So my 06 double cab is legit rust free! Been in AZ whole life... planning on going Midwest to Kansas where they salt roads. I really want to keep this thing rust free, is there anything I can do to my frame that’s safe and will keep it from rusting?

Are you moving there or just visiting once?

I would coat the entire undercarriage with wool wax or something similar before each winter if you're planning to move there.

Woolwax the fuck out of it. Apply grease to the frame too wherever you want.

Okay sweet, will one coat cover the whole winter? I’ll prob do it around November-December. Is salt the only thing that really causes rust/corrosion

I'd drive a different vehicle. I'm from the midwest originally. That salt water gets into everything.

I also would say if u have another vehicle do that.. but the woolwax will stay in a lot of spots, but theres a few spots where it will need touched up on.. bottom and back of the pumpkin, front axle if applicable etc.

You would be surprised at the deals available. Hertz has file chapter 11 for the lack of business and the others are close behind.
It is certainly worth a phone call.

Spray chainsaw bar oil all over the bottom of the truck. Drive down a dusty road. Repeat a few times.

I live in Maine and drive a sacrifical winter vehicle because all the undercoating in the world doesnt stop the shit from creeping in eventually.. but one winter in Kansas shouldnt kill it. I paint all the welds with Rustoleum and CRC the underside. Used to use that stuff in the military for equipment exposed to the saltwater.

Grease rub with 2 tubs STP Moly-b with a sponge ($12). 6 hours of work that last forever. Plunge it up in the box frame portion like you would a cannon.

Spray the entirety of the frame with PB Penetrator twice a year to soak the welds and folds up in the box frame. Takes 10 minutes and costs $6 a spray.

Watch this video for a basic comparison of some of the leading brands. I’m removing/treating rust under my ‘05 DC right now. After watching this video and further digging, I’m going with Corroseal followed by CRC Inhibitor over everything.

You could spray first if you wanted, but if you did I’d wait a week before following up with the Grease as the frame will be slippery. I rubbed mine first with the STP from Autozoned Moly-b EP and a sponge. Made a plunger out of flexible rod and attached the sponge and reamed out the box frame.

    Two prong strategy.

    1) Build grease film to block oxygen from rusting steel.

    2) PB Penetrate to soak welds and folds unreachable to any grease of these other coating spray products. If PB works for rusted nuts then why not use it for the folds/welds?

That could be worse. A lot of places spray salt brine on dirt roads to keep the dust down.

If you're just going for 1 winter, wash it, and spray it with whatever you want. Then when it warms up after a snow run it through the car wash.

A single winter isn't going to cause major rust even if you do nothing.

Exactly. These other coatings will not penetrate like the PB. I like the PB because it shoots far with easy control and you can also use the straw to get into holes of the cross-members and chassis cracks.

Ill throw my .02 cents in here... I'm using Fluid Film and i purchased a nozzle adapter with a 24 inch hose which allows me to spray deep down inside the box frame areas.

Woolwax is better but fluid film is decent stuff. Just doesnt stay on in certain areas. It stays on for a long time on the frame rails i have noticed, and other closed off sections.

I didn’t say it wasn’t useful. I don’t use a cassette player anymore. FF washes off too easily compared to some other products out there. Would rather spend less time reapplying. Ymmv
