Sounds about right if they are really taking their time and using high quality materials. There is a big difference in how/who/what goes into your job. That being said its probably not worth the expense based on our trucks value unless your have money to burn.

I’ve done a DIY and the clear coat went funky on me. User first time error and doing it out doors were contributing factors. I recovered the botch job with some wet sanding skills and then a follow up polish. Its still better than looking at side doink after all these years.

It's overkill to take the vehicle apart as the shop with the 8-10k quote says. I'd seek another 2 quotes from 4+ star rated places local to you if possible. I'd check in with shops who do more collision work than repaints, there's definitely a difference.

For too many years I've been dabbling with learning PDR so I can fix sheetmetal issues without bondo, plasma or welder. Realize sometimes it's all about the "10ft view" though. Good example: Here's one of the two paint/dent defects I found on my truck and how I fixed. I used two 10 minute treatments of Naval Jelly, and paint-matched touchup, which was a mostly accurate color. Can you spot the damage? There's actually a dent there also, and I swapped the bumper.

I'm kind of lucky when it comes time to paint my truck. My best friend since 6th grade, (1985), is a painter at Maaco and he owes me a couple favors. His boss told him that he could use the booth on the weekends if he needed to and all I have to do is pay for materials.
My dad was a body man for a lotta years and I got all of his old tools, so when the time comes, I'm doing the body work to get rid of the dings and the actual paint job should only cost me about $500 for materials and beer/burgers.

damn I can’t tell. Looks brand new! I think you’re right about getting more quotes. The initial shock made me not want to go look for more but I’ll end up looking around. Guy said you can make a macco paint job a good one if you add all the prep and clear coat options they don’t mention on commercials. By then he said your about where I am. But I’m gonna go to a macco and just see what they say. I have 3 dents I want to fix but there’s a paint less dent guy around here that’s supposed to be good. I was planning on trying that.

I completely agree with the heat. I was messing under the hood yesterday about 2pm and I couldn’t touch my fenders they were so hot. It’s insane how much heat this color retains. Thinking about some sort of roof overhang at my new house so it’s out of the sun.

90% of the final result of any paint job is the prep work. If it isn't prepped worth a damn, the final result is gonna shine like a mud fence, but not as durable

Your paint looks great though! Am I missing something in the picture or a previous post?

Yes, I got lucky with this entire truck. 1 previous owner that drove it less than 7k a year for 15 years, no evidence of towing (the hitch didn’t have a single scratch on it), and the bed was lightly used. Not to mention the new(ish) paint and 4Runner rims.

I do really like your dark red DC though. Really great looking.

I love the color of my truck! always had black before this, so im surprised i liked it so much. I dont normally post these pics, i try and angle it so most cant see the damage. but heres the worst of it. been taking before pics as i plan on fixing some or repainting and clear coat on the roof...dont judge too hard. she's lived outside for 16 years in GA sun.

Oh and rock chips are the bane of my existence.

Amazing how much bigger those 285/75's look than my 285/70's. Great pictures Chris.

Thanks Erik. I think I’ll stick with 285/75’s for a while. Wanted 35’s when these are done but they’re barely taller and much wider. Still have to finish grinding and hammering for these to clear after adding the spacers.

We do need to go Wheeling sometime. My truck sat on that same Beach just two weeks ago. That's a fun fast dirt road on the way out there. Did you see any bald eagles? Last time we were there we saw 5, picking up fish left and right.20200704_132229.jpg 9591.jpg 9608.jpg

I’m always down! Yeah that road is fun but I slam my rear bumps when I’m really weighed down. Wasn’t at Meadow that long due to gusts of 25 out of the SW. I did see a couple at White Rock the days before but no pics. 65D2816D-08EA-48B2-A0C1-83BC85B2AAD2.jpg8A6F4CD7-9B0B-4D1C-BAFE-8FEFC1D19EAF.jpgBD65EBED-25FC-4851-A7FB-EC0F3F78923B.jpg

Yeah that Southwest wind out there is pretty normal. I was pushing 40mph down the smooth part of that dirt road. I just had to keep reminding myself to slow down over the dirt whoops. I didn't want to shake up the beer. Although my truck does rides pretty smooth with a bed full of gear and two boats on the rack.

Here is my red roof. I am going to repaint it myself, outside (no other options) when all the supplies arrive.
Here is my red roof. Repaint will happen once all supplies arrive. It will have to happen outdoors but I will do it at the crack of dawn when there is typically no breeze.

But lets look at the truck from this angle, so much better. Hey kinda like me: looks good from the sides but showing its age up top!
