That is a cherry M1A. I am envious.

Is that a GI rifle or a modern rep? If it's GI, it must have never been issued.

Welcome from the Texas Hill Country!

That's an M1 Garand, a real battle rifle that actually uses a clip.

I suppose so. As opposed to Springfield Armory's proprietary designation M1A.

I thought the Garand had a government M1-A1 designation, but must have confused it with the M1-A1 and M1-A2 (full auto) carbine variants. Totally different rifles, totally different cartridge. Sometimes carried by officers in lieu of a 45 Colt. I have an M1 carbine, but it's a post war commercial version with the metal handguard cover. Extremely accurate at 100 yards if the shooter can see the open sights. :D

Now that Garand looks "issued" and well-used. What stories those "hickies" might tell. :D

Your carbine is missing the bayonet lug.

After the war, there was a market for M1 carbines that continued into the sixties iirc. Enterprising companies bought up the surplus mil-spec parts and assembled M1 carbines to sell to the public. When they ran out of surplus parts, they continued to make them commercially from scratch. I once did the research on the military production serial numbers, and I think mine was manufactured of surplus parts after the war.

A friend (who was not a gun nut) bought the carbine mail-order in the late sixties or early seventies, and stored it in his attic near Houston. He gave me that carbine, and a POS Stevens-Savage Model 87D semi-automatic 22, along with some Korean war era surplus 30-Carbine ammo.

The carbine was in pretty good shape, but the 22 was covered in rust. I quick-blued the 22 and refinished the stock. Sadly, as a firearm, it was still a POS, now just a pretty POS. The Parkerized on the carbine was in good shape, and I refinished the water-stained stock with a "sporter-slick" linseed oil finish. I even shot up some of the 40 yo French surplus ammo, but retired that stuff when I noticed the cases were splitting, and not in the usual places.

Note bayonet lug below the barrel and perforated metal upper cover. Sans web sling and oiler:

"M1A" is the trademarked name Springfield Armory Inc. gave their M14.
