Catalytic Converter

Hey guys,

Someone stole one of the catalytic converters off a friend of mine's Sequoia a couple days ago... has anyone replaced just one of these? Or is it better to replace both of them at the same time?

Any quality replacements for a decent cost?

His truck sounds badass straight piped though!

 

Try Walker only because I remember someone else saying this. Brand new OEM are like $1500 each. Might want to file insurance.

 

Thanks for the tip. $200 on rock auto isn’t too bad. Hard to justify $1500 for one side on a 18 year old truck!

 

I have used Walkers on a couple on a couple of vehicles and they worked just fine.

 

Well, if insurance is paying they need to pay for OEM at $1500ish PLUS labor. Your deductible? Doing the math you might have something positive to consider.

 

Just had mine stolen recently. Apparently on 05 there is no aftermarket replacement. Had to use OEM. $2100! Just for the converter
And the POS damaged the O2 sensor pigtail also!

 

I went magnaflow replacements and they both worked great. No codes. About 250 each for direct bolt on replacements

 

BestGen pics of his 05 leads me to believe the 06 @ whothefat my be in the same boat. I wonder if insurance covers this?

 

My insurance covered it thankfully. Still I was out of pocket $300. Total bill was $2644.25!

 

Whats the ‘skinny’ (update) on this repair?

 

We ordered the Walker from RockAuto so we're waiting on delivery. Looks to be a bolt on replacement. $250 with shipping.

Ill grab some pictures and post them up when we do the job this week

 

This type of theft is going on rampant here in Houston. Here is what you need to prevent this from happening again.

 

OR Fab used to make one for first gens.i haven't seen another with that design.

Best bet is to check in with Skid Row, they make plates for our trucks but I'm not sure how well they protect the cats. Maybe somebody with the full kit can chime in.

 

Got this job knocked out yesterday. It is not too rough of a job, a couple YouTube videos out there show all the details. I did round off the head on one of the bolts connecting the cat to the header, had to cut it off with a Dremel there isn’t much room in there.

You can get access to the bolts there if you take off the front tire and pull down the little rubber trim piece.

This was on a really clean ‘03 and those bolts really didn’t want to break free!

Update: My buddy with the Sequoia told me today he was driving after we replaced the CAT and got the Check Engine Light, VSC TRAC and VSC OFF lights on. Coming by later to run the codes, anyone have this issue?

 

Likely one of the ABS sensors.

 

If the sensor wasn't plugged in or seated correctly it may trigger it as it goes through 2 cycles before popping the CEl, If the sensor was replaced while the battery was still connected it will trigger a CEL as well. Double check connectors and if all is good it should clear it self in 2 or 3 cycles, or clear it out with an obd2 reader and it should be fine after.

 

Trying to avoid going to the garage to slide under the truck, do those cat-cover plates prevent any specific regular maintenance, or is it pretty much a bolt-up-and-forget?

 

Based on these pictures, it appears for 2wd its a bolt on and forget, 4wd it appears it will need to be removed for maintenance.
Eventually both will have to be removed for maintenance, for example that starter...

 

that must have been it, we unplugged the O2 sensor with the battery still hooked up. Thanks for the reply!

 

I just did all 4 of my o2 Sensors with the battery still hooked up. No check engine light after doing the work. Also, I Ohms tested both my Old Rear Sensors and they were zero (should be 13ish) and never set off my CEL for who knows how long?

So either the battery hook/unhook (setting off code) is true or something is wrong with my Computer. My CEL lights up at Ignition start per the normal process and disappears as it should with the other lights.

 

Man, that SUCKS! I am hoping your friend lives in Las Vegas also, and not California.

 

They just made a huge bust here in Edmonton, found a storage locker with about $300,000 worth of catalytic converters.

My wife's was stolen off her Mazda CX-5 a little while back, they took off the O2 sensor and the second converter. Since the second one was after the O2 sensor i just had a shop weld in a straight pipe and install a new O2 sensor, worked fine as there was no more sensors after the O2 one.

 

That is terrible. The $$$$ & crappy days victims dealt with because by these morons. I hope they get some serious time behind bars.

 

This must be a west coast thing. I never hear about cats getting stolen here in TN. I'm sure it's happened but you seem to have an abundance of shitheads living out there.

 

Could be the very strict/expensive CA converter replacement laws that drive the black market. Toyota Prius cars have a serious cat theft problem, I believe.

 

Our starters are up in the valley.

 

There is no hole for trans fluid changes, so not a permanent bolt on. Unless you make a hole or get a valve to replace the drain plug.
