I am in the minority - I recommend replacing the door speakers with 6x9 instead of 6.5. The 6.5 are more common and cheaper, but you give up a lot of the lower midrange that the 6x9 provide. There are a number of them (including the Kenwood mentioned above) that will fit in the doors with standard 1" adaptors. IMO they will all sound better than a 6.5. If you are going with a separate sub, disregard....

Seriously though, I'm not sure I will be able to install speakers, amp *and* sub all at the same time. (Let me restate that: It'll be hard to justify to the Mrs. why I 'need' to do that. LOL)

But I'm also a fan of bass, and it'd be nice to at least be able to replace the speakers *and* not lose a ton of low-end bass. Did you utilize the Kenwood replacements as well? If so, how do the compare to the OEMs?

 

The oem 6x9 and oem 6.5 speakers can be cut to utilize the factory mounts.

Not everyone I installed 6x9 and couldn't be happier. The cone size is almost the equivalent of an 8" speaker. Why would I compromise and install a 6.5?

 

I just finished the system from James, and I'll tell you its money WELL spent. I did take the time to do the doors (inside and outside panels) and the back wall with Kilmat sound deadening. But this system sounds awesome!! I did the two 10's instead of the single 12. It hits HARD!! I feel like a fifteen year old kid again. My (older teens) kids' friends are all in complete envy of the sound system in my truck. Even my non-audiophile wife is really impressed with it. I would do this again in a heartbeat!

 

Just wanted to add that after seeing this post I went with this option as well. I fully sound deadened my front doors and used Stinger Fast Rings. I have a Pioneer DMH-W4600NEX and wired it in Network mode and disconnected the rear door speakers. Finally got it all working list night and wow i'm impressed, even off deck power the sound is great. Running off network mode I bypassed the built-in xover on the 6x9 and did not install one on the tweeter, just using the built in xover in the deck. This gives me the ability to really fine tune the sound and also adjust the volume of the dash and doors independently.

I found my set new off eBay for $170, definitely a great speaker system and once I add a 5 channel amp and sub I'm sure I'll be even more impressed.

I will be ordering speakers from James later on. He has JL Audio C1-650's with adapters and PNP wire harnesses for out trucks.

Focal makes a direct fit speaker and so does PowerBass - Crutchfield, for some reason has different info, but members here
have used both Focal and Powerbass components.

$279 KFC-XP6902C Car Component System Select Chevrolet/Toyota

KFC-XP6902C are a direct fit for Toyota as well. No trimming of the dash to fit the 2 3/4" and they come with 6x9 adapter rings (just have to trim a few tabs for Toyota). They don't come with the OEM PNP wire harness but you can source those easily or just cut the plugs and wire direct.

 

I'm thinking of going with TACO TUNES. They are based out of San Antonio, but their systems are specifically designed for the Tundra's stock head unit and the TACO TUNES AMP mounts where the old AMP sits underneath the passenger seat, at least in my 2018 it does and it plugs into the factory wiring harness . A basic system runs roughly at a grand. But comes with a 12' sub and custom box that fits nicely behind the rear seat. They also carry the sound dampening material as well.

 

The major, consistent, differences between 6x9 and 6.5s are the 6x9s will typically have a better sensitivity rating or will be louder, but not typically louder to the point you can tell the difference. When comparing 6x9s against 6.5s most 6x9s will have a 1-2db per W difference more sensitivity, generally speaking though you'd need closer to 3db to really tell, but they are still louder.

Beyond that, bass production and air movement is a crap shoot. There are 6.5s that will easily out perform 6x9s. Cone material, suspension, xmax, all factors that affect SPL, or the "bass you can feel". Saying 6x9s out perform 6.5s or vice versa is not an inherently accurate statement.

The cons to 6x9s are the front door only has about 2.5" of depth before you hit the window rail. 6x9s mount deeper than most 6.5s simply because of the width of the framing. Unfortunately my Morel 692s would not fit without custom fabing door mounts. My 6.5 Morel Virtus 602s do fit though. Also 6x9s get into beaming much sooner than 6.5s, if thats a concern for you. Most people want loud, and wont actually be disappointed and will often over look beaming.

I ordered from them about a month ago. TERRIBLE customer service. I could not get ANYONE to answer a call, email, nothing!
I finally got ahold of them on chat and was told that I could submit a ticket for a refund. After that, I emailed @james@tech12volts and he emailed me within minutes with his #. He told me about their amps and how they are built. No thanks!
James gave me an incredible price for a Kenwood Excelon 5 channel, amp rack, all harnesses which are plug and play, ported enclosure and 10" Hertz.
I immediately cancelled my order and received a refund by the Taco guys. Whew.
I will say that being able to still use your EQ is a HUGE deal man. Taco requires you to keep everything level at 0. In addition.... There is that crazy tuning that you have to do. Downloading tones and playing them while checking voltage.

Do some research and compare James with the Taco guys. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples also. James will come out ahead in every category.
Others have had good experience with them but I did not but I am more than pleased with the way my system came out.

Not defending Taco "guys", but some of us actually like the tons of tuning.

James is so highly recommended though, seems like a sure bet for anyone that wants to just get it all squared away up front.
