Go Fast Camper........anyone have one?

Patiently waiting for my build. Received an email yesterday build start date moved up from March 2021 to December 2020

 

Yeah that would suck. Glad I waited to order my GFC till I got my 2020.

 

I got a notification on March 16th that it was in production and it was completed on June 5th.

 

Watched one of the pages on instagram that I follow take a dremel and grind out the honeycomb to make their's fit on a 2020. Brave souls hah

 

How long is the turn around time? And are you able to make payments while you wait for the build to begin?

 

About a year wait. You have to put $500 down to wait in line. When they are ready to assemble your unit, it will take approximately 3 months to finalize. It has to paid in full at the start of the 3 months. There is no guaranteed date due to supply/machining demands, but they let you know how its coming along in its build stages. The unit then gets the QC checks, and you set up a time slot (they only have certain days they do installs ) for it to be installed or they deliver, but thats a further wait, as they put a bunch on a flatbed trailer and ride around the country dropping them off to everybody. So yeah, you can save for 9 months and wait, then blow it all at once.

-with all that is happening, the wait times may be less. You’d think they could ramp up production w/ppl looking for jobs and I bet there are a lot of cancels-

 

@BenInILM my build is 733 I think we discussed the 2020 fin on GFC forum. In regards to build I started 4-21 and most of builds beside mine in my group are complete. My build however has continued to see delays which first was COVID, then it was related to fitting of the new frame, then I received a call in May said they were going to give me the DC frame they built for GFCs 2020 Tundra. This was due to the delays on mine but in reality I have still been in Assembly for a month. I contacted GFC, they said my panels were damaged in Assembly. Told last week I would be moving to sealing soon. In the meantime more campers are being completed beyond my build. My thought was I would be picking it up next week originally but now I really have no clue. I like there eagerness and response time, I expected some delays with being the first 2020 frame but the continued issues and delays are worrisome. I’ll post up mine when I pick it up

 

Here are my build dates for my GFC, #668:
03/16/20- In production
04/20/20- Components produced
05/08/20- In assembly
06/05/20- Curing almost finished, awaiting soft goods
06/08/20- Curing Complete
06/08/20- GFC Finished

It was weird getting 2 emails in a day saying curing was done and then the camper was finished, but I wasn't complaining!

 

I was kind’ve an early adopter (#200) for my Tacoma.



Absolutely loved everything about it. Price was less back then and I ended up waiting for only about 8 months.

Pros: it really is fast to setup; the engineering and build quality is superb; the Simplistic design checks all the boxes (cabana mode, etc)

Cons:
- price, although if you were to price out an RTT and bed rack, the price comes pretty close. Also, a vagabond provides more, but is way more expensive after you add all the options.
- Size, the sleeping platform can only fit two adults comfortably. Any littles or dogs and it gets cramped fast. Lastly, the condensation got bad without a fan (I had gen 2 fabric).
- Still evolving: the product is still relatively new so tweaks are still being made based on early adopter feedback.

TLDR; yes, I had one and enjoyed it. Ended up selling it cause my family outgrew it and ended up with positive equity with the quick sale.

@pnw.tundra and @rattail00 what days can You do installs. Also how long does the install process take?

If you could recommend one thing that is a must have owning a a GFC, what would it be fan, lights, storage bags, mattress, etc...? Thanks

 

I have a hard enough time trying to get out of a tent to pee...doesn't Coleman make something like this for way cheaper...I can't even grasp the pricing

 

I had a GFC on my old Tacoma. It was really a great platform, but you need to be honest with yourself when you choose your setup.

I thought that the wife and I wouldn't mind having to remove bed panels to get in and out of the sleeping portion and that not being able to store our bedding wouldn't be an issue. It slowly wore on us and it got annoying. And with two people and two dogs it got pretty small.

I never had a single issue with it and it was built very well, but it's more suited for a single person, or very short weekend trips in my opinion.

Our new tundra is getting an AT Overland camper, and vagabond makes a nice camper also if you can handle the wait times. They both beat the GFC in terms of space and being able to access the truck bed without moving the sleeping platform.

If a quick weekend trip with just you, or a single companion is what you are doing, it will work if you don't mind moving the sleeping platform and not being able to access the bed. The side door on the tent was also a great addition for that reason too.

 

It's like ur waiting for them to build a house....

 

I got mine installed on a saturday since I was unable to get my squadron to allow me to take a weekday off, but it took a little back and forth in emails explaining why I needed that. They do Monday through Friday installs normally though (minus maybe one day). When the GFC is complete, you'll get an email from Matthias (who is awesome) and work out the date with him if you need a special one or work it into the calendar that will be attached to the email.

Right now I'd recommend lights after 3 nights in mine after a week of owning. The fan will be coming eventually, but right now it was fine with just zipping down both windows, even in a full 14 hours of rain. Once I'm done with my interior build out this week I'll post it here and explain my reasoning.

Mines a 2020 and it should be ready for pick up in the next week or so! Original order date was November but we ran into the antenna issue and they had to redesign it.

 

Here is my buildout for the GFC that I promised. I made the cooler slide because I didn't want to keep pulling the cooler in and out and sliding it around. Found some 400lbs locking slides that work really well and were heavily discounted.

Originally I just had a stove slide out under it. This worked great, but after 2 night in the GFC last weekend we realized that we didn't want to take up more space in the bed with a large rubber made tote and would rather put a drawer under the cooler. This worked out well and I got 500lbs drawer slides for this. The drawer is 48" long so that my full size spare can sit against the cab. Just need to have a way to lock it and then I'm all set with it.

Pretty happy with the build. It's all DIY. It took a bunch of planning to make sure it was the size we needed, but it worked out great especially since it would have cost a lot to buy something like this. Highly recommend storage in the GFC.

I agree. Had on on my Taco and am debating on getting another one for the Tundra.

 

It’s most definitely very nice. Being in nursing school and working doesn’t give me a lot of time to use it though. Thinking about putting my deposit on that new GFC lite camper

I also got a softtop in storage if this thing goes.

 

I showed the GFC to my wife and she approves, but haven't showed her the price tag..

 

Unfortunately I just sold my reservation. With the new house it was the right thing to do. I didn’t show my wife the price tag either.

Love the GFC. It’s honestly the best of all worlds. If u do the math, it is the same price as a camper shell, roof rack, then a RTT on top. It’s an all in one package at the end of the day.

What I would love to see from GFC would standing room without having to move the bed panels. With the tundras and 6.5 ft bed there is plenty of room to add an extra couple feet hanging over the roof of the truck but that’s kind of one of my biggest gripes. Not enough to sell it for that reason, I have other reasons.

I wish the GFC was a little longer up top as well for the same reason. Vegabond has the back of their camper open and its nice, but $2k more for it. Agree it's not a make or break thing though.

Also wanted to get your thoughts on the rhino rack awning and if you're going to sell it if the GFC goes? I've been looking for a 270 and rhino rack has been on my short list.

 

It’s nice. Definitely can set it up just by myself very easily. Definitely one of the more budget 270 awnings out there. It’s crazy to see the machining that goes into some others awnings. My only gripe about it is that the hinges that each piece rotates on is plastic. So when ur rotating it out you have to “be careful” and make sure not too much tension is on it, cuz it can snap. Otherwise, great awning. And yes I will be selling it with the GFC because I have no use of it without the GFC.

 

I wish GFC would come out with a “luxury” line of tents. Like giving the extra standing room and other amenities that are out there that people have created. Come standard with the 3 doors they now are gonna offer. Maybe doing a fan from factory like Vagabond? Could be dope. I would pay for that.

 

Yeah thats the biggest gripe I've heard about those is the plastic piece. Any way to replace it with something metal or too difficult to replace? I'm interested when you do, but not sure what shipping would be.

I almost pulled the trigger on the extra doors, but I'm happy I didn't. Don't really feel like I need them at all. I think they'll come out with more accessories as time goes, but definitely not as fast at offering stuff as some. Honestly love the GFC though and I'm extremely happy with it.
