Hello everyone, I've decided to build a toolbox for my truck. I have already built a prototype to find all the measurements, and got carried away in the designs...

Now I plan on organising picking up a 6' length of tree and carving the single piece into the right shape to fit in the rails to slide to the back snugly.

My current plan is to basically gut it like a pumpkin, flatten the back, carve out the rail handles, slide it in place, lock it back with the sliding anchors and then fill it with beer.

I know very little about the proper way to use my truck bed, are there any issues preventing me from being able to do this? When I made the first prototype I did it in halves so it would be easier to do it with the rough pieces.

Any insight into the project would be greatly appreciated, I've got no training in anything here.

    Cheers.

If you plan on keeping your tools secure from theft, and rust free, why not just buy a toolbox that fits nicely in your bed?

    Welcome from NY.

Just be careful with the weight of the tree box.

    2 questions.

    1-Why?

2-Is Beer a tool that you need to use from a tree box somehow?

I just do not understand the point here and I will Mod or Build just about anything too.

    Why?
Impress the girls my age who are addicted to Instagram

I really don't have a good reason, sorry everybody.

I'm in Calgary, AB. This year we've been getting it good but I plan on water sealing everything on the box, im sure the final product will run through a through tests before I get it right. My plan right now for that is to buy something clear in a can from home Depot, and use silicone to hold the bark from weathering away.

Cool idea. I like when peep do exactly what they want cause they can. And I’m a carpenter so I can appreciate a solid chunk of tree as a toolbox. I don’t have much for tips, but I’m down to hand and watch haha. Welcome from Hinton :canada:

I think if you are really going to do this I would be careful not to make the log fit the bed sides too snugly.
The wood will likely expand and contract a little with the seasons and I would hate to see it damage your bed while expanding!

I would also think that for Beer it will be fine but tools that are metal may be inclined to rust more inside the hollow tree?

FYI I have a designed, purchased bed toolbox and there’s no such thing as non-rusty tools in mine anyway :notsure:

Same here but it will sure be worse with a tree as the toolbox.

The tree expanding is a good thing to watch out for, might skip using wood in the rail and just bolt something in as snug as possible. Probably same myself a few hours by doing it that way.

As for rusty tools, I'll work on the finishing details when I get there. Have you guys considered dehydration packs in your boxes to help? If they keep beef jerky dry they should be fine to line a tool box with a few of em

Epoxy resin used for fiberglass would work well for waterproofing the exterior
