On my 2020 twice now I have experienced a glitch with the push-button start and wondering if anyone else has experienced this as well. What this issue is I get in truck put my foot on the brake press the start button, the truck does not start and on the dash, it says put foot on brake and press button. I then do it again this time it states ignition on but the truck is not running at all. Try several times again and the same setup as above. I wait 15 minutes and try again and it operates normally. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar.

Nope, mine has been flawless. (As it should be...that's a pretty 'key' piece of technology there. Heh.)

I’ve caught myself being a little fast on the button a couple times. Hitting it before or just as my foot hits the brake. It seems confused for a moment on the retry but I’m talking fractions of a second, not minutes.

I have a 2018 Tundra but the wife’s Avalon has experienced this problem. A lot of times I will jump in and push the button and it seems if you do it too fast like push the button the same time you push brake then in gets into a “confused state” it seems and takes a bit to get back in sync

Probably the only real thing you can do is try and catch it on video and take it to the dealer with the video as proof. I had to do that with a Honda Civic i leased. the radio was flipping through all the options (Bluetooth, aux, fm, am) real quick for like 30 minutes. I finally got it on video to show proof. The dealer ended up swapping out the entire stereo unit.

I’m sorry this is happening to your new truck. Even more of a reason I love my outdated ‘16 with a normal key.

I’m not trying to be a jerk, but that’s like saying “contraceptives don’t work all the time, I’ll just pull out instead.” Just trying to be funny. I bet the brake sensor isn’t working properly.

    Where's the beer/Bourbon?

I've had issues before with old traditional key being locked out. Hopefully it's just a glitch.

Put me in this category too. Just like the doors unlocking when you grab the door handle, it seems like you've got to give the truck a solid second to process a signal before you can proceed.

Grab door, wait one second to open

Put foot (solidly) on brake, wait one second to start truck.

I annoyingly will be washing the truck by hand with the key in my pocket. I'm constantly locking and unlocking the doors :smack:

I've noticed a delay in our systems as well. I'm starting to get used to it. But I haven't been locked out from starting for up to 15 minutes waiting. That's why i'm thinking there might be a possible issue or system glitch.

The key allows you to jump in and turn the key and let go and the truck starts. Simple.

The last thing I would want is an electrical problem linked to this on the trail. That would be very frustrating

This is exactly what I experienced. If you are too quick to the draw before brake records to ECU and start button, this lag can be a little long and cause you to not start. Just wait a second and try again and then it works.

Dang it, I forgot to finish my original post. Got distracted by that smell of coffee.

Yes, I agree...I think the OP is having a system glitch of some kind. I had a similar problem when I put in LED bulbs in the parking brake light. It messed with the antenna located there and a few times the truck didn't recognize the FOB was in range. But the "Foot on brake" message suggests something is wrong with the brake sensor.

Any chance you recently changed your cab lights to LED? When I switched all my interior and cab lights to LED I had issues with push button start, keyless entry on handle and with the fob. I turned off the cab lights with the switch and no issues since. I assume somehow it messes with the antenna.

No I have not changed my led lights. I am going with the theory that other members have described hitting start button a mil a second before brake. Just not sure if that scenario puts the truck in the bizzarre state I mentioned with it stating ignition on but the engine is not running and taking some time before it will actually restart.

All I know is that if you have your fob and push the ignition without pressing the brake the truck will cycle through 2 different modes similar to when you would turn the key partially but not turn the car over. Your auxiliary systems start to turn on. Radio first then windows and all the electrical stuff. Pushing the button a third time turns it off. I imagine it goes into that mode if the foot isn’t firmly on the brake or the brake sensor is not calibrated. The waiting 15 minutes thing may be a time-out on the auxiliary mode. Haven’t tried starting the truck from auxiliary mode by pressing the brake and pushing the button again though.

This happened to my 2020 shortly after I bought it, I pushed the start button twice without my foot on the break to turn on the ignition without starting the engine. Then put my foot on the break so I could shift the tranny into neutral without the engine running. A while after turning off the ignition I went to start the truck, put my foot on the break pushed the start button and the starter wouldn't engage. If I remember correctly the dash said to press the break and push start, what I had just done. I tried again, a few times with the same result as the first time. I looked in the owners manual and found nothing, called Toyota care and they were just going to send someone to my location. I then called the dealers service department and after talking to the second service technician he asked me about break pedal firmness, then when putting my foot back on the break I did notice the pedal was high and firm. I pushed harder on the break and it then moved down towards the floor, then pushed the start button and it started.

I am not sure what happened but it would seem that shifting into neutral without the engine running had some adverse affect causing the break pedal to firm up, but just pushing hard enough to move it down allowed the starter button to function.

On my wife's Lexus, it says to put the key fob right next to the start button and it will have enough power to start it, but then you better change the battery out.

There is a warning that the FOB battery is low.

    Battery Type:CR2032 (vehicles
with a smart key system) lithium battery

■If the key battery is depleted
    The following symptoms may occur:
●The smart key system (if equipped) and wireless remote control will not
    function properly.
●The operational range will be reduced.
