Power Mirror Switch Illumination

I have seen some threads on installing a light above the switch but any luck with a pug a play switch? Was hoping the newer models would have this feature. Thank you in advance.

 

KTJO 4x4 has them on her website.

 

Theres factory illuminated ones from Toyota (I believe some corollas had the correct blue color) you would need to run a illumination wire or just accessory 12v to the pin for the light on the connector

Note they all include a button to fold the mirrors which only works with the right mirrors and wiring.

If you already have power folding mirrors they actually might be plug and play.

2018 TRD Sport. Is the Corolla one the same size?

 

I meant the one from the 2020 Corolla. Without having those switches sitting in front of me, I can't say for sure. With the pictures that I can find online, they don't look anything like one another. The Corolla is a twist style knob in the door panel.

14-19 corollas I believe all have illumination in the mirror switch. Or at least the ones I’ve noticed.

 

Well, I took the plunge and bought a Fully Illuminated "Blue" Switch and Plug-N-Play Harness from KTJO 4X4. On their website, I selected Platinum CrewMax under the Tundra model drop down, so I figured that this would be compatible.

I ordered it on Oct 21. They finally shipped it on Nov 2. I ended up getting it on Nov 6. Just like everyone else, I figured COVID had an impact on the delay.

What I ended up getting in the box was a (I'm speculating here based off of Google results) JDM '14-17 Toyota Corrolla/Auris 28 pin switch (I don't know the complete Toyota P/N, but 183779 is molded into the housing), a 28 pin to 10 pin harness with 15/30A add-a-fuse power lead, a 15/15A add-a-fuse illumination lead with a connector pin to be inserted into the J130 connector on the factory harness side, and a business card. There were no instructions included in the box. Now, I haven't reached out to KTJO 4X4 yet to see if they might have gotten my order wrong because I have an 8 pin J131 mirror switch connector in my truck. I'm going to do more research to see if perhaps I got the wrong harness or if the switch is indeed electrically incompatible.

IMHO, this $190.83 switch was way overpriced and the free shipping code didn't work. But their website claimed that this switch was discontinued by Toyota and is extremely rare. Whatever, it is what it is. In hindsight, it appears that a CAPQX Chinese replica switch can be found on AliExpress. But I have not verified that.

So, there is no disclaimer on the KTJO website regarding trim compatibility. But they did have this disclaimer..."INSTALLATION GUIDELINES:

The link didn't work for me. There were 17 product pictures on KTJO 4X4 fully illuminated switch product page with no supporting comments that I thought were only representative of the part. I turns out that picture 2 and 3 on the page are what your harness needs to look like for this to work.

If you have a trim WITHOUT retract or memory (i.e. SR5) and have a 10 pin J130 connector for your mirror switch, this should be plug and play. The mirror switch acts as a switching device, changes polarity, completes a circuit, and respective motor current passes through the switch.

Just to verify the pinout of the 10 pin J130 connector in your harness...

Pin 1- factory empty, but added for ILL+.
Pin 2- light green; HR (RH mirror horizontal motor); (+)B when R selected and LEFT direction is pressed; (-)E when R selected and RIGHT direction is pressed.
Pin 3- green; VR (RH mirror vertical motor); (+)B when R selected and UP direction is pressed; (-)E when R selected and DOWN direction is pressed.
Pin 4- violet; VL (LH mirror vertical motor); (+)B when L selected and UP direction is pressed; (-)E when L selected and DOWN direction is pressed.
Pin 5- black; HL (LH mirror horizontal motor); (+)B when L selected and LEFT direction is pressed; (-)E when L selected and RIGHT direction is pressed.
Pin 6- yellow; M+ (M+ pin 11 on each mirror); (+)B when L or R is selected and DOWN or RIGHT directions are pressed; (-)E when L or R is selected and UP or LEFT directions are pressed.
Pin 7- white with black stripe; E (ground).
Pin 8- light green; B (power, 7.5A ACC).
Pin 9- empty.
Pin 10- empty.

Pin 1- (added in kit) red with gray stripes. ILL+ (illumination). The add-a-fuse can simply be inserted into your 15A TAIL fuse in your under dash fuse panel. If you prefer to splice, you can tap into any of the following: J50 cargo light switch pin 1 (blue), J132 dome light switch pin 1 (blue), J124 BSM switch pin 10 (sky blue), J104 headlight level switch pin 3 (blue), J8 back window switch pin 8 (light green), or J62 22-pin gray junction connector pins 1-11 are all ILL+ (1-L, 2-G, 3-SB, 4-GR, 5-EMPTY, 6-L, 7-G, 8-BE, 9-LG, 10-W, 11-EMPTY). If you want to simply add a pin, J62 22-pin gray junction connector pins 5 and 11 should be empty (same ILL+ that feeds all of the aforementioned switches from 7.5A PANEL fuse).

Now, if you're lucky like me and have a trim WITH retract and memory (i.e. Platinum, 1794...not sure about Limited and TRD Pro) and have an 8 pin J131 connector for your mirror switch, obviously this will NOT be plug and play for you. Our mirror switch acts as a low current microprocessor controlled integrated circuit with a matrix of switches (kinda like a keyboard) that sends data via a 3 or 4 wire data bus to the Main Body ECU (aka BCM-Body Control Module), which in turn communicates to the Outer Mirror Control ECU via CAN bus (Controller Area Network protocol) which then controls each mirror. In other words, it's complicated. The motor currents don't pass through the switch; they're controlled by the OMC ECU. DO NOT TRY TO WIRE UP MOTOR CURRENT DIRECTLY TO YOUR 8 PIN MIRROR SWITCH CONNECTOR! DOING SO WILL RESULT IN A MB ECU REPLACEMENT AND WILL REQUIRE A TECHSTREAM INITIALIZATION! THESE ARE SIGNAL WIRES ONLY.

So, here's the pinout of the 8 pin J131 connector in your harness...

Pin 1- Blue; MSW to BCM J4-12 MIRS (mirror motor output); J131-1 to J131-2 (J4-12 to J4-2) 11-14V whenever mirror master switch is L or R and UP, DOWN, LEFT, or RIGHT is pressed; <1V when mirror master switch is OFF;
Pin 2- Gray; E1 to BCM J4-2 MIRE (mirror motor output); return/ground channel to BCM; see Pin 1 and 3.
Pin 3- Red; M+ to BCM J4-11 MIRB (mirror motor output); J131-3 to J131-2 (J4-11 to J4-2) 11-14V whenever mirror master switch is L or R; <1V when mirror master switch is OFF.
Pin 4- White with black stripe; E2 (ground to chassis).
Pin 5- empty.
Pin 6- empty. B (for inspection of retract feature only).
Pin 7- empty. MR (for inspection of retract feature only).
Pin 8- Violet; MF to BCM J3-6 RET (mirror retract motor output); J3-6 to DB-21 mirror retract switch ON 11-14V; retract switch OFF <1V.

Ok, I keep flipping between the diagram, switch pinout resistances, and the BCM pinout voltages. It's confusing AF. It's almost like the manual flips the functuons of blue and the red wires. Reminds me of a few movies. More to come on that. I need a beverage.

Going back to the KTJO 4X4 switch with the plug and play harness inserted into the switch. I connected Pin 1 to + and Pin 7 to - on a 12V power supply. Illumination works and matches the blue in my truck.

I have no idea what the pinout is on the 28 pin mirror switch provided in the kit other than what the harness goes to. If anyone can find a pinout, that would be appreciated.

I'm still not sure if need to get a 10 pin male connector, 8 pin female connector, some 100/250/470/800 Ohm resistors, and wire up an adapter harness...or if I need to start thinking about an Arduino setup.

Let me see what KTJO 4X4 says. Maybe I got the wrong setup. Has nobody installed an illuminated mirror switch in a Platinum/ 1794 yet? I figured with all of the rants, that someone would have by now.

 

This is what came in the KTJO 4X4 kit.
The 28 pin fully illuminated "blue" mirror switch, a 28 pin to 10 pin harness with 15/30A add-a-fuse power lead, a 15/15A add-a-fuse illumination lead with a connector pin to be inserted into the J130 connector on the factory harness side, and a business card.

 

If your Tundra doesn't have mirror/seat/telescopic/tilt memory and you have a 10 pin J130 mirror switch connector like this, then this kit should be plug and play. But then you would have a mirror retract button that isn't used? But hey, it's illuminated now.

 

Man, my head sure hurts trying to figure this out. I'll just keep drinking until the headache goes away.

Thanks for doing all the research, I always wish the button was illuminated but I will say now that I've had the truck a year, I haven't moved the mirror positions and I can now just tactically find the folding button which is hand going down some narrow streets or squeezing by people. So if it were plug and play I would contemplate it but with all the issues you're running into, definitely not worth the effort imho.

 

For you Platinum/1794 guys, this is part of the wiring diagram for the remote control mirror with memory and retract utilizing the 8 pin J131 connector. This only shows the switch to the BCM. Unless you want to lose functionality and bypass the BCM and OM ECU, the rest is irrelevant.

So, from what I gather...there's a version of the Tundra switch with memory, but no retract. Limited, TRD Pro? Anyway, you guessed it...8 pin CAN bus as well. Pins 1-3 are the same, only difference is pin 8 is now empty.

 

NP. I just wished I researched it more before ordering the switch. Still would be nice if the buttons were lit. I always retract my mirrors when I park in a parking lot, especially at work. And it's always dark when I get there. I know where the button is at, but it's still aggravating. Same goes for the door lock switches and window lock button. But then we are talking LIN and CAN bus networks. For now, I enabled unlock when shift to P and I yell at my dog when he tries to roll down the back passenger windows.

Edit: Nevermind, I found one on Toyota-tech.eu. It was only 4 Euros for an hour subscription...and I had access to worldwide models, not just North American.

Still not sure on the part numbers specifically. Here's what I found...
I think 84870-12261 and 84870-12210-C0 are fully illuminated green and 84870-28040 is lower illuminated green 11 pin. Not sure about the rest.

 

Watching. I’ve wanted this switch illuminated since I bought the truck. My garage is too small and I have to retract the mirrors when pulling in and out.
