I’m wanting to add 2 more keys and 2 more key fobs to my used 2017 Toyota Tundra Limited Crewmax. Can the keys be programmed by some type of sequence as some other vehicles can be or does it need to be taken to a locksmith? Also, can the key fobs also be programmed by myself or does a locksmith or dealership have to do it?
It’s the simple key fob with Lock, Unlock and Panic button.
    Thanks

I own a 2017 also and needed an extra key. I looked around and decided the best route was buy the key blanks (uncut) via Sparks or Cool Springs Toyota then take to local dealer and have them cut and programmed. I believe there are locksmiths that can cut and program I just didn't go that route. I paid 90.00 at a dealership to have 2 keys cut and programmed.

    Thanks
I’m gonna try a local locksmith and see how that goes first
My dealership wanted $130.00 for the key and program

I bought my 2010 CrewMax last week with only one key & fob. Today I received two blank keys and two fobs from Amazon.

I had found this sequence for programming fobs: https://www.programyourremote.com/c...ey-programming-instructions-listing-7740.aspx
and this one for (cut, but unprogrammed) keys: https://www.programautokeys.com/cla...ey-programming-instructions-listing-9327.aspx

However, I just tried the sequence for putting the vehicle into fob programming mode several times, and it won't give the lock/unlock response. I'm also curious whether this is a bunch of baloney.

i bought 2 FOB's off Amazon for 35$, and 2 keys for 15$.... local locksmith wants $75 to program each.... so it would be 150 per set.

I just had a local locksmith today cut 2 keys, program 2 keys and also program 2 key fobs and he charged me $60.00
Pretty sweet when the local dealership wanted $130.00 for 1 key

You can use TechStream to program them relatively easily. I got mine cut at home depot and then programmed them myself. You need to program the remote buttons and the chip separately.

Thanks, Joe. I didn't know about TechStream. From Toyota.com, a 2-day license runs $20, but $65 for the "Security Professional" version that requires membership in "NASTF Vehicle Security Professional Registry" ... or you can buy a CD of the software on Amazon that tells you to ignore the antivirus warnings when you install it. That sounds pretty sketchy. Is it pirated software?

Next, has anyone tried https://tomskey.com/? I just ran across their instructional video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txS86YONP3U. They will rent you an OBD device with Bluetooth connection, then you use their app on your cell phone to program keys and fobs. They hold a deposit until you return the device within 30 days. Looks like it would be about $50, return shipping label included. Shipping is currently free, too. The video was only posted in April 2020, so I assume it's a fairly new service.

They'll also sell you keys and fobs, but no problem if you've bought them elsewhere like I have. Any thoughts?

Yeah you buy it on Amazon or ebay and they will send you a license key. I used it on an old laptop that I wasn't too worried about and it worked great. I was able to turn off the seat belt alarm and some other things to, it was worth it for the keys alone though. Id go with one that has good reviews since you need to have communication with the seller to get the key

Well, I decided to go with TomsKey. After reading more about TechStream, it really sounds like those guys are running a sketchy operation. It's most likely software pirated from Toyota, and from what I can tell, the way you get the unlock code for the program is by LETTING THEM TAKE OVER REMOTE CONTROL OF YOUR COMPUTER?!? And from overseas somewhere, with all virus and malware protection disabled at that. No way in 773H. The ONLY way I'd ever let anyone unknown do that is if I were running Windows inside a virtual machine on my Macbook (search for Oracle VirtualBox if you don't know about that).

Thanks for the suggestion, but I depend on my computer too much to take that risk.

So, as much as I'd love to be able to tinker with the car's settings, for now I'll be happy just having more than one key+fob. I'll follow up to let folks know how it goes with Tom.

None of that is actually necessary if you can install the software and drivers yourself and are tech savvy. All you need is for them to send you the activation key. The reason they say you maybe need to allow remote communication is because most people do not know how to manually install drivers for the cable. I got everything running on techstream without any remote assistance.

Bought a flip key from Ebay for about $38 and had it cut and programmed (key and fob) for $60, works good.

I got techstream, did my own, had the keys cut for a few bucks locally. Pretty easy process.

That said - the locksmith who cut them had the setup to do it, and for a key and a fob programmed and parts it was shockingly inexpensive. Just didn't know they had the tech to do it. Next time will just head in there.

Followup -- the Tom's Key programmer arrived in the mail last week. Prepaid return shipping label included, 30 days to return before they start docking my deposit.

Everything went fine with the programming of both the fobs and keys. Simple process to erase existing programs and to add all my new ones back. The only hiccup was in actually programming the new keys. It would spin and spin and never complete on the first try. Finally I decided that maybe I had the other keys too close to the ignition switch, and that really seemed to help. I was programming two new keys (uncut), and they both failed on the first try, but on the second try it only took about 40 seconds.

The final step was getting the new keys cut. I had initially gone to Lowe's, and they were out of type G keys. Then I bought online, went back to Lowe's, and one of their machines was down and the other couldn't read the chip in the one key that I own. Tried Home Depot... new guy had to get experienced guy, and he said they couldn't cut keys they didn't sell. Tried Lowe's again and got a different guy who basically told me the same story I got at HD! Next went to the local old-time hardware store. I knew these guys could do it, shoulda gone there in the first place. But NO -- they wouldn't cut them, but they did refer me to a nearby locksmith shop... one that's only open M-F 10:30-5:00. So I waited through the weekend and finally got to the locksmith this week. 5 minutes and $10 poorer, I walked out with two new keys that worked perfectly in my "new" Tundra.

In summary, I'd recommend https://tomskey.com 100% if you don't want the hassle or risk of buying a programmer and the (pirated?) software. Yes, I wish I could do some of the other configuration tweaks that techstream would allow, but I'm happy with my outcome.

I purchased a key from an Amazon vendor (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NRXGJ47/) and had the key cut and programmed at a small mom'n'pop locksmith in an adjacent town. $75 for the key and fob programming, $5 to cut the key.

Took about 15 minutes. I'm not complaining about the price (dealerships in my area either refused to do this or charged $200+ for programming), but I'd like to have spent the time to do it myself via Techstream -- which I don't own.

Sure thing! So for anyone who's interested, here are the items I purchased on Amazon. These are not affiliate links; I get nothing if you buy the same.

    Fobs, 2-pack, $29.95: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KTHXO2U
    Keys, type G, 2-pack, $14.95: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KTHXKMO

Add to that $10 for cutting and $50 for Tom's Key programming, I have two whole new sets of keys and fobs for under $95. Can't complain... except when I compare to the chipless keys on my '02 Tundra! :(

PS -- Too late now, but I just found those same items on Amazon from the same seller, all packaged into one bundle for $34.95. Could have saved another $10! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N7J04FS

Those keys don't work for G stamped keys. The fob might be alright, but those keys aren't the right ones for 3rd gen trucks with G keys.

Sorry, I guess I kinda hijacked the thread and I know it's supposed to be for 3rd gen. However, I have a 2010 and the keys linked above work fine for my truck. My original key is stamped "G", though, so are you saying that not all "G" keys are the same?

I'm not sure what makes your G key different from my G key. The key listing states 2007 to 2010. The combo listing says to make sure your key does NOT have the G stamp. Even the Amazon compatibility checker says no go for 2014+. The reviews for the combo posting also have many testimonials about the keys not having transponders and not working with newer vehicles. So SOMETHING changed, I'm just not sure what.

Ah, okay. I probably didn't fully read the description for the combo listing. I can definitely confirm that the "keys-only" listing above links directly to what I bought, and it works with my 2010 with type G.

I do have to wonder when things changed, and maybe sometime mid-2010 model year. Using the Tom's Key programmer, my key type showed up under later model years, though I can't say now exactly what range. Going through the programming instructions, you can just try each type in sequence until it recognizes your keys. When I did the date range that went through 2010, it couldn't talk with my key. When I chose the next one that said "G" (maybe 2011+?), it read my existing key and programmed these new ones just fine.

So, regardless of what key you find that matches your vehicle, the Tom's Key programmer should be able to handle it.

Yet another followup... As I said, I only got one (master) key when I bought my truck recently. I bought the keys and fobs on Amazon (listed/linked above). I rented a TomsKey programmer, and all went well. We had a discussion about what keys fit what truck (above).

Then I decided that, as long as I had sunk the cost of renting the programmer, I might as well get another key or two done while I have it. SO... I ordered another pair of the same ones I had ordered before, from the same seller on Amazon and guess what -- they didn't program. This time I paid closer attention, and the little bag that each key came in had a "T 67" sticker on it. The description says, "Replaces 4D-67 Transponder Chip" but Amazon's own compatibility checker says that these keys match my truck. In the phone app that TomsKey uses to communicate with the ODB device, Type 67 does show a year range up to (?) 2015, but when I selected that version, it wouldn't connect. When I selected Type 72 / Type G, it connected. But then (no surprise) when I inserted the new keys to program them, they never completed, and the security light on the dash flashed some error code (two flashes, then one maybe?).

So, I initiated the return to Amazon and looked for only Type G keys. I found this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072N98D1L/) and decided to give it a try, even though Amazon says it's not compatible with my truck. The keys arrived today, and the bags were labeled "T G". The first one programmed just as it should. I wasn't sure how many keys this vehicle can handle, but it's apparently only 4. The last key wouldn't program, and the security light flashed a different code when I tried. I took the new one that I programmed back to the same locksmith, and (different guy this time) only got charged $3.50 to cut it, vs. the $5/each I paid for the other two.

Side note -- the TomsKey phone app shows a date range of 2011-2015 for Type G, even though my 2010 obviously also uses those chips.

It's still a mystery why those first two keys programmed. I'll just have to assume that Amazon didn't send me what I ordered, but sent me what I really wanted the first time! It does explain why some of you said that what I showed that I bought (or thought that I bought) would not work for a Type G system.

I still have one uncut, unprogrammed Type G key if anyone wants to throw me a few bucks for it. Happy to mail it right out. PM me if interested.

IMO techstream is the best way to do it and it’s pretty straight forward. Send me a PM if you need further help.

do you have a link to where you bought the key fob from?

Who also cut and programmed them for you?

Here's the Ebay link of the key, it took about a couple of weeks to receive.
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/361652068733

Lowes and Home Depot wouldn't cut the blank key (company policy). I found a local locksmith in my area that cut it for $5 and a guy on OfferUp that programmed it and the remote for $60.

If you need the info of the guy who programmed it, I can share it with you.
