WTF my 19’ CM payload 1385payload?

So I know i have a 4x4 CM 5.7 Tundra, coming from a 3/4 Gm Yukon i know its payload is shy of a 3/4 tons payload.

the other day i was detailing my tundra and noticed in the door seal it said my payload was 1385, I remember seeing on toyotas website it being for the CM was 1560 roughly?

is it because i have steel wheels,
Oem rubber bed rug? Rubber oem floor mats?
Where did my 175 lbs of capacity go?

 

Any added options reduce payload. Could be any factory or dealer added stuff, even as small as step bars.

 

Oversized fuel tank, difference between double and crewmax, and other options....

 

I have a basic tundra, no options, small 26 gal fuel tank, no steps bars etc.

 

My 2020 Limited CM is listed at 1220 pounds, then -54 pounds for running boards.

 

I'm jealous of your 1385 lbs.

There is usually another label fixed to the door jamb that indicates the factory addons which reduce your payload capacity. Do you see that label by chance?

Any factory options listed in your sticker? Even sunglasses technically reduce payload if left in your truck.

Payload is a big reason I just traded my Tundra in for a new 3/4 ton. It doesn't take much to max it out, especially with any trailer tongue weight.

My CM is 1185.

It may be worthwhile finding a new sticker with a higher payload and replacing this one

 

Plain f250 6.2 gas has 3300 lbs payload fook.

 

Side note: there are some configurations of the 2019 Ram 1500 that have less than 1000 lbs of payload and 2018 F150 Limiteds that have less than 1100.

Biggest items for Tundras that add the weight are 4x4, trailer tow package, large fuel tank and sunroof.

4x4 actually has a little more payload than 4x2 because of the beefier components.

To the OP, the Tundra hasn't changed much in 12ish years. The lower payload was pretty solid back in 2007, but it is an older vehicle. Any options in the truck take away from payload. Heavier wheels, upgraded stereo, sun roof, floor mats, bigger tank, bed liner, bed rails, center console, etc. are all going to take a bite out of your payload.

Your vehicle has a maximum weight rating, and if you subtract the vehicles actual weight from that GVWR then the remainder is your payload.

There are TONS of threads about people being shocked about "low" payload. Hopefully this can clarify a fundamental marketing technique: ALL MANUFACTURERS USE THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE NUMBERS FOR ADS. The new F150 can tow 13,000+ pounds, but only in a very specific stripped down set up. Always check the door of the exact truck you are looking to buy.

 

Running over the numbers the truck is rated for risks damage, loss of control, and a heap of other potential issues. You'll see lots of idiots saying "I did this, I did that, and it was fine" but I reiterate: they are idiots. The ratings on trucks are not indications of maximum possible performance. They are maximum SAFE performance numbers. Overloaded trucks will drive and move on flat ground. Add bumps in the road and you are rapidly exceeding what your suspension can safely absorb, or handle in turns. Same goes for brakes. They aren't designed to stop more than what's on the sticker, so if you overload you are putting yourself and everyone else on the road at risk. Anyone doing this with a cavalier attitude is an idiot. Hauling over the ratings might put you in legal trouble if you are involved in an accident, too.


TLDR: Ratings are max safe numbers for the vehicle and you're a selfish idiot if you are running over them on a regular basis.

 

You are comparing a 3/4 ton to a 1/2 ton.... apples and oranges.

 

Thank you very informative. I don't plan on loading the truck much, I'm not a 'truck' person per say just want a big vehicle and want to be able to tow/move things whenever needed.

If a truck get upgraded suspension and what not, does that increse the payload? like full 2.5 shocks/coil overs what not.

 

No. You cannot increase your payload because it is based off your axles. You can affect the ride and how it feels towing or hauling, but you can't increase the payload.

Sure thing. We want everybody to be safe out there. There have been several members that have moved to larger trucks to accommodate boats and trailers that are just too much for a Tundra. Best practice is to decide what you priorities are regarding the truck and the loads it will haul, and make sure it all lines up. If you have to have a trader bigger than the Tundra can safely haul then it would be best to get a truck designed for the trailer. Doesn't mean you have to leave the forum. We have a mod who had to make that very decision.

I personally prioritize my truck, so any future purchases will have to fit within its capabilities.
