.

 

Thanks. I haven't adjusted the rear and I read about how it is done but I didn't see how you know that you have adjusted that bolt/nut piece to be in the correct zone. It seems people are adjusting the nut to move the bolt upwards and then maybe just going for a test run. Sorry for the jumble language. Funny how when you are learning something new you dont even have the words to describe the things you are talking about...

 

Any recommendations on upgrade from factory front bump stops? I'm not finding much for info / compatibility on first gens.

 

I'm only aware of two options.

1)wheelers. They don't make them for 1st gens so you have to buy them for 2nd gens but they screw right in.
2)DuroBump-they are not listed on their website but @Swalters is running them and can tell you more.

Looks like the yellow stuff EBC pads alone cost as much as my rotors and pads! If money is a proxy for performance, there is a lot I could gain going to these pads.

It sounds like what you are describing is the parking brake cable adjustment. Rear brake adjustment is at the star adjuster between the brake shoes, under the brake drum. There is a slot in the backing plate where you use a brake adjuster (flat screwdriver also works) to turn/rotate the star adjuster to spread the shoes and reduce the gap between the shoes and the drum. If there is too much of a gap your stopping ability is reduced and adjusting them will be a significant improvement.
Safely jack up the rear wheels off the ground, put the transmission in neutral and adjust the rear brakes while rotating the wheel until they just slightly drag on the drums. You'll usually hear when this happens, you'll definitely feel it. Don't make it so tight that it is difficult to turn the wheel. If you do, the adjustment can be backed off with the use of another screwdriver, but hopefully you wont need to.

You can also use the method in the vid below to get your shoes adjusted. This method should prevent over tightening.

 

OEM are $60. I've had really good luck with centric semi metallic and they are only $25. I'v read that ceramic don't have as much "bite" so I'd stick with the semi metallic, they create more dust and eat rotors faster, but our rotors are cheap and easy to replace so I'd much rather have the better braking performance.

After the lift did you install the rear proportioning valve extender thing? Also makes a huge difference.
