Refinished wheels?

Wanted to get peoples thoughts on refinished wheels? I like my stock wheels, but I want them black to match the darker theme I’m going for on my truck. I’ve found a lot of refinished OEM Toyota wheels around and was always worried it would chip off or fade over years. Rather spend the money up front than buy wheels 2x because it faded or chipped off over time (not user error curb rash.....wifey).

So I had my heart set on some 2016 FJ Wheels but I think they would require a wheel spacer as they are 16” wheels. Ideally I want to avoid spacers or adapters and I really only want Toyota wheels. I’ve never found aftermarket wheels I really love. Ever.

Then I found my current wheels On my truck refinished black and I really like them. Which has me thinking.... I could either buy these and sell mine, look around locally for a powder coating place (which I could also have them re powder coat my tool box at the same time )or a shop that could paint them so it lasts longer. Or I could just strip my wheels and rattle can it! Seen good results on here.

So...refinished wheels worth it or no??

A good powder coat shop will charge around $100 per wheel, that may or may not include chemical stripping of the old paint.

I had 2 wheels that were black and very faded, dropped them off at a shop and had them coated a bright green. They were $90 each.

 

Same here. I wasn't finding aftermarket wheels that I liked, so decided to have mine powder coated. I think they turned out great and very happy with the investment of $60/wheel including lug nuts.

 

Had mine powder coated 13 years ago for $40 a wheel and they still look great.

 

Powder coating wheels is a great option.
I would verify the offset of the Sequoia wheels, they could be different than the Tundra.

 

Agreed, powdercoat is the way to go.

Just got a quote off the phone for a local powder coat place....$125 per wheel, $1 per lug nut, they dont do center cap if its plastic. id have to paint it.

And it would take 1 week.....

Seems kinda nuts $520(ish) and i have to paint my center caps still....going to call 2 more places.

 

It will take some time. Get shops into a bidding war if you can. That seems to be on the high side. Biggest drawback not having vehicle. Always maybe thought getting a 2nd set, getting coated and then mounted would let you keep use of vwhicle.

Yea i felt like it was too, plus me having to paint and match the center caps to what they did...seems like more work than i want, personally. And yea, my biggest problem is being out a truck for a week. If i bought a second set im paying 2x what i would for the FJ wheels...tried calling 2 more places but no answer, probably powder coating stuff lol..ill see what they say before i make a choice. thanks!

 

that'd be a no brainer for me...$300 my wheels then a few hours spray painting. the FJ wheels are $600-700 depeding on the month of ebay..thanks for the help!

 

That's a nice job. The coating place I went to has some colors that are cheaper, black is one of those. Since I went "Salsa Verde" on my spare wheels I had to pay a little extra.

definitely ask around, bigger more commercial shops charge more than smaller independent business.

 

So people who had their wheels powder coated, did you paint to center caps or where you able to find some that were black?

 

I don't use center caps. The spare wheels were originally powder coated matte black and the caps were just spray painted to match.

Two cans of Duplicolor Aluminum 103 and one can of Clear Coat gave these better than new results. They make a darker Smoked Aluminum Color if you want. Both colors are Acrylic Lacquer Enamel based so you could technically pick a Black Color from their product line and then finish it with Clear Coat. Approx. $30 in total cost.

Used playing cards and stagger lined them up around the rim lip and rubber tire instead of tape. Prep work consisted of a 220 sanding sponge and Alcohol Wiping. I took the wheels off the truck to make it easier to paint. Did the prep with the tires on the truck.

Might as well go ahead and wire wheel the inside of the wheel to remove the oxidation and prime and paint that part glossy black first with a less expensive rattle can. Makes for a clean look. Easy to clean.

 

Those look good! Im definitely thinking that may be a good option at this point. they are starting to flake around the lug nut holes so it might be worth it just to fix it for cheap while i figure out what to do. Dont need new tires hopefully for about 10k more, so planning on doing all of this at once.

 

Thank you. I was unsure how the Aluminum Color would look. Was at the Auto Store looking at the stuff and a guy that works at a Used Stealer doing their paint said they use it all the time with great results. He even did his BMW and showed me in the parking lot.

Take your time and do it right. Its lots of work but well worth it. Better than paying $$$ unless you want to.

 

^^ This. A small local shop does mine for 80 per wheel, including spray painting my plastic center caps in the same color (usually matte charcoal or black). 2-3 day turnaround.

Those look great. I've been trying to decide what to do with my wheels.

 

Get some 180 grit and sand down your wheels front and back til no shine, tape up good, hook up U-pol raptor gun to compressor at 55-60psi and spray em...you will not regret doing it if done patiently. The finish is superb to powder coating for 2 reasons (more if you like raptor already) one being the cost of 2 liters of raptor being $60 which will get you 2 very good coats on 4 wheels and the other reason is touch ups on boo-boos is so easy a caveman could do it...powder coat boo-boos are no bueno

 

Those wildpeaks look dang sexy on those wheels! I really want to try some m/t's for this next round of tires but it's hard to step away from the falkens! I'm at 40 ish percent tread (trying to get through the summer with them) and they sound like mud tires so I'm ok with the added noise of some knobby's for 20k miles or so. Plus I romp in Mexico for 6 months of the year so some beefier tires would be fun!

 

Yep, painted my center caps in matte black. 1 beer job.

 

This looks great. I have the same army green DC. Any chance you can share some additional pictures of whole truck. I was thinking of doing the same powder coating to my stock wheels. Btw, are those matte coating or satin?
