I am wondering if anyone tows above the 500lb. hitch weight capacity and if weight distribution systems allow for towing above recommendation. I'm looking at an older trailer with a 580 lb. hitch weight. thanks for feedback

I think 500lb is for bumper pull hitch weight. You can go higher with a real hitch setup I beleive. Some of the towing experts can yay or nay that.

A class IV hitch setup is good for 1200# of tongue weight and 12,000# of trailer weight. These are maximums. Vehicle ratings should still be used. Max payload and towing. Weight distributing setup will more evenly disperse the load between the front and rear axles, which improves handling and rear end squat, but do not change the maximums. Payload for these trucks was around 1500#, but includes all weight added to the vehicle. People, fuel, gear etc.

500 lbs is the max tongue weight with a factory hitch.

I can't imagine that the factory frame mounted hitch was only rated for 500lbs. The only factory options I see for sale now from Toyota are class IV. That hitch would have a Tongue weight capability of between 1000 and 1200# depending on setup. See if the hitch has a sticker on it to verify what class it is.

I was incorrect. The max tongue weight for my 2000 AC is 720 lbs. which makes sense as the tongue weight is generally 10% of towing capacity.

The hitch may be capable of handling 1200 lbs, but the rating is based on the truck.

Agree, see my first post. The question was the rating of the hitch. It is separate from the rating of the truck. The rating for the truck should always be followed, max payload and max towing. The equipment just needs to be rated up to the task. A class IV hitch, which is the smallest you should ever find on a full-size truck, is capable of more than the truck is rated for. So it's not a weak link.

What is the part # for factory or where did you find it? I am looking to buy a hitch for my Tundra.

Need help identifying OEM trailer harness for an 2001. The 4-pin harness should plug into a factory adapter that is wired into rear lights. See pic. Any of you with a factory tow package please take a look and let me know what you find out? Thanks
