What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Guys like you, and me are always tinkering, and improving. It will be consumed.

 

I am not a wheel expert, but believe my Patrick Star Fish OEM Model Wheels are the 4.5 backspace 16” and I have 285/75/r16 Michelins. They do rub very slightly on the inside. I’ve been on 285’s for about 16 years. They fit the well nicely and no need for trimming or removing stuff to fit a tire in place.

Some people report the 285/75/r16 in ‘off road’ tires are too big and rub too much due to the extra side well tread. Michelin Defenders LTX are my 3rd set and are highly recco’d. Quiet. Do well in snow/sand/street/wet. Last long time.

I use to do that all the time. After driving cross country on i70, I gotta say that smart tap was bliss with all the passing needed.

Reason I say the sweet spot is I've heard less that 4.5 can cause the wheels to rub the fender/pinch weld, and wears out your LBJs, CVs and other components faster. Larger than 4.5 causes rubbing and most OEM wheels are more than 4.5 except the Patrick Stars PHM has.
I guess since the big favorites in the toyota community for aftermarket/off road wheels (SCS and FN Wheels) are both offered in 4.5 or less, I think we would heard more negative information if they still had lots of rub or caused accelerated component wear? Tough to pull the trigger on that much money and it turns out you still need spacers or have to live with rub.

In other news, I did the rear diff and T-Case fluids yesterday. Also, both the rear diff and T-case gear oil was bright green. Threw me for a loop when I saw it. Had to look it up. Guess it was a SAE 90 gear oil. Looked great, not burnt (although I dont know exactly how it looked going in), but smell was negligible. Rear diff breather is completely clean, but I'll be installing the extension soon.

Now for the front diff. Man, what a bear. Ended up stripping the hex drain plug with my 10mm allen socket. As soon as I felt movement I looked and could tell it was deforming. Great. Left it, and a quick search showed that its a common issue. Called my guy and he said to drop it off tonight and he'll have it out by tomorrow morning. And while its in there he said he would take off the broken sway bar link i've been trying to ignore. Extended Suspension Maxx's will go in after that.

 

Without knowing the wheel width there is no such thing as a sweet spot.

On an 8" wide wheel 4"bs is the goal for 285 tires. You'll have minimal rubbing, if any, on your body or frame. You will rub, but only slightly. You can do mild trimming to stop the rubbing.

On a 9" wide wheel I would aim between 4 and 4.5", but accept that 4.5" will hit frame with a 285 tire, not bad but it will hit. You will also hit body, you can pull back the fender liner and beat the pinch weld inward to make room. Front bumper you can trim the very corner off of, front mud flaps you can remove or let your tires remove them over time.

10" wheel or wider, you're on your own.

 

I want my wheels and tires to emulate the look in the picture. I dig this look, as you can tell I like 80’s looking AR style wheels and a wider or oversized width tire. How do I get this look on a Tundra?

 

Looks like a 9" wide wheel with 3.5" backspacing, 305 or 315 width tires and a sawzall.
start cutting up the truck. Unfortunately these trucks can't stuff much tire without cutting and possibly welding.

 

Okay, what about this look? How can a Taco achieve more greatness than the Tundra? Maybe the Hand modeler’s wisdom and conservatism regarding possibilities with our trucks is sadly true? Albeit this reality is lame.

 

I'd have to write a long novel for that. Believe me I get sad when I see my neighbors '98 Ranger on 35s and I barely fit 33s.

Here is what 285/75/16 with 8" wide wheels and 4.5 backspacing looks like. Maybe 2" of lift up front, maybe 1" of lift rear, I don't really know how tall my truck is compared to stock these days. It's almost dead level, I'm parked on an incline.

 

Gimme your setup with “Tweener” tires and I can be satisfied! Nice looking rig. Though I will need 17’s to fit the 14W bigger brake upgrade?

 

Thanks. Yeah you'll need 17s for those brakes. Width and backspace will be the same. You'll have more tire options, 285/70/17 or 285/75/17 or even 34x10.5x17, the second two will need a little more trimming but it's not anything hard to do.

 

I drove the pcar to Cinci and back on Saturday to help a pcarbro fix his car after letting the smoke out of some wiring, then didn't do a GD thing on Sunday. Drove the Tundra to work on Monday.
Knock sensor wiring hasn't fixed itself yet.
Going to have to put together some parts orders soon. Can't have the (41 year old) pcar be my most reliable form of transport.

You rebadge. I’m trying to find the right emblems to rebadge my tailgate! Lol. 2nd gen black emblems are all meh. Can’t get factory other than tundra and 4x4

Now that I am due for an alignment and the tires on my truck (Ohtsu st5000) dont have too much life left, I also consider the black wheels. Its either go that direction or stay stock. I like your trucks look.
