When looking at MF towels, do you get different GSM for the different types of jobs? Glass, compound, polishes, sealants, waxes, buffing, misc? I was looking at The Rag Company, they have 70/30 blends, 365, 420, 500, 550 etc. Not sure if you need specific types for specific jobs. Think I primarily use edgeless 500gsm for everything, is that bad?

This is an interesting question, and has spawned some debate. The higher the GSM, the softer the towel. Soft towels are great for delicate jobs, like waterless and rinseless washes, but, to me, too soft for things like wax/sealant/polish removal. For the thankless jobs in detailing, like wheel cleaning, door jamb cleaning, and general interior cleaning, I have some 80/20 300 GSM Rag Company towels. For wax/sealant/polish removal, I use the Griots Garage Wax Removal towels. Unsure of the GSM, but they have been the best for this job.

For the record, The Rag Company is an excellent source for your microfiber needs. Give them a call and I'm sure they will have recommendations

Appreciate the info! I just wasn't sure if there was a happy medium towel or if I need 5 different types each for individual jobs. If I could limit to say 2-3 types, one for glass/chrome, polishes/waxes/sealants and one for delicate super soft clear coats, waterless that would be ideal

This is the first vehicle I've had in 25 years that I even care to wash by hand. I usually go through the drive through or the token carwash. Now with my first ever new truck I care. I've spent a few hours at university of YouTube learning modern automotive detail. After researching the foam guns and different soaps and waxes I bought well reviewed basics. With the towels I bought a multi pack for the different blends (colors). What I learned with this was they all work the same. And they didn't make it through my laundry. They came out of the wash with leaves and burrs attached. I guess I am a filthy animal but WTH! I was hoping for more than one use. Next time I'm going the cheap route, big bundle of yellow or orange microfiber towels. Just my 2 cents.

I have this issue with some towels but my griots pmf towel always come out of the wash perfect. This is why I keep my dirty job rags separate from my delicate work towels.

Costco microfibre for everything for me. My wax came with a Blk, so I have dedicated that one for wax. All the yellow Costco ones are for everything else

Ask yourself....did Grandpa buy 12 different towels for 12 different jobs?

Nope, but I can 100% say his truck didn't look anything close to as good as mine does

Probably because he drove the crap out of it and didn't care what it looked like as long as it drove fine ;)

Different time and though process between generations. He wasn't researching towels and waxes on forums and taking pics of his mirror finish, he was using his truck to do truck stuff. I'm guilty of all of these things myself.

Forums can be be good and bad for this. On one hand they let us make informed decisions on important aspects of our truck or any hobby. On the other hand they make us obsess and compare with others and make us want things we don't need or never even knew about it will ever use.

Grandpa never spent 50k on a truck. He was a tobacco farmer in the hills of Tennessee so his truck was used until it was done then pushed down the hill to RIP

    Yep!

I was talking to Sal Zaino at https://www.zainostore.com/mm5/merchant.mvc

He has a blond towel and a white towel. I asked him what the difference was. HE said, the white had more "bite" and was great at wax removal.
The yellow was softer and great for detail spray.

I purchased them...Darn, they are great. So I now have 3 "go to" specialty towel. White to remove, yellow to shine and To dry: Griot's Garage PFM 25x30 towel

Before I joined this site, I would have thought you guys were crazy.
